While cruising through the Rocky Mountains, I stumbled on this group of mysterious abandoned houses that looked to date from the 1960s or '70s....one of which was full of the CREEPIEST rusty old abandoned medical furniture and equipment!! This was in an area of major mining activity in the 1800s, which was reclaimed/cleaned up sometime in the last 50 years...so maybe these buildings had something to do with mine cleanup, and the medical stuff was part of some old abandoned mining hospital. Who knows?! All I can say for sure is, it was CREEPY AS ALL GET-OUT! Of course near the end, I conjecture as to what exactly happened here....stay tuned til the end for the sad, sad tale of Little Jimmy Dickens, the mulleted, mustachioed Cadillac-driving loser who crashed his Brougham one snowy night coming over the pass from Durango!

In 1966 dad and I questioned the mine Watchman who lived in the house next to the 'hospital'. We were getting info on a mine belonging to a friend of dad's who mined near there in the 1930's, which we found! It's mind boggling how many times we have crossed paths Sarah, and how similar our interests are.

That rack with the narrow slots (behind the hospital bed, in the first building you went in) is for charging the Batteries on Miners Cap Lamps. The Battery goes in the slot & the Cap Lamp clips onto the little bracket below the slots and makes the electrical contact with the charger. - < Doc, Retired. Miner for nearly 50 years. > .

@@stonedsavage7814 -- YES , I've used a few . The last one that I had , I purchased myself , it was one of the newer models that had the three different sized & shaped reflectors , depending on whether you wanted a Flood , Combination , or Spot Beam . I'd only had it for about 6 months when somebody decided they needed it worse than me , and stole it out of my locker at work (yeh , they broke the lock) .

Go over Black Bear Pass! It is beautiful! I used to take my '84 4-Runner over it all the time when I lived there 20 some years ago. The lack off trees doesn't always mean harm to the environment due to mining. The area you pointed that you thought was damaged by mining is just treeless due to low soil, steep angles ,and you are getting close to tree line (altitude where trees just don't grow). Mining damage, which is rampant up there, is usually in lower areas where gold would collect, very rocky, zero soil, and zero plant life. Thanks so much for a blast to my past!

The area where the trees stop is called the "timberline" and its because of the altitude
@miscbs
@miscbs 3 жыл бұрын
@@terriec808 From wikipedia "The tree line is the edge of the habitat at which trees are capable of growing. It is found at high elevations and high latitudes. Beyond the tree line, trees cannot tolerate the environmental conditions (usually cold temperatures, extreme snowpack, or associated lack of available moisture). The tree line is sometimes distinguished from a lower timberline or forest line, which is the line below which trees form a forest with a closed canopy."

Think about it. They most likely were doing something back in the 70s according to the records. These buildings were most likely used to support the people doing the reclamation work. Lockers, time cards, first aid station, kitchens and housing. It took quite a crew to clean up these mountains. And it probably went on for ten years or so. From the looks of the construction, windows and doors, I believe they were constructed in the 40s or 50s. The toilet dates are on the lids underneath. Sometimes stamped, sometimes molded.
