What you say is true but they take too damn long to grow. So WHY does the city care how tall a fence is in the first place?

So are the lattice panels she said to put on top of the fence allowed? If you can then why can't people build the fence that tall in the first place? Whoever made the fence "rules" are just control freaks.

Im a cancer patient. I started planting and "tending" to my flowers while in treatment, it became therapeutic for me. However, I failed to properly plan what I was planting and failed to plan for privacy. I desperately need privacy in a few spaces and now motivated to plant with some guidance from tour videos thatvare auper helpful! Thank you!

Great video! My bf planted the yews about three years ago and they are now about 12 feet and block traffic headlights that used to be very annoying. I built a fence between my house and neighbors using wood lattice instead of full fence panels. It’s pretty and I found premade wood frames to edge them with. They are now close to 20 years old and still in great shape! Neighbors laughed when I put it in and said it wouldn’t last. Guess I got the last laugh. 😊

Great ideas. I love bamboo but I knew it was very invasive so I will never plant it, except in containers. Not to be a Negative Nancy, but keep in mind what is privacy for you is also privacy for intruders. I'm a very private person so I want privacy screens everywhere, but I have to remember I don't want a bad guy jumping out at me from behind my own bushes. And the same privacy elements will conceal an intruder from the public eye as well.

I planted limelight hydrangea and in 3 years I have a hedge I can't see over and is beautiful! I also planted angel trumpet in large whiskey barrels and in one season it was 8 feet tall and just as wide. I do have to bring them into my garage and over winter but it is worth it! Not only are they beautiful but the blooms are gigantic and fill the air with a beautiful fragrance!

I agree with many of the other comments about how there’s no unnecessary chitchat to lead you into the conversation about privacy options and all that… I will however expand upon the bamboo theme, because if you get the kind of bamboo that CAN spread, it WILL SPREAD. And it can EASILY grow OVER 6 feet in any direction, including straight down, including growing underneath roadways, and come up under your house, and push up underneath your house and any other structures, destroying them completely!!!! I certainly love most plants, and I think I might even be tempted to plant some sort of miniature bamboo, but only in a container, simply because I have seen firsthand at my mothers home and property how absolutely devastating bamboo can be, and how utterly impossible it is to eradicate!!! I do love the way it looks, and I love the way it is useful, but I absolutely would never ever plant it… AND I’m now a subscriber!! !

We have a fence in between our neighbour's garden and ours, that we built ourselves. It's basically a bunch of wooden poles with a pole over top for stability. We put up large chicken wire onto the frame. The first summer it was basically completely open, but by now the grape and the wisteria have covered the entire thing. The houses here all have balconies, so you can see into people's yards all the time. Our neighbours have put up a bamboo screen on top of a wooden frame, and we're waiting for the wisteria to get big enough that we can let it grow along wires over the terrace. There was a passionfruit and clematis somewhere as well, but they didn't do well in our garden. Honestly, my approach to gardening is, if it won't do well when I neglect it, it doesn't belong in my garden. Worked well so far, I have many bushes, a geranium bed, a few trees, lots of hostas and ferns. We planted an almond tree in the middle, which needs to fill in a bit and grow a little more, but in a year or two it will block the view into our bedroom too.

I also use carpet outside and have for years. I learned I could do this from a man who owned a carpet company and had nice carpet outside. When I asked about it he said oh that's been there 30 years. Put landscape fabric under it and nothing grows through it. Take an area that has erosion and then put the carpet upside down and put seeds on the back. The seeds will grow roots through it and won't be able to be washed away.
@merk9569
@merk9569 Ай бұрын
I did that years ago. The carpet smothered out the weeds and grass underneath it. I cut holes where I wanted to plant. I found that cutting an X in the carpet also worked! Once the plant is in the ground, the pieces of carpet would close up to the plant and block out any potential weeds. I used carpet that was being discarded. It was better than cardboard because it lasted for years. The carpet backing had the advantage of being rough and holding the mulch in place. Carpet padding is good also but not as long lasting as carpet.

Jerusalem Artichoke makes a dense fast growing tall privacy screen. We are also trying to create natural looking hedgerows with combinations of flowering shrubs such as lilacs and roses, with trees, evergreens and groundcovers. Wild roses grow large and fast and provide both privacy and security. I also try to add low screening to hide unsightly objects or areas of the yard such as utility elements - for these I use hostas, daylilies, grasses and other dense growing plants, sometimes combining them to create more long term coverage. Hostas are slow to start so planting other plants with them that come up faster or are evergreen helps. One thing we learned the hard way was what NOT to hide or what not to plant for screening. A previous owner planted tall pine trees along the drive. That is a sticky mess on cars. And now they have a blight and need to be taken down. They also planted them in such a way that it left a hidden area and we have had cars pull in there and sit in the past. We now very carefully consider what views we don't want blocked along with those we do.

Thank you for a well-informed video. There are so many ideas! This year I added wooden lattice, using strong zip ties to my ugly chain link fence across the side. I had it spray painted black first. Then I painted the posts and top rail. It looks great. The cost of having it spray painted wasn't cheap, so I switched to black vinyl privacy lattice panels across the back. Although that costs more than wooden lattice, I read that it lasts longer, but now after reading one of your viewers who said hers had lasted 20 years, I'm not so sure that was necessary. Anyway, thank you so much for all the wonderful information.

I've been binging all of your videos as I've been at work today in preparation to completely redo my yard from the previous owner not taking care of it for several years and I already have a background in lawn care in landscaping, but I have learned a couple of things more specifically on proper mulch practices that I didn't quite have a handle on yet, but overall you've translated your passion for the entire process into your videos really well and it's just making me more and more excited and it's giving me more and more ideas for what I can do with my yard and my flower beds that I want to create As a side note, I was wondering if you plan on covering cross germination, what plants would be most suitable to cross germinate with something else or what would be feasible if given enough time or maybe just a simple explanation of it

Great video! This is the first of your videos that I've watched and I love your ideas! We have privacy challenges and met the challenges using different things - we used fast-growing Podocarpus bushes to cover outside equipment (our pool pump and heater, A/C unit, generator, etc.) and it made for a beautiful hedge running the length of our house. We used spoke-type fencing on the part of the pool deck that faces a waterway and planted King of Tuscany jasmine bushes to cover the retaining wall and rose bushes to provide privacy when we're in the pool that's nearby. We used curry leaf trees to provide shade and privacy near White Stopper bushes interspersed with Tea Olive bushes to put sight and sound distance from our neighbor and his loud pool pump! Everywhere we look, we feel its private and beautiful! We have a small garden of raised beds and in-ground trees that provides food for us and additional privacy - win/win!

@@lorirode-off763I live in south Florida (Fort Lauderdale area), in zone 10. It's AMAZING how many plants are now able to sustain our weather - we even have asparagus plants and yes, we eat them as fast as they grow - at least for the first few weeks of the season! So don't assume that if something hasn't been known to grow in your zone, it still is that way. Our roses are in bloom now - roses, in Florida, who'd have thought it? I guess people in the know would have!
