In this video, I just walk along the shoreline in Mawlamyine, and I tell the story about what happened to my credit card. With my visa for Myanmar about to expire, my plan was to take a share taxi to the border with Thailand, cross into Thailand, and then apply for a new e-visa online. But to do that, you need a working credit card. So my plans got a bit complicated as a criminal started making fraudulent charges on my card.
Cheers,
Douglas (AKA The Cycling Canadian)

@sairoot08 I don't use any fancy settings with my GoPro. I just like things to be simple and automatic, and I like the colors that come straight out of the camera, so I don't color grade or do anything like that. But these are the settings that I currently use: 1080p 60; Linear FOV; Auto shutter; Auto white balance; Sharpness medium; GoPro Color. EV Comp -0.5 I use 1080p simply because my laptop isn't powerful enough to edit 4K video. And I use 60fps because it seems to look smoother to me than 30fps. The only special setting I use is seting the EV Comp to either -0.5 or -1.0. I find that video straight out fo the GoPro is a bit too bright most of the time. So I darken it a bit with exposure compensation. But that's about the only special thing I do.

Thanks! I think having a positive attitude is easier when you don't have any time pressure. 🙂 As I said in the video, it's annoying and frustrating to have to deal with stuff like this, but I can easily change my plans. I can go to Bangkok and get the visa there, stay in Thailand and wait for my new credit card to arrive, hop on a bus to anywhere. I'm happy pretty much anywhere I end up, so changing my plans isn't a problem. If I were on a one-week vacation from my job and I had strict plans and needed to get somewhere, I'd probably be a bit more stressed out. But as things are with flexible plans, I can afford to be positive.

Sorry for your trouble. I had the same thing happen in Spain. Found out they hacked my Starbucks loyalty card (how?) and drained its value (US$20), then used my personal info to access my debit card. When I contacted my bank, they cancelled the card and sent me a new one but it got returned because the mail carrier didn't recognize my name at the Airbnb where I was staying (even though I left a note on the mailbox explaining I was expecting a delivery). I had to call the bank again and have them send it to a local DHL office where I picked it up. Luckily, my credit cards were not hacked so I had other resources to get cash and make online payments but it sure was a time-consuming hassle!

Hey Doug.. sorry to hear of this predicament. There is a very quick solution though once you reach the border town in Thailand which is to apply for a 'prepaid VISA card' which you can get immediately. You just have to load it with some cash for example more than what you would need for your e-Visa application or other needs you may have. Try to find out more info on - SCB M Visa Prepaid Tourist Card. I believe they should have a branch nearby. On a separate note, can you share which merchant or store your card was used on?

Procrastination is a tough habit to break. And I think it has become even more difficult because there are so many tiny details associated with modern Internet life. Learning hard lessons, rule number one when traveling is have two credit cards. I live in Southeast Asia and fraud is a real problem here. To prevent stopping life when a card has been compromised (usually due to online transaction hacking) I keep two cards and check accounts routinely. Getting a new credit card can take a long time and direct payments still need to be made. I just switch direct payments to the other card.

I used to work for a bank and this type of thing happens all the time. They will end up refunding the money though. Something to think about is that if you open an ordinary account at your bank request they issue you with a debit MasterCard or debit visa card. If you need to use the debit mastercard then transfer the necessary funds into that account then use it. If the account has insufficent funds in it then a transaction will be rejected. Good emergency backup.

I think my debit card is a debit Visa card. But, to be honest, I never understood what that meant. It has Visa written on it, but I've only ever used it at ATM machines. I didn't know I could use it in another way. Does that mean I could have used my debit card to pay for the e-visa? (Apparently, I am behind-the-times with this stuff and don't know what I'm doing. 🙂)

Oh yes, debit card can be used for online payment. The problem is that all transactions need an OTP number from the bank to verify that you are the authentic user. Also the debit limit must be set, otherwise whatever balance in the bank can be used up by defaulter if your phone is stolen by the same person. The OTP number is sent to you via your mobile phone.

