I may use this for my phantom of the opera bedroom (to make some catacombs) edit also if you want to make it older use yellowish bricks instead of red , since red bricks were more expensive to make so yellow bricks were used in places where bricks wouldn't be visible or lower class buildings

So this is very close to what I'm looking for tutorial wise. I just returned from Disney World in Orlando. The facade on the Tower of Terror uses a similar effect where it looks like the exterior concrete siding has worn off in random spots, exposing brick underneath as if it once was its original facade. I love this look and wanted to ask you how to achieve this look. What's the easiest way to go about this? Should I use the method in this video, or perhaps a combination of this method with the drywall compound method in your other faux brick video? Lastly, and non related, the Harry Potter castle at Universal Studios has an amazing faux, weatherproof moss effect (which looks like concrete). How do they do this, or how can one recreate this effect? I must know Obi-Wan...lol. As as always, thanks for all your amazing videos that help make me a better prop maker! I'd be lost without ya.🤘💀

For a theme park, they're going much more industrial with their materials so that they withstand regular wear and tear. If it's for a display where people won't be knocking into it for day on end, you can just follow the method in the video. If space is an issue, then I'd go with the joint compound approach, since it's less dimensional. As for the faux moss, I'd need to see it to weigh in on how it was achieved.
@603VIL

@@VanOaksProps just seeing this now. So apologies for recommending the tutorial on your request post. The moss appears to be somewhat of a corse concrete mixture that is then painted to complete the look. I believe it is more corse to provide contrast between the concrete used for the facade and the moss effect. It looks amazing. It's painted perfectly to have different hues and tones like real moss would. I would love to figure out a way to make the same thing for haunt applications.

Is it possible to do the water and torch after the foam board is painted? My block wall looks to generic. Thanks
@VanOaksProps
@VanOaksProps 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately no. There’s something about the outer coating of the foam that makes it burn that way. Once it’s coated it’s very unpredictable. Same can be said for any cut edges.
@TheLordUrban
@TheLordUrban 2 жыл бұрын
I notice you don’t use hot foam cutters. Any reason why?
@VanOaksProps
@VanOaksProps 2 жыл бұрын
I do. Sometimes it’s just faster not to. Also, depending on the use, sometimes it’s not the right tool because of how it hardens the foam during the cutting process.

Making a mausoleum for the haunt I was hired for. The own met bought miles of foam but it’s the polyisocyanurate foam. I’ve read it’s harder to work with and concerning it soaks up water since this is an outdoor build. It’s softer too. Have experience with this foam? Anything I should know working with it? I’m hoping the water and torch effect still works and this if monster mud and drylok it well it should be ok.

I use EPS foam for everything because it’s more dense than the white beaded foam. More EPS foam is the same, so there’s not a particular brand.

I'm learning that the #1 Most Important Tool for Haunters is a spray bottle of water, LOL! Is there an alternative to using a torch (say, a heat gun) in the aging process?
@VanOaksProps
@VanOaksProps 2 жыл бұрын
Not really. Heat guns work differently and the outcome is really unpredictable. So while you could use one, you won’t get the same, repeatable result
