An outstanding video of incredible finds by fine gentlemen. This Nor Cali Gal very much enjoyed my time with you. A gracious share by David. It was a lesson of times gone by. Bottle digging is such a wholesome hobby with surprises at every turn of the shovel. I came from a line of adventurers with a nose for gold, silver and gem mining, as well as digging the land for bottles and relics, so I understand your enthusiasm. Thank you, Travis/Crick Diggers Inc. Special Thanks to David Anderson.

. . . I’ll have to figure out a time to carve out over 2 hours to watch you guys dig in old privy holes to dig for bottles. Too bad you can’t find some good places to find some really worthwhile glass insulators. Of course, I mean the above in jest. My “old” friend (and I mean really old) David have been sparing on that subject for years. That said, too bad David doesn’t know his military aircraft better. At beginning of video, he uses his authoritative voice to clearly state that the aircraft flying over were A-7 Warthogs. They were A-10 Warthogs. The A-7 Corsair II was retired in 1993 by ANG (1991 by USN and USAF). I’m retired USAF. We have an A-7 Corsair II at the Valiant Air Command in Titusville, FL. I’d love to come up and join at a dig sometime.

In 1868, Eli Waite Hoyt created Hoyt's Cologne, which he sold out of his Lowell, Massachusetts apothecary shop. After its rebranding in the early 1870s as “Hoyt's German Cologne," this men's toiletry gained great popularity. Its light and fresh fragrance was a mix of roses, violets, cloves and citrus. Hoyt's NICKEL cologne (remove the German in the embossing in WW I !!!) this bottle would have been (1917-1930s-ish).

@@CrickDiggersInc So its 1905ish and earlier, ... ??? and Hoyt's was running 2 lines of bottles ??? Hoyt's Nickel Cologne and Hoyt's German Cologne. Or it demands that Hoyt's Nickel Cologne would be pre-1870s ... before "German" cologne - which ~doesn't necessarily~ fall within this 1890s-1930s dump site. Logic would then have to say he was running 2 bottle embossings at the same time - which seems redundant (and costly production). Some historical portions of info are lacking - but the bot is the bot and its production - and the dump site date range demands strict parameters. Soooo, Nickel cologne was Hoyt's original cologne bottle that continued to be made - and he ran another line of "German" cologne. And that might be the solution. Everybody conflated his cologne as (only) 1 product. It is very possible that he was running 2 products - thus 2 bottles and (now) this makes absolute valid sense. So any 1880s-1905ih Nickel cologne would be the original perfume formula - and the German perfume came shortly after that. 2 perfumes - 2 bottles - solution.

Heinz ketchup 8-sided (post-1929-) Depends on the actual Owens-Illinois (diamond O I) plant and year, post-1929. Looks like many in the 1910s,1920s, earliest of 1930s with the same cork ring and glass stopper variety (like worcester sauce bots) vs a straight cork or screw thread metal cap. As no mention of the H J Heinz Co Pittsburgh embossing, or the bottle number this would be post-1920s when Heinz contracted out all their bots, and the Heinz embossing was removed, but the bottle number and maker's mark were retained.

Our Home Liniment Harrisburg PA (1890s - 1930s-ish) Others are found between Harrisburg and Gettysburg, some in dated 1930s dump sites. Others mention they go back to 1890s. No other entries found, no newspaper adverts. Strongly suggested - precursor liniment - but unknown and unproven link with - Gottschall's Liniment of Harrisburg, PA (1860s ? - 1880s - 1890s - ?), buyout recipe from Gottschall ? There might be other liniment origins as well - The Sloan family emigrated from Ireland in the early nineteenth century following the American Revolution; Earl's father settled in Venango County, Pennsylvania (north of Pittsburgh) - 177 miles NW of Harrisburg PA. Later, the family moves to a small log house on Sandusky Street in Zanesfield Ohio. Earl's father was a horse harness maker, who served as a pioneer veterinary surgeon for central Ohio, and he bought and sold horses for the US Army during the Civil War. He had a certain ability with horses and spent as much time caring for animals as he did in mending saddles. From a formula reportedly given to him by the Indians (though this is uncertain), Andrew made a strong-smelling brown concoction that was applied to horses' shoulders when they stiffened from the spring ploughing. The formula grew to be in great demand in the area. Some say the main ingredient of the liniment was opium - and such horse liniment then human liniment carried over the opium rub for pain relief (you betcha !). "In 1871," (far away from Harrisburg PA liniment producers and Zanesville OH ...) a 23-year-old Earl Sloan joined with his brother FOreman in st. Louis, MO, armed with several bottles of his father's horse liniment, where Foreman was engaged in the buying and shipping of horses. This time period immediately following the Civil War marked the heyday of the horse in American life. Consequently, the Sloan liniment formula was in great demand. For about twenty-five years (1870s-1890s), Earl and his brother peddled their remedy from farm to farm, and also worked the horse fairs and carnivals. At some point in the brothers' venture, someone applied the liniment to his back, discovering that it relieved his own discomfort, as well. Thereafter, the Sloan brothers began selling even more of the liniment advertising it as "good for man and beast." Earl risked the money necessary for advertisements in Chicago's streetcars, and in time, the orders for the liniment multiplied. Everybody in this time period were making their own human liniment potions in the 1880s-1900s - S. B. Kitchell's Liniment, Coldwater, Michigan, started in 1880, and by 1899 was selling in the US, Canada, and Europe. All of these liniments appear coming out from the Civil War and horse cavalry medicines - so any number of people after the War, could come back home with the concoction and claim it as their own - and then introduce it into the human liniment market.

