In this episode we delve into the fascinating world of Cretan goddesses, focusing on Diktynna, Britomartis, and Artemis. These deities offer a rich tapestry of mythology and history that spans from the ancient Minoan civilization to classical Greek times. Diktynna, often associated with Britomartis, was a revered goddess of mountains and hunting in Crete, worshipped since the Minoan era (circa 2000-1450 BCE). Known for her escape from King Minos by leaping into the sea, Britomartis was transformed into a goddess by Artemis, symbolizing freedom and protection.
As we explore the connections between these goddesses, we see how Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt, absorbed many attributes of her Cretan counterparts. The Temple of Aphaia on Aegina, dating back to the 5th century BCE, stands as a significant archaeological site that highlights these links. This temple showcases the syncretism between local deities and the Olympian pantheon, with Aphaia embodying aspects of both Artemis and Britomartis/Diktynna. Join us as we uncover the fluid and intertwined identities of these powerful goddesses and their enduring legacy in ancient Greek religion. #CretanGoddesses #Mythology #AncientHistory #Archaeology #MinoanCivilization #GreekMythology #Diktynna #Britomartis #Artemis #TempleOfAphaia

▶️ABOUT THE BOOK: She Who Hunts by Dr. Carla Ionescu
SHE WHO HUNTS explores the ancient Greek Goddess Artemis through myths, history, legends, and folklore, with vivid and detailed archeological and historical evidence showing that rather than just a simple "maiden" Goddess or "virgin in the woods", ARTEMIS was one of the most prevalent and influential goddesses of the Mediterranean, playing a fundamental role in the communal, political and ritual development of the Greco-Roman world.
HER worship can be traced to a time before the Minoans, and her rituals include all facets of the human experience, from birth rituals to rites of passage, to death and beyond. Her protection for those who honour her is all encompassing, her vengeance for those who cross her is swift and fatal.
Dr. Ionescu’s work is a labour of love and research, born out of her long-standing certainty that Artemis was the most prevalent and influential goddess of the Mediterranean.

The relatively contemporary St. Nektarios of Aegina wrote and sang one of the most beautiful hymns to the Mother of God (Agni Parthene). It has become what one might say a greek orthodox platinum hit that rivals more ancient hymns. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n5Njm5yFtpmVYpc.htmlsi=HFEv3Lv0Pyvi188- I find such synchronicities poignant.

So do you agree that Minos (if he existed) was during the PaleoPalitial period of 1380-1100 BCE. But you say he was not real... would you do a show on this and the use of misogynistic rapes of Europa and her granddaughter by bulls or as part of a religious ceremony involving sex with bulls. Do you think this may have been part of an attempt to wipe the memory of the Cretan civilization through debasement? Possibly by the Mycenaeans or another culture wanting to supplant their influence particularly with a masculine religion?

@@avrevs I do agree with the dating of Minos (if he existed) and I am very keen to do an episode on the colonization of Crete by the Minoans, I am just slowly collecting the research. There are also a few scholars (non-academics) that have studied this for years that I’m thinking of inviting on the podcast to also speak about this. Maybe I’ll start with that and then do an episode with my own research :)
