Today, I’m in the studio painting papers for a mixed media collage series. I’ll be creating a cohesive stash of painted papers and mark-making that I can use when I actually start piecing together the collages.
Painting paper is my happy place, and after today, I hope it’s yours too. It's the best way to create mixed media for a collage series.

Loved the onion skin happiness in this one! So impressed with how you combine playfulness and experimentation with the analytical use of prior discoveries. Oh, and I tend to put dates on my paints and mediums, too! (It's a great way to keep track of what I use and how fast I run out of them.)

Lol!! I love your enthusiasm 😊 Also, I clicked your link to buy the exam room paper and was like, oh cool, 125 feet. That will last a while. Imagine my surprise when a box of 12 rolls showed up! 😂 Totally my fault for not reading. And I'm not even mad about it. So much paper to paint and play with!!! YAY!!! Great attitude about all the paper, Michelle - I was originally gifted with 3 rolls and thought 'how am I ever going to use this paper?' When I did the experiment from last week's video, I immediately ordered the box of 12. Like you said...Alllllllll the painted papers + enough to cover the tables for a lobster boil 😂😍🥰

Your series is going to be awesome Jackie! If you had to choose between the medical exam paper and the Toddy Coffee Filters, which would it be?

Thank you very much, Robin! Your question is a really good one but it's like picking your favorite child...ok, it's not really like that at all. If I had to pick one, it would be the medical exam paper. If you buy the one I use, you will have enough medical exam paper for the rest of your creative life, plus it's the most versatile. However, put the toddy coffee filter paper on your gift wish list and tell everyone you want it 😂 🥰

The coffee filters are actually bags. Do you use a single layer by cutting along the sides of the bag?

Hi Diana - you are 100% right, they are bags. Yes, I do cut the edges and then the bottom of the bag so that I have 2 pieces. They come in packs of 50 - but really you get 100+ sheets when you cut them up (great value). I forgot to mention that in this video, but I did talk about it in the Transparency & Translucency video. I have to remember to include that information going forward as it is an unusual surface to paint on. Thank you so much for watching and being here. 🥰

Is the medical paper the same as rice paper?

No, the medical exam paper is the actual paper that doctors use to cover the table. Depending on where you live it may be called something else like "couch hygiene paper." The paper is very strong and will go completely transparent when using the right mediums. The only rice paper that I could get to go translucent (not transparent) was very weak and fell apart easily. Hi Leah! The medical exam paper I get is from Amazon and there is a link in the description to the exact paper I buy. I'm not sure where you are in the world, but it is called different things in different countries - in the UK it's listed as "couch hygiene rolls." I hope this helps. 🥰

@PaintedPaperStudio I'm here in U.S. Thank you so much, I saw there are 2 kinds, it dawned on me after what it is-its the paper that covers the patient exam tables🤦🏼‍♀️ I also saw the head rest paper too. I can see why that would be good paper for mark making,-I could see hi flow,liquid acrylics like FW or Liquitex or watercolors. It seems like it would be lighter than deli paper or the blick tissue paper. Thank you for your reply and for this video
