In this episode of AstroPrinter I cover how to create smoother curved surfaces like cones, cylinders and spheres and do on in Tinkercad.
Normally when you make a cylinder in Tinkercad it ends up with many flat sides not a smooth curved surface, especially when you increase the size.
In this tutorial I will show you how to fix that

I just started messing around with Tinkercad and designed a simple insert for a 16 ounce Yeti can cooler so it would accept 12 ounce cans. I didn't really pay attention to how blocky the cylinder was until I printed it. What an excellent idea you presented plus once it's done as you showed it can be saved to one's own personal parts file.👍👍👍👍👍

Genius! I just printed off a big part designed in tinkercad and I couldn't believe how bad my cylinder looked. I'll definitely be doing this!

I love this! The most common solution I hear is "learn Blender", but I can only just cope with these simplified programs, never mind Blender with it's bazillion buttons and menus.

I share everyone else's comments and just wanted to say..awesome! THIS is what a 'hacker' community is really about. Using the tools we are given in much different ways then originally thought of.

ah this is nice, i always wanted to figure outu a way to add more that 64 sides to them but this works out just as well. also works with spheres also, but u have to rotate it on the x or y and z if u dont do both z an x or y it will only smooth the sphere out in one direction but it worked great. i was just trying to figure out how to make the sphere smoother so i could try to use tinkercad to make some christmas ornaments that are picture frames as well. also so i could try to make it work with lithophanes instead of just photos. thanks for sharing, really does help out alot. also ive learned if edit a item to much its best to export it an re import it so it will be alot less pixels being taken up an keeps it from getting buggy the more an more work u do on something.

question: how do you adjust the thickness of the walls of a hollow cylinder?
@PrintingNerd
@PrintingNerd Жыл бұрын
Make it a solid then make a hole through it to leave the correct amount behind. As an example, make a solid cylinder let's say 20mm make another cylinder as a hole that 16mm and align them to the center of each other. When you join them it leaves a cylinder of 2mm walls

thanks for making this video, have a question, maybe you edited some time out of your video but each time I add more sides to my cylinder it takes longer and longer for the operation to complete, longer as in minutes for the .38mm operation to group. It seemed to happen in seconds each time in your video. Is it normal for it to take several minutes when you get down to the .38mm change ? I'm on a fast computer with a fast internet connection.

Yes, it does take longer each time. This is because the complexity of the item is increasing. Tinkercad is not 100% in the cloud, your browser does some of the work which puts load on your computer and why rendering is slow as complexity increases.

@@PrintingNerd So considering when I go down to .38mm tinkercad just slows to the point of being unusable (I can't save the object (a small cylinder) as a user object at all and trying to do anything with it usually fails) would that indicate that my computer just isn't up to the task? I'm on Chrome in windows 10. running a ryzen7 cpu, vcard is a budget model since I don't game, does tinkercad rely on the cpu or the videocard for rendering?

Fine idea. But seems the size of the smoothed image is rather large. Is not possible to do much with that cylinder afterwards in Tinkercad.
