The largest Greek island awaits the tourists with a various landscape: over 2500 meters high mountains, beautiful bays and enchanting cities. There are white-walled houses, taverns and silent monasteries hiding among the olive trees and orange orchards. Thos, who love history, can take a good look at the palace of Knossos near the capital. Matala is famous of its caves, the breathtaking Samaria gorge is one of Europe’s wildest places, while the beaches of Preveli and Vai await the lovers of the sea. The cities, like Agios Nikolaos, Rethimno and Hania are beautiful even for the Greek standards.

I love Crete, it has been my good fortune to visit there several times, being only a 4 hour flight from Birmingham Airport [BHX]. My favourite place to stay is Gouves, the Astir Beach Hotel, only a 20 minute cab ride from the airport. The best time to go to Crete is the beginning of April, it is not too hot,. Don't hire a car from any of the agents in Irakleio, [Herakleon] they will just rip you off. Right next door to the Astir Beach Hotel is a small car hire that will give you a much better deal. Gouves is also a brilliant place to eat, lots of tavernas along the sea front. The main route across Crete runs very close to Gouves and you can drive from one end of the island, to the other with ease. If you go there, please try the green olives and the local oranges.

Hi Fred! Thank you for pointing out that about the beginning of April. We were considering Amalfi Coast south of Naples but I'd prefer warmer weather and I believe we might hopefully encounter fewer crowds then Amalfi, which simply looked like a crowded mess with their tiny roads. Have you been to Crete a lot? If so I'm going to follow up on your info. Thanks a bunch my friend!

hi John, if you go beginning of the reason, you get far better deals too. There are areas that are very commercialised , but as I stated Gouves offers just about everything you could ask for, including only about 20 minutes in the taxi from Heraklion airport.

"Venetian" "Byzantine" "Herakles" these are probably all words she's not heard pronounced before (reading a dialogue that obviously been written by someone else)
