If you MUST carry out this dangerous repair, at least offset the two joins so that they are not alongside one another and cannot short across. Secondly, don't do this.

And double, triple the heatshrink tubing, and use bigger ones to cover everything instead of using cotton and tape. Filling larger heatshrink tube with hot glue can be used to help with strain relief too.

I never had any luck with off the shelf plug ends. Even when I paid $200 to get a bunch of my cords fixed. I do a similar method as this with more reinforcement than the video shows. Nothing you buy off the shelf is engineered to work flawlessly. Everything is engineered to be just good enough to sell at the price people are willing to pay. Moreover, even the plug ends they sell that do not really work, are often as expensive as getting a new cord.
@dennisgarber
@dennisgarber Ай бұрын
I use several extension cords for work each day and use about 250 feet of them on the weekends to mow my 75 feet by 400 feet deep lawn, since I have so many cords, and a corded lawn mower doesn't stall on long grass like my riding and push gas mowers, and the electric cuts the lawn shorter and the lawn looks better. My lawn grows an inch per day and I need to cut it 2 times a week with my gas mowers and once with the electric. Also, the thinker the copper wire, the more brittle and more quickly we get cord breaks. The thick wire is nearly impossible to get a good plug replacement. So slicing and soldering has been the only practical solution. It seems like a good thick cord does not take very long before needing a repair, more so than the thin. The wife and son refuse to mow rationally, from the outlet outwards, so the cord cannot get run over. I think they also purposely run over the cord with the lawn mower as an excuse not to mow, just as they use the excuse that they can't get the fas mowers started. Thus a seemingly constant cord repair is the norm.

It is an excellent video recording, but the whole point on safety is missing. If someone follows the instructions perfectly, they end up with a very dangerous setup. No, unless this is an emergency requirement, it should never be done. Buy a replacement plug that was designed to work better and last longer. If someone repairs an electrical cord in this fashion, they end up having an electrical failure and possibly a fire hazard.

Many things are wrong with this. a) Superglue is getting 100% stiff, you can't use this in a flexible environment. It will break in small pieces quickly. b) You have no pull relief. If somebody pulls strongly it will detach. This whole solution is ridiculous and takes a lot of unnecessary work. Correct solution: Just buy a detachable plug and screw it to the cable. Easy peasy.

And one more thing: a lighter is not the right tool for stripping cables. High temperatures or flames cause the copper to oxidize. Oxidized copper does not conduct electricity and leads to heating of the connection point, in rare cases even to a fire. It also prevents soldering. It is better to use a wire stripper, which doesn't cost much and can be used for decades.

Zastosowanie zapalniczki zamiast opalarki - nieodwracalne uszkodzenie własności izolacyjnych polwinitu. 3. Przewody łączone powinny być różnej długości, aby połączenia nie sąsiadowały ze sobą. 4. I actually learned more from the comments here than the video. Also, you do know that there is a tool for stripping wires, right? They're called wire strippers. You can pick them relatively inexpensively at any hardware store, and they're a lot easier and faster to use than a lighter and a box cutter. That, and what everyone here is saying about safety.

I don't think that the Health & Safety Department would be too impressed by this video. The plastic wire coverings are a specific thickness for a calculated safe use. Replacing these with ultra thin heat shrink is building in a possible shorting hazard.

1. Soldering makes the wire stiff & likely to break. 2. The wires weren't even twisted together, there needs to be strength in the join before soldering so the join cannot pull apart. 3. As others have said, the joins should be staggered. 4. I doubt the heat shrink tubing is adequate for the voltage. Who has it anyway? 5. just buy a new lead.

Agree with MacNewton. THis will work but is not safe or durable. If you had enough bare wire on both sides you could at least splice the ends together to give some strain resistance but, com'on, a replacement plug is $3.00 in USA--where we don't even use these--probably cheaper where this is the standard. Be safe, do it right!

Good job eliminating the flex strain relief on the plug, as well as the ridge to grab and pull the plug! (Probably failed because the ridge was never used, but pulling the wire broke it.) Will fail again soon. New plug costs pennies and takes a minute to install!