@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 4 жыл бұрын
It's quite possible that Booking dot com is the culprit here. I never actually charge any hotel fees to my credit card. I always pick low-budget hotels where you pay in cash when you arrive. BUT they still sometimes put a temporary amount on your card as a deposit to hold the reservation or get your credit card info for cancellation fees. And I do worry about that because who knows how secure these low budget hotels are? It's something I think about.

All the banks of my credit cards would block any transaction not used in a way matching to my daily usage unless I have notified them in advance. Otherwise I have to call the number they provided in their alert email to unlock my account.

I've long wanted to set up new accounts at better banks. The problem for me is that I can only do that when I am in Canada. I have to be there in person to do that, and I haven't been back to Canada for over a decade. And as a tourist, I've been unable to open bank accounts or get credit cards in other countries. I've gone into banks in Malaysia and Indonesia and the Philippines, etc, to try to set up local bank accounts, but I was always turned away. You can't do that as a tourist as far as I know. You have to be a resident of that country. The funny thing is that my bank does have a computer system that automatically blocks "risky" transactions. But it always identifies anything I do in Asia as risky and blocks it. So I have a lot of trouble using my own credit card. It gets blocked every time. But the criminal was making charges through Apple and iTunes in California, and the security system allowed that because it was in North America. 🙂

@@PlanetDoug 1) In the States we can apply credit card online. Once accepted the card will be mailed to your home. I guess the same in Canada. If so you can apply a card online then ask your relatives to send it to you. 2) Have you ever been in China ? In China certain banks accept application of foreigner(include tourists) for bank account if you have valid passport/visa and a local cell # (used to verify transaction via message.). Once you have a bank account, you will be given a debit card --- ideally the China UnionPay card which is accepted in 10 southeast Asia countries (including Myanmar).

That's how I feel. I guess it is good that security is in place everywhere, but it often feels like the security measures hurt ME far more than they hurt any criminal. I'm the one that always gets stopped by the security measure. In fact, my bank blocks every credit card transaction I make in Asia. Every one. And then I have to call my bank each time, go through the security measures, and then get them to lift the block. Yet, this criminal managed to make all these charges on my card. And those charges weren't blocked. A bit ironic. 🙂 I've thought about a VPN. I know about them, but I've just never gone so far as to set one up (and pay for it). It's starting to feel like it might be a good idea.

Citibank in Bangkok will give you a credit card. You also can have your bank send a new credit card to the Embassy, of course I'm talking from an American perspective not Canadian. You should also have a debit card that would probably be accepted like a credit card. I learned my lesson the first time I travelled to Thailand and left my debit card in an ATM and had to get advances on my credit card. I always have multiple plastic on hand for backup. Come to think about it, I sheldom use my credit cards abroad because most places want to tack on a credit card fee. Using magicjack hooked up with a local sim card on cellular data I always could call anyone in US and they think I'm calling from the US. The experience you had with your bank was outrageous. I look for cards that are advertised as travel cards or international cards. The amount of money involved shouldn't have caused all the grief. And yes, if your credit card is compromised any bank will cancel it to avoid future fraud on the same card. Your video would be so amusing if it weren't true. Good instruction for travellers.

That's a bummer, Dough, that your CC was fraudulently charged and ran into all kinds of drama. I suspect that airlines or travel agencies or whatever business entities you used once or more to book/travel with CC, could've got their data stolen. You have no idea how right you are about the laptop. Two new problems have appeared in recent days. 😀 The lid hinge broke in such a way that now when I open the lid, the body of my laptop splits open. I guess it puts too much pressure on the laptop body, and it stripped the screws. So I have to hold the computer closed when I adjust the lid angle. If I don't, the laptop case opens up and this somehow disconnects the power and it shuts down. And the keyboard is breaking down. The spacebar and the letters P and L barely work anymore. I haven't been doing much typing lately partially because of that. Typing is so slow because I have to go back and insert all the missing letters and spaces afterwards. Definitely need to replace it.

