FACTS

Yup, they use recycled mild steel and give it a poor or no heat treatment. Then their knives are sold to the ignorant, often at jacked up prices by unscrupulous retailers, who often claim to be the makers. If they did use better, more appropriate knife steels and do decent heat treatments, their knives would be worth buying. Otherwise their craftsmanship is going to waste.

Even with much of their existing metal, they can still create a decent edge with better heat treatment, and doing basic tests of the steels hardness before hand.

@@muhammedk470 Why go to all the trouble of making a good knife with a decent heat treatment? They crank their knife-like objects out as quickly and cheaply as possible, and rely on sales to the ignorant who buy into the myth of "the lost art of Damascus" and the steel having some magical qualities. I've actually seen guys who imports batches of these knives trying to talk customers at gun shows into buying them with the lie that they have a friend who traveled to the middle east and learned the secret, lost method to make "real damascus" steel and he makes them in is home shop. Buyer beware and be suspicious of anything coming out of Pakistan. I have a friend who's wife fell for it and bought a beautiful damascus cleaver for him as a present. He loved the think and came to me later asking if I would put a good edge on it. I did the best I could and tried not to be too harsh when told him the reality of what the cleaver was. I think he hung it in his kitchen and told his wife it was too beautiful to use.

Sounds like it wasn't forge-welded properly.

The fact that they had a weld to begin with is impressive. if they used sand, just clean common silica sand, they would have MUCH better welds, and they should also maybe give a second welding pass on their last weld

@@supertedogpriken Yes they take an edge and work well. They are very stout, 3 - 5mm thick. Honestly I bought them primarily for display as they are VERY ornate. The damascus isn't Japanese or even Chinese quality but it's decent and very affordable. Some are full tang while others are partial or rat tail. Many are offered in stainless if you want a more practical, low maintenance blade.

No flux means you simply did not see it applied to the metal. I doubt they would have ever gotten to the finished product without it.

Yes! I figured this whole "damascus" thing would have run it's course by now. Seems like they could probably aquire some old leaf springs and make some decent, basic carbon steel knives. However, I don't think there would be the same success with the head shops where they sell this junk to stoners.

One of them is that plate, plus it's a completely different way of doing things if they're planning for an hard edge, this is just for the Damascus look and not for the high carbon hard stell purpose

@@N3m3sls This isn’t true in all cases, that would technically be a San-mai or core damascus blade. One of the simplest damascus’s you can forge is 1084 and 15n20, which are both hardenable steels suitable for knifemaking.

What you’re describing is San mai, which is basically a metal taco that gets forge welded. It’s a different process from what you’re seeing here and it’s a pain in the balls to do without kerosene and a press.

I could only judge this properly if I was at the forge all day. (I've been privileged to be at SEKI for special demos and many other forges where one can see and learn what steps are indeed important and how it is conducted the right way. For sure you know this yourself. Ot was obvious that the metal looked a bit like lava for sure, no arguments there. I'll check your stuff if u have a site yes?

Right? You can tell these are the kind of blades sold at those street side markets and traveling vendors for a dime a dozen. The steel has been scorched and reheated multiple times with proper tempering and I'd wager the second you struck the spine of one of these blades to s flint, one would likely shatter like glass.

@@KC08RAS the first thing that shows poor quality is what has been mentioned, the bar of steel that was inserted likely was high carbon but stance it was inserted cold the likely hood of there being cold shuts is very high. (It’s not a practiced method among reputable bladesmiths) then twisting the bar after it was laminated kills any hope of a durable cutting edge. They also didn’t show tempering which is probably because they know there is no point. Lastly, the finish grinding kept getting way to hot judging by the amount of steam after they were pulling it out of the water. The cutting edge is thin and can reach over 450*f in 2-3 seconds on that kind of grinder.

@@KC08RAS Unfortunately, many people don’t do proper heat treatment or fail to show to viewers, in either case they are defaming real artisans. Assuming the bar he put in between for forging is high carbon steel, he must do 0. NORMALIZING 1. ANNEALING (heating and gradually letting the bar cool in furnace). 2. HARDENING (considering 1095, heat to aus temp 800 degree C) 3. QUENCHING rapidly in water/oil 4. TEMPERING (to decrease hardness to get rid of brittleness). PS: I’m from Wazirabad, the town where these guys are making knives. I have no intention to discourage them and may be I’ve wrong perceptions about them. I’m also happy to be corrected by someone experienced. :) Edit: @0:40 heard them talking about a new order for tempering, makes me think they follow HT steps, problem is no explanations from the person who’s recording or maker but I won’t blame.

@@autumn5592 Cost is a factor ,you get what you pay for I am an accomplished flint kapped so I can pretty much make an edge from nothing.I don't need a knife that cost over 100$ to whittle a stick or cut a rope that's a waste of my time because for me to make a 100$ takes my time and I'd rather spend less on a knife that I might have to sharpen a little more and have some beer money left over. Like wood turning, it's just how it is. It's craft passed throughout generations. With new tech there's cast iron but also compromise on the end product.

That's the way it's done with pattern welded steel, you can't forge the knife and edge to shape or you will not get a nice looking pattern.

@Michael I I get where you are coming from but these people don't have the same tools, PPE and values like us in the Western world. They make do with what they have, I can respect that, in fact I respect that a lot. The only thing I see in this video are people working hard to feed their families. Just like you did when you were making blades.

If you are that good, when folding it with that heat you don't need flux, the hammering with that power removes most inclusions, you're also not the real thing. You just did some basic stuff.

heat to critical temp. At its critical temp steel is no longer magnetic. Quench in peanut oil. Temper at 240 or to a straw colour . Sharpen.

@@nainitalism some kinds of steel can be heat treated, some can not, no matter what you do. Most rebar, for example, can not. It´s about the crystal structure, and depends on carbon content and alloy composition.

They can afford a machine shop full of tools, but no tables or benches to hold the machines. Those guys working on the grinding equipment with their arms and legs just draped around the machines gave me the willies. I wonder how many have had their fingers or clothes pulled into the belts or wheels?

Better to take your cash and burn it. Just like they did with the steel. Ruined it before they even welded it.

Using skill and common sense has long been the way to make things throughout civiliziation. It's only been 50 years ago that OSHA was implemented.

Yup, they have have enough derelict trucks all over the place to get some 5160 spring steel from, that's actually great steel for making choppers and the like... They don't care about that though, they want to make something cheap and easy that looks "cool" and they can sell for a better profit. The small traditional forges in places like Thailand and the Philippines are still making good knives in traditional designs that are actually used by the locals. That is where I spend my money. I would never buy a knife made in this factory, they are producing absolute garbage... :-/
