The hot glue is used on the outside so this is fine. ( I saw complaints in comments) I grew up in the country Kentucky. We used this type filter catching rain water in a much larger scale. Hundreds of gallons stored in tank underground. Missing gravel in this filter. All coal, sand, and gravel needs washed with boiling water till clean. Filtered rain water is same as destilled.

Very innovative, convenient and economical. How many cycles does the filter last? And if you have glued the two containers together to avoid any leakages, how do you go about changing the filter?

The number of particulates tells nothing about j\how clean water it is. The water can be deadly poisonous and crystal clear. And water can be full of particulates and still be safe to drink.

@@swapnilgurav2950 yes activated charcoal. My design is... the bottom of the top bottle has a cap glued to it. I fill the bottle with water and screw it on the glued cap. Then I flip it upside down, let it filter out, onto a larger glass bottle. If you make the filter in a 16oz. ...make it with both bottles in the same direction. ∆ ∆. ....it takes at least 4-6 hours to filter. ...The first filtration takes 6-10 hours.

It's worth noting a charcoal filter only is effective at removing organic chemicals from water, and to a slightly lesser extent than activate charcoal (But still useable). Heavy metals and non-organic materials won't be trapped as easily by the charcoal. The water should also still be boiled before drinking. Full distillation is best, with this as a starting point.
@DIYLabs
@DIYLabs 6 жыл бұрын
So would distillation right of the bat be more effective than charcoal filter--->distillation?

Lead cannot be boiled away!
@kittenclaws5775
@kittenclaws5775 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly. By distilling the water, you leave the lead behind as that doesn't evaporate - the lead remains in the evaporative chamber and the condensation chamber only has the chemicals that can be vaporized at water's boiling point - mostly. No distillation is perfect. But for heavier things like lead, single distillation is usually sufficient but multiple runs can be good in the case of significant concern.
@kittenclaws5775
@kittenclaws5775 6 жыл бұрын
The more forms of purification you use the better. Filtering means your distillation chamber won't need as much cleaning, which is not a bad thing, and may remove some non-organics that would vaporize with the water during distillation.

I think this would be okay for camping, just to get water clean for showering and washing the hair. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense to me as the bottle with the "chemicals" which have been filtered out is sitting in the clean water with holes in the bottom of the bottle. I would think the clean water should be in a separate container from the dirty filter.