"9"-sided ketchup bottle late 1890s patent design Lutz & Schramm Food Co, Pittsburgh PA Post-1880s Heinz patent design 8-sided ketchup. L & S or L & S Co maker's mark ... Lutz & Schramm Co. (late 1890s? - ~1908 -1940s) A clear ketchup bottle that followed along with Curtice Brothers of Rochester NY (1870s) patent design with fluted (vertical ribs) and the Heinz Pittsburgh PA (1880s) legendary 8-sided ketchup and food bottles. Both Curtice, then Heinz, were the first clear glass food bottles across the entire glass industry. The Lutz & Schramm food company of Pittsburgh is separate from the Alexander L Schramm of Canada with his multiple Schramm succession of Schramm glass plants making Schramm and Drey (Economy) wide mouth jars from Hillsboro, Illinois that would eventually be bought by Ball and continued competition against the SanFrancisco Kerr Wide Mouth jars. Schramm, Drey, and Square Mason jars (invented by Schramm, passed over to Ball Square Masons) would be in this (1904-1925) and Ball (1925-) period. Lutz & Schramm have noted tin cans of sour pickles, ketchup, apple butter, (diamond icon) relish, "L&S Tomato Catsup," ... (1943) Lutz & Schramm Co has been engaged in the manufacture of pickles and preserves at 1412 River Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There were other 19th-century businesses on that long, narrow strip between the railroad tracks and the Allegheny river. Between 1862 and 1872, the Keystone Planing Mill was built on the site where the Groetzinger tannery would rise in about 1882. When it folded in the late 1890s, the building was acquired by the Lutz & Schramm Co., which made pickles, sauces, preserves, fruit butters, baked beans and catsup -- just like its competitor (H J Heinz) down the road. Because of these dates and the earliest of Pittsburgh glass plants (W T & A Hamilton, Cunningham Glass Family, ...) this crudely catsup bottle is in that earliest of late-1890s, not even up to 1905 machine made time. As W T & A Hamilton are known for eventually making a Heinz ketchup bottle with its 8-sided shape, there should be no problem in believing that this ketchup bottle was made by W T & A Hamilton of Pittburgh. A highly collectible bottle for historical backstory, design shape, crudeness, ... and possibly being the step up for Hamilton food bottle and jar business, eventually gaining the Heinz contract business for making their ketchup and other entire food category bottles in late 1900s - and sample ketchup production ketchups (G Lassy collection) in the local Pittsburgh area.

@@CrickDiggersInc that is where I remembered doing that research in years ago vids. Just didn't connect all the dots of Lutz & Schramm having such a close connection with Hamilton and Heinz competitor. The more bots you-all keep pulling out - the more the cracks get filled in with networked information.
@johnlord8337
@johnlord8337 Жыл бұрын
If this Lutz & Schramm 9-sided bottle is late-1890s - with the central "30" imitating the Heinz bottle number embossing - then what could it imply - The Heinz 30 - (Sharpsburg handblown)(1880-1898) “English style” (what does that mean ?) bottle was used as a multi-food category bottle holding (1) celery sauce, (2) regular or pickled pearl onions, (3) green olives, ... sweet gherkin pickles, sweet mixed pickles, imported pickled cauliflower ... in aqua and flint clear glass glass stopper with cork ring gasket. This ~could~ validate the same date range (late 1890s-1898ish) handblown, applied crude lip of the L&S Catsup and condiment bottles - and clone look-alike Heinz bottles for competitive (raiding) sales. This production date would then not be mid-1890s (1894-1896) but late-1890s building and plant acquisition (1897-1899) making this bottle a ~1-2-3 year or less production era. Even more a shelfer as this would be the earliest of the Lutz & Schramm food bots as handblowm and crude and thick tooled top - with a unique Hamilton glass plant manufacture that would also be associated with the Heinz food bottles and jars.

