A few things -- any time you are performing grinding operations on a lathe the ways, chuck and any other precision parts should be shielded from debris, sparks etc. Cardboard is my preferred material, it doesn't catch in moving parts like cloth, it doesn't shred like paper or disintegrate from oil, coolant etc. and it can be bent into shape around the ways. The overhang on the plate being edge-faced in the chuck was excessive, it would have been better to pack it with shorter plates either side to reduce the vibration every time the tool bit hit it. Vibration is an issue with interrupted cuts generally. Using a carbide insert or even brazed carbide tooling for heavy interrupted cuts is also a bad idea. They're made from sintered particles and the edges tend to fracture under impact, dulling very quickly. Using high-speed steel (HSS) cutting bits for interrupted cuts is actually better than using TC tooling even if you do have to resharpen them more. The tool overhang from the tool holder is also excessive for interrupted cuts, resulting in more vibration affecting the finish of the cut.

I recommend wrapping lathe ways, lead screw, chuck in aluminium foil when doing heavy grinding. Hot sparks like to weld themself to metal.

Not if you sharpen the tool with right angle it's usually the same angle as a parting of tool ,DON t use TCT,

was fkinching a little bit with the plate chucked in the 3 jaw , if that came flying out it would do some serious damage was considering using a small grinder like that for a toolpostgrinder , think i will use the 4 screws holding the metal top to the plasic bottom part of the grinder as part of the mounting , was planning on getting a grinder like that with a straight neck so i can clamp that in good and use the 4 screws to prevent it from spinning the body in the clamp

Glad to see the ways are covered. Unless the chuck is junk, I'd protect it as well. Abrasive in the scroll won't do anything good for it!

Your grinding stone is in the wrong position. The center of your grinder must be aligned to the center of your work. Do the grinding on the side of your work (not on the top). In that way, you can adjust your grinder away or closer to your work to determine how much you have to remove from the stock by just simply adjusting your cross slide. In this set up you can make that round bar into square , hexagon or how many sides you want. But anyway I understand, you are just a beginner.

I don't understand why you'd rig up a dremel with a grind stone to your tool post. You've got a lathe and a milling machine and between those two machine, you can make pretty much anything voiding the need for a grinder setup 🤷🏻‍♂️ maybe I'm missing the point of this video...

How square are the edges and faces of the steel plate. It would have been more accurate and definitely far safer to use a vice (vise for US viewers) and a hand file. Please be very careful spinning large lumps of metal in a lathe.

You know nothing about lathe operations. If you are a good Machinist and you used grinding machines you could do your work accurately with a tolerance of +/- .001"