So sorry to hear about your credit card being compromised Doug, the timing of losing a working credit card in the middle of a trip really made this worse than it really is. The call center guy putting blame on you wasn't very professional. There is the card owner, many of the merchants accepting the card transaction, credit card issuing bank, credit monitoring companies and so on, the card could have been compromised by any of these entities at any time in this age of digital payment processing. All the call center needed to do was when someone reporting their card as compromised, they simply shutdown the compromised card number immediately and issue a replacement card right away without putting the blame on the card owner.. Him blaming you for the card compromise is completely unnecessary and adding insult to the injury, I only wish his bank will train him better for his sake. Always good to travel with a backup credit card or a prepaid visa debit card would be something you should do in the future. I hope you get this all sorted out soon so you can enjoy your travels again. BTW, I would always prefer to use a credit card instead of a debit card during my travels or anywhere else if I had a choice. With a credit card you can always dispute the charges on your card when card is compromised or when you had problems with merchant you are doing business with and you are more or less protected and you will not have to worry about money losses. With a debit card, once your card is compromised your entire bank account could be cleaned out and it is very difficult to recover this loss. Just so that you are aware. Prepaid throw-away debit card with limited fund could be useful for travels though.

I definitely need to do something to improve my banking, credit card, debit card life. I heard about the prepaid debit cards a while back, and it sounds like they would be very useful. Unfortunately, I can't set them up from here. I'd have to physically be in Canada to get one. In fact, everything would have to be done back in Canada - such as new bank accounts and new credit cards etc. That's one of the negative aspects of being away from your home country for a long time. Or maybe Canada is behind the times in this way. People from Europe that I meet, for example, don't seem to have the same issues that I run into. 🙂

@@PlanetDoug I wonder if it would be worth your efforts to setup an anchor point somewhere in Asia? For example, Thailand would issue you a permanent residency if over 50 years old as retired person if you establish certain amount of bank deposit for a fixed period and few other requirements such as health insurance. I am sure there are many other Asian countries offering permanent residency so if you are spending long periods (10-15 years) away from home(Canada) it may be more convenient for just such emergencies? Then you can setup banking, health care related items in this home away from home since you have permanent residency?

Looking back, I should have done something like that. Is that the Aurora? Every time I walked along the Strand, I looked to my left and saw a place quite high up that looked like it had a great view of the river. I kept thinking that I should check it out, but I never did go inside. And if I remember right, there was a kind of gravel/dirt parking lot below it, and there was always something interesting going on there. My bank in Canada is definitely poor when it comes to services like that. I'd love it if there were even simple services like just sending me a notification every time a charge is made to my card. But they can't even do that. I have to constantly log in my to online account to check that more fraud charges aren't occurring. Having multiple bank accounts with debit cards and credit cards from separate banks would be a very good idea. I want to set that up, but I'd have to go to Canada to do it. Being away for so long has meant that official stuff like bank accounts is hard to manage and keep up to date. Most of that stuff seems to require your physical presence in Canada. It's hard to do long distance - usually impossible. 🙂

I don't actually do stuff like that because I don't stay in fancy hotels usually. But for any online app like Agoda or Airbnb, you have to have a valid credit card registered with them in your name. Still a hefty amount that can be used for other things. But this requires that you register a single number that needs to be active regardless in any country via cellular roaming.
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 4 жыл бұрын
I wish I could do that. But as far as I can tell, there is no way to set that up. I can't even get my bank to just send me a simple alert (email or SMS) when a charge is made to my card. And you've touched on another issue - the inability to have a stable phone number that doesn't change. For example, I've tried to set up 2-Factor Authentication on all my online accounts, but some of them only work by sending the code by SMS to your phone. And I can't do that because I get a new phone number in every country when I get a new SIM. My phone number changes constantly. I think both eBay and Paypal. They don't use an authenticator app. It only works through phone numbers, so if you don't have a constant phone number, you can't activate 2fa for any of them. This really bugs me, but I've never come up with a solution. I've often wondered how other people that spend a lot of time overseas deal with these things. I never hear people talking about these problems. But I run into these blockades all the time. If you aren't physically at your home address with your home phone number in your country of residence, there are tons of things you simply can't do. 🙂