@@CrickDiggersInc Even Kraft-Heinz company historical museum doesnt have all their bots. They DO have some wooden ruler in the collection labeled Lutz & Schramm. Not definitive database or photo catalogue of food bots, ketchups, or pepper sauces as far as I know. There is the Ketchup book (I don't have) that is a quite complete commentary (and word salad) of ketchups, makers, but no explicit database, dates, glass bottle producer dates etc. The Heinz database (sharing info of you-all with the Bottle Research Group with the oriignal database that I got them to reorganize and it is now quite massive and documented. The further bots that are now photoed and ID-d, that information for Heinz then becomes such an online database of accurate information. Need to see what Plane Digger found - as he says he has an unlisted Heinz (so far one-of-a-kind, $100-$300 !) bot. BRG is redoing their entire database of bottles, emboings, producers, glass producers, and Bill said they are now up to "B" (!) in making all of the many gigantic revisions, corrections, and additional photos and research. Even Bill is saying "only know" what info there will be when they get to "H" and Heinz with all of my continuing research of your-all finds (!). So if you want to acquire the Ketchup book for me, that would be a massive trade for knowing more of the 1500 (!) ketchups that were said to be out there. Just like finding out that there are (now) 15+ different bottle machines - when you only think 2 or 3. And those automatic machines number doesn't account for who and what number of semi-automatic machines were out there (!). So research and continued rediscovery of all this lost information creates greater bottle discoveries and backstories for everybody to read and know.

Heinz ketchup bottle - rare ! - "F" The Heinz ketchup 8-sided with the single F base embossing has a very singular (and another anomalous backstory of bottles being dug by current collectors). There was a previous succession of Fairmont Bottle and Jar Co and Jones Brothers (1892-1914) at Fairmont WV - but there iare NO "F" maker's mark from them - at any time ! There is the Owens Bottle Company of Toledo Ohio who built their OWN Fairmont WV glass plant (that became so huge - mega city industrial zone) (1909-1981). This ketchup is anomalous in that it -IS- a Heinz ketchup by 1880s patent design shape - or it is a patent infringement by another ketchup producer (and by Owens who was or will be a contract maker FOR Heinz bottles and jars (1910-1960s +). There is no H J Heinz Co Pittsburgh PA, (central) bottle number, or maker's mark. (1880-1910) all handblowns and start of machine mades (1905-1910) were made at Heinz Glass plant Sharpsburg PA with this said embossing. (1910-1920) Heinz quits making bottles and contracts out such production to people - WITH the same embossed H J Heinz Co Pittsburgh USA, bottle number and maker's mark. (1920-1960s+) Heinz embossing is removed, while the bot number and maker's mark continues up into 1960s+. This bottle can only be made by Owens, not the other (1900ish-1914) Fairmont Glass Works people. This would be in that (1909-1910) period before they were contracted out. Like others recently being found, this goes against the homogenous backstory that ALL Heinz glass (1900-1910) were at Sharpsburg. Only after (1910+) were contract makers involved. So this bot - WITH NO BOTTLE NUMBER - but a Heinz patent design shape - is a very rare and special Owens Heinz bottle - that has no bottle number - or Owens and the competitor ketchup maker cloned the shape in that (1909-1910 +?) period. Owens would then go onto start making valid Heinz ketchup bottles (1910-1960s+). As such, with another W T & A Hamilton Co Pittsburgh, making the same ketchup bottle with embossing, bottle number, and maker's mark (G Lassy collection), ... this shows that Heinz was restarting to have sample productions made by outside contractors - before they eventually turned to 100% contract production. Further validation is (Jamie Kiehl collection) with another ketchup having the same embossing and machine made production date (1905-1910) with no maker's mark - and could be another hidden contract maker's bottles. The singular "F" mark here with the Owens Bottle Company square with O mark (1919-1929) would contnue until the Owens-Illinois Glass merger in 1929 and Fairmont "F" became plant 3. So this Heinz - Owens bottle is rare in that it was a contract production sample in that short (1909-1910) period of 1-2 years. You ALL need to keep looking for these Heinz bots - as Jaimie just dug up a handblown dating back into the (1893-1902ish) period of Sharpsburg. There are many more to be found. Plane Digger Cam mentions he found an unlisted Heinz - upon receiving the Heinz database of food category bottles and numbers. This ketchup is $100-300 as it is the first one-of-a-kind known to exist ... same as GLassy's WTA Hamilton production sample bottle. And Askjem in SD just dug up (grrr !!!) a small salesman Heinz ketchup (no mention of bottle number) and those are rare - and ZING !!! A $100-300 bot ....
