The biggest surprise is that you haven’t heard Angelina before. This bluesy style, coupled with her unique arrangement, is just one of the genres where Angelina will stun you with her talent. It's always fun to watch people that understand the mechanics of singing listen to Angelina. The complexity of what she is doing can be easily missed in what may seem like a 'simple' arrangement on the surface. Having followed her (more like studied her) for a years now, I know it can take me many listens to any given piece before I can start to pick out all the little twists and turns she takes in the song. When she was on NGT at 7, one of the judges said, "Angelina IS music", I would take it even further... Angelina IS art.

I will post the biography I compiled for her once I get my internet back. Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman, who has chosen to keep his life private. Angelina started singing around 18 months of age after listening to Whitney Houston on KZfaq. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was considered a prodigy as an artist and poet and married a Japanese man who passed away in 2019. Angelina speaks Norwegian, Farsi, English, Japanese and Swedish. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where she received vocal training starting around age 4. Angelina plays the piano, violin, guitar and flute and also paints. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage. Why Angelina always performs barefoot At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. Angelina at age 6 and 7 did record a few songs in a recording studio, most notably “I Who Have Nothing”, a truly remarkable performance for a 6 or 7 year old. Angelina is blessed with a deep voice with a beautiful rich tone and has always made her sound much older than her age. Many compare her voice to that of Amy Winehouse. Her voice is highly emotional which is very rare for a young girl and some people can’t accept that such a soulful voice can come from someone who has not had enough life experience. One vocal coach on KZfaq recently said, “If you have a song and want to have more emotion added to that song, have Angelina sing it.” At age 8, (please refer to replies by erik to a comment I made on JHTreacts video on 6/7/21 who provides proof Angelina had already turned 8) Angelina’s audition on NGT was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried. The next performance on NGT was her cover of Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition and was not performed in front of an audience. In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them. In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists. Angelina had become a star in her native Norway and her videos on KZfaq went viral. She gave a few concerts during the summer of 2014 while 8 years old. On June 27, 2018 Jordan performed “Fly Me to the Moon” for Quincy Jones in The O2 Arena in London. Angelina performed on America’s Got Talent The Champions which aired in January 2020. She earned the Golden Buzzer for her performance of her unique arrangement of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. She sang her cover of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in the Finals but didn’t make it into the final 5 contestants. There is much debate over how and why Angelina was eliminated. Angelina has covered more than 130 songs from 80 different artists, all of which are available on KZfaq. Angelina has always made changes to each song she covers and often her version is preferred over the original. Her 2nd single, 7th Heaven is a jazzy, upbeat, inspirational song and was also written by Angelina. Angelina’s family requested Republic Records to allow her to have as normal a childhood as possible. This is why Republic Records has not promoted her first two singles. Angelina Jordan is a humble, compassionate young lady of very few words when she is not singing. She is on videos saying she wants to sing for the entire world and also that she wants to improve the quality of life for all the children on Earth. She has helped to raise millions of dollars for children’s charities and environmental causes. Hi Chris, that was a wonderful reaction. So, a 13 -year-old stands on stage and begins a cappella of an iconic song which is arguably one of the hardest songs in the world to sing and does it in front of her hero (Simon), a full house, and millions watching on TV and is totally relaxed (or she wouldn't be able to do some of the playful voice thingys). Angelina is a true artist. One of my favorite vocalist. Raised on the great jazz female singers, she as so many colors in her voice. My favorite is her version of Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind" when she was 10 or 11. Soooo goood!

You have fallen into the vortex of Angelina Jordan who arguably brings the most confident, versatile, seemingly effortless, and fearless vocal artistry found today (whether measured across artists, genres, or decades). You may think this an exaggeration but listen to a few more of her many performances (135+ covers plus original songs - all on YT) and you will see! She has been performing at a high level all over the world since age 7/8 when she won Norway's Got Talent singing Billie Holiday, Nancy Sinatra, and Gershwin. Norwegian-born Angelina Jordan is a music prodigy she started singing at age of 1.5 years and more than that she started with Billy Holiday Jazz. I think that you need to see how amazing she was even at the age of seven (Gloomy Sunday, Bang Bang, and Summertime on Norway's Got Talent); then outdoor concert age 8 "What a Difference a Day Makes"; then her tribute to Screaming Jay Hawkins at age 9y 2m will blow your mind - be sure to watch the black & white studio version of her own arrangement of "I Put a Spell on You". Nice reaction, Chris. I see others have filled you in on a lot of Angelina information, so I'll just mention that there was some clever editing in the backstage interview at the start. It was made to look as though Angelina was pretty emotional about being on the show and about her desire to win it. There are a couple of videos of that backstage interview that show why she was emotional. It was right after she had been talking about wishing her late grandfather could be there to see her perform.

There is only one version that could possibly be counted as "better" than this one. It is also performed by Angelina. Unfortunately, there is no link to it as she performed it on her Christmas 2021 live stream. I don't have the musical knowledge to describe how much difference two years have made. 'I Put A Spell On You' at 9 years is a complete opposite of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and how she is so versatile. She also had a hand in the lyrics and arrangement of this studio version. Am subscribing. In this song Angelina resembles a mature housecat in a sunny morning kitchen. She stalks in on tiptoes, tail straight up, ignoring the old hound still sleeping on his mat by the door. Takes a detour to stay in her sunbeam rather than walk through the shadow of the island countertop, glances once at the table where a plate of bacon smells delicious but such theft is beneath her dignity and pauses at the food dishes, where she delicately collects two kibble from the dogs dish before making a graceful leap to her favorite sunny windowledge to rest and recover from the exertion of the walk.

The reason she performs barefoot is to bring awareness to her public of the children worldwide who can't afford shoes of their own. I would say exactly the opposite: her run on NGT at 7 and 8 explains (to some degree, anwyay) how she could be so good in this performance at 13. Because she was already _amazingly_ good back then. And not good in a typical "child singer on a TV talent show" way (for example, she sang not a single belted note in the entire competition), but good in the way a seasoned adult singer would be good. (In fact, come to think of it… good in the way that she herself was good in this AGT performance, 5½ years later: mature, assured, genuine.) After her audition, the first judge to speak called her "an old soul who has lived many lives". That kind of says it all. Please consider reacting to all of her NGT performances. First recordet in studio when she was 6 yo. Had to wait to she was 7 yo before she was allowed to sing at Norway got talent, won aftern turn 8 yo during the competition. When she was 9 yo she showed what potensial she had with a cover of "I Put a Spell on You" that is just to god to be done by a child from eart. Angelina is one of the very very few artist that most of the time only needs 1 take recording. She is known as the jazz princess but she is fantastic in every genre ( dont know about opera but some day she may show that she can do that to ).

Her earliest performances age 7 winning Norway Has Talent are phenomenal and today as a teenager, writing her own songs, she is still amazing. Try her more recent version of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean, done in her beloved jazz style. Every cover she has done adds her own special magic to the original. Another one she did for that show was Yellow Brick Road, by Elton John, and it is also a stunner. Incidentally she does all her own arrangements. And remember she is singing not in her original language, she speaks quite a few, and plays a few instruments too.

The "musical liberties" (soft consonants, breathy & raspy tone, intimate & soulful sound, etc.) are all hallmarks of a seriously good jazz singer. And that's something you don't see much anymore, because (a) it's hard to do, (b) it requires mastery of many different vocal techniques, and (c) it's not a very popular genre among today's "pop-music-streaming" generation. Yet here you have a 13-year-old who owned a complete jazz sound from age 6 (or earlier) -- including a beautiful vibrato and amazing vocal control.