why do you need to go to thailand for the e-visa ? why can't you just do it from there ? apart from the credit card situation ? and if you could go to the mynmar embassy in bangkok and apply it with cash, isn't there anywhere in myanmar you can do the same ? i'm clueless about travelling...
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 4 жыл бұрын
You're right. Technically, I don't have to go to Thailand to apply for the E-visa. Since it is an online transaction, you can do that from anywhere - from any country. So I could have applied for it earlier while I was still in Myanmar. I didn't do that partially because I wasn't sure if they would approve a new Myanmar tourist visa while my old tourist visa was still active. I think it would be okay, but I worried that immigration would check their records and see that I was still in Myanmar on a valid tourist visa. So why give me a new tourist visa for their country while I was still in the country on my old visa? It seemed safer to exit Myanmar, have my computer record say that my old tourist visa had expired, and then I could apply for a new one. The online system for the Myanmar tourist visa is very professional and organized, but the one thing they make very clear is that they can deny your visa application for any reason. And they don't have to tell you the reason, and you don't get your $50 fee back. No refunds. So I didn't want to apply for the new visa, have my application rejected and then lose the $50. Just thought it made more sense to physically exit the country and THEN apply for a new visa to go back in. Less chance of my application being rejected. Unfortunately, there is no way to extend your tourist visa or get a new tourist visa while you are in Myanmar. In most countries, you can go to a local immigration office and apply to have your tourist visa extended for an additional 30 days or 60 days. But that isn't possible in Myanmar. They issue 28-day visas with no possibility of an extension. You have to leave the country when it expires and apply for a new visa outside the country.

Even when a phone line is clear, I have trouble understanding people on cell phones. And I accidentally push buttons on the phone while I'm adjusting it and trying to dig out papers and cards that the bank asks for. And then there is a delay, and we end up talking over each other. Or you end up waiting for 30 minutes for the next available person, and your phone battery dies or you run out of phone credit. Or you have to key in a number, and you don't know how to call up the dialing pad on your phone. 🙂 I find it so stressful.

Can American passport holder renew their visa while in Myanmar if they wanna stay more then a month?
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 4 жыл бұрын
No, I don't think so. As far as I know, Americans can get a 28-day tourist visa, and that's it. It's impossible to extend it while you are in Myanmar. They seem to be fairly relaxed when it comes to overstaying that visa - at least within limits. So if you overstay by a few days, you just pay a "fine" of $3 per day at the airport when you leave. So it is kind of like an unofficial visa extension. But I wouldn't recommend it, since technically you are still breaking immigration law and paying a fine. Plus, hotels can be quite picky about your visa, and if they see that your visa has expired, they might not allow you to stay there. So, realistically, 28 days is the maximum. And then you have to leave the country.

I don't have a credit card but I do have a debit card. Everytime I make purchases through my card the bank will alert me via sms. Good thing you have some cash on you to get by while you wait for your new card to arrive.

I've been puzzled by this, too. My bank has a system where I get an alert every time my debit card is used. I like that. But there is no such system for my credit card. I don't know why that is. It would have been very useful if I got an email or message when there is a charge on my credit card. Then I can tell right away if something is wrong. But the way it works, I get no alerts at all. So unless I go online every day and check my online account, I have no idea if something is wrong. In this case, I didn't realize there was a problem until I went to pay my bill at the end of the month. By then, the scammer had had access to my card for weeks. So, it was too late to stop it.

I would guess that you had an actual burglar in your room. Scary, right?

My sense is that that didn't happen. The fraud looks to be just an online thing. Somehow, some computer scammer hacked into something and got my credit card info. All the charges were online to Apple and iTunes, which indicates this was just a long-distance crime with someone sitting at their computer in some random country around the world. Of course, I really don't know what happened. It's a total mystery. I'm just hoping that it was a one-time problem and it won't happen again anytime soon. 🙂
