Cruise news today: The port of Seattle has put cruise ships on notice that they must have shore power by 2027 or they can't dock there. A crew member jumped off the MSC Musica on Monday and still has not been found. Juneau pushes back to ban even more cruise ship but fell short on the ballot. Cruise line stocks for CCL, RCL, NCLH, and VIK.

Thanks for the B-roll footage of the massive power plugs for connecting to shore power. I have been wondering just how large the plug has to be. . .

Do freighters and tankers also have to plug into shore power?
@CAVU123
@CAVU123 20 күн бұрын
Not at this time; cruise ships were prioritized because they dock along the downtown waterfront and spend an average of 10 hours offloading/loading passengers and supplies, all while their diesel engines are on and churning out air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Also more and more cruise ships are equipped to use shore power; 100% of HAL and Princess ships that dock at Pier 91 are shore-power capable; I think the other cruise lines that call at Seattle are at about 50-55%, last I checked. Port of Seattle is expanding electrical shore power to its regional cargo facilities at Terminal 5, and the Port of Tacoma (just south of Seattle) is also expanding shore power for container/cargo/tanker vessels, with a goal to install shore power at all container berths by 2030. Now they just need to get all the ships equipped to be shore power capable.
@TripReviews
@TripReviews 20 күн бұрын
@@CAVU123 would they not have their engines also running? Freighters don’t just unload in a matter of minutes but do stay tied up for multiple hours. I don’t understand how there is much difference if this is so. It sounds like a bunch of brainwashed environmentalists found a target to put their finger on. The cruise ships also have scrubbers on the exhaust to clean the output and burn a cleaner fuel rather than bunker c while in port. I imagine this rule also applies to freighters and such. I can’t say this as gospel, I’m curious.

@@TripReviews Cruise ships using shore power use cleaner, landside electricity, and turn off their diesel engines while berthed. Also open-loop scrubbers dissolve chemicals from ships exhaust but then discharge them into the water, which basically turns air pollution into water pollution; if you ever see black oily discharges off the side or back of a ship, that’s scrubber discharge. I’m not “brainwashed”, but I live here, and I’d like to keep it clean.
@TripReviews
@TripReviews 20 күн бұрын
@@CAVU123 but no one has talked about what the freighters do. Are they all hooked up to shore power while at pier side? Or are they running off of diesel? That is also my question. Kind of curious if environmentalists are after them too. So since freighters are not tied up close to downtown it doesn’t matter what they do, that’s the way it was expressed.

What is going on with people jumping off the ship, it use to be passengers jumping off now it’s the crew jumping. Maybe they should start doing psychological testing on the crew. I understand why some of the passengers are jumping because they are drunk or just nuts, I don’t think the crew is drunk so maybe they should check for the other?

Morning Doug, It’s great that Seattle wants to enforce this. Ships can pull out and leave out of Vancouver, which to me was a lot more fun than Seattle. Overall, I agree with ports doing this. It’s sad when person overboard, regardless of reason. Glad MSC gives minimal details. Thanks Doug.

As someone who worked on cruise lines crew threatening to jump overboard is kinda common, cruise companies treated their crew like shit. And the restaurant/hospitality crew have it the worst. Expecially the bar tenders working 20+ hrs a day ever other day , and buffet workers having to work 13-16hr days 6months straight not a single day off. And crew aren't even allowed in guest areas anymore on different companies ships.
@kathleenswarm8564
@kathleenswarm8564 20 күн бұрын
If that is indeed true that is inhuman. Cruise lines need to explain those practices if true. I don't think any other industry would get away with such practices.
@urbanexmike
@urbanexmike 20 күн бұрын
@@kathleenswarm8564 it's true, the crew works boat loads of hours because of the laws in which the ships are registered in, some foreign ships are nightmares because they can work people 170+ every two weeks for low pay if it's restaurant service which is what I was in but on an American liner but got paid pretty damn good, others don't have it that easy, and it all depends on mindset too some people are just built for it like myself. Also to add if you don't meet expectations you could be fired quickly and left stranded at the next port so saving is extremely important for crew Because if they get fired and stranded with no money most of the time they become homeless in a foreign country
