Very sad that no mention is made here of Ian's achievements in baseball. As a person who crosses over both sports I believe baseball made Ian the great tactician he was. He atttained elite level being the catcher for SA for several seasons playing at Claxton Shield (CS) level. As baseball people will say the catcher is the onfield general and tactician of a game. He got to he point where he had to choose between the two sports. In those days it was a foregone conclusion but today we've had over 40 Aussies play in MLB since 1985. Norman O'Neill and Neil Harvey (and his brothers) were also elite players as were many from that era. A photo of Bradman's Invincibles all suited up in baseball uniform used to adorn the MCG's Long Room. I met Ian and saw him play in a CS Legends game around 2002 and the man could still throw darts from home plate to second to catch a stealing baserunner. He was a good bloke to speak with and treated we volunteers with respect. Interestingly, the great Victor Trumper was also an off season baseball player with the Paddington club and a letter he wrote to a budding schoolboy cricketer can be found with a search. So the connections between the two sports goes back a long way.

My favorite commentator and his views and opinions always stagers me. His passion towards the game is clearly visible in his commentary as well. I have not seen him while playing but can understand what kind of player he was during that time. Always I likes Australian panelists commentators as their commentary gives more insight about the game. No wonder why Australian team produces great cricketers all the time as their system is so strong and no favoritism/worship exists on the players.

As an Englishman, I've always had a lot of time for Ian Chappell. You get honesty, straight talking and loads of common sense. Furthermore, anyone who stands up to the bully-boy Botham is a good guy. The latter was unambiguously someone who liked to throw his weight around and dominate people - that makes him a little guy in my eyes - good cricketer, terrible person

Congratulations to Ian Chappell as he’s just retired to tv commentary. Hopefully we haven’t herd the last of him completely. I remember god must of been 1977 in the Sunday times paper you,d get in the middle was a different cricket legend each week iron on picture . So mum would get me a white shirt and iron on Ian Chappell on it. We had many legend ironed on, Tony Greg, Dennis Lilly, the list goes on. Another thing we had them days which I can’t find pics of only in my old photo albums is the old bucket hats that went past your eyes that had like a red or blue coloured window you look through. this is a wonderful episode. i never liked chappelli, only known him as a commentator, but he's a great story teller and a straight forward personality.

Love Chappelli, straight shooter, tough cricketer. Batted at three and took the heat. No helmets , he was never afraid of the short ball and he faced some of the fiercest barrages cricket has ever seen. Astute and attacking captain. Couldn't agree with him more about waugh being a selfish cricketer, hiding down the order, handing the strike to tail enders. Ian Chappell commanded the respect of all his players and fought for them, they would have walked over hot coals for him. The same could not be said of the likes of clarke and waugh. I still have the Ian Chappell Gray Nicholls Scoop Supertest that my dad gave me 45 years ago .

A GREAT Australian Captain - up there with the best ever. Tells a great yarn - I could listen to him all day. Won the Sheffield Shield in his first year as captain in 1970/71. Took over the Australian Captaincy - in February ‘71. There was an immediate change in the tactics of the Australian team - if England would have scored 302 in the 2nd innings of that 7th Test - Australian would had drawn the test & the series & retained The Ashes! However Chappelli - went on from that time to NEVER lose a Test Series. The weapons he had AND how he used them! The only weakness the team has - was one opening position. Chappelli often come in when Australia were 1 for not many! The one cricketer I’d love to meet.

Wonderful interview with a truly great player. I LOVE the way he made Botham shake in their recent TV meeting when Botham, who can barely string a sentence together, idiotically tried to outtalk him. I thought Botham was going to cry! (I'm Welsh BTW - Welsh Welsh not NSW Welsh!)

I admire Ian Chappell but I think he was always jealous of Steve Waugh, plain and simple. Steve Waugh WAS NOT SELLFISH!! He came into a team in trouble at 19/20 years of age and became one of the TOUGHEST players in history as a result of part 1 of his career. In part 2 of his career, when he became captain, S.W's team won 15/16 tests in a row. And, you can put that down to his baptism of fire in his early stages of his career when the Australian team was a mess due to numerous circumstances. Ian Chappell unfortunately holds grudges. Still a legend.

He was a harsh, yet fair captain Ian Chappell who took responsibility for his team when it mattered. It's a pity he didn't get along with Don, but apparently Bradman had a hard time of it early, as his team mates did. WSC was a good thing, and is partly responsible for the salaries involved with the IPL. So along with A W Greig, and Mr Packer it was a saving grace for not just cricket, but also other facets of Australian sport. 😊

What's the real reason for the long feud with Botham? I heard it was because Chappelli slagged off the Royal Family in a pub and Botham took exception to it (and they'd both had a few) and he chased him into the car park and was going to batter him, but Chappell escaped. True or urban myth?

Chappell has always been petty in his criticism of Bradman; the whole problem stems from the family feud between Bradman & Vic Richardson dating from before Chappell was born.

How embarrassing - Botham an all time great and Steve Waugh our greatest ever captain. Tells us about South Africa in 1969 when you couldn't crack 100 in TOTAL in the full series.

I smile at all the swearing on these interviews. Great Australian characteristic. You'd never get that up here. The clowns on sky apologise if you hear swearing from the crowd at football games.

Chappelli is probably correct in his appraisal of Botham as a cricketer. Too many Australian players accorded him more respect than he deserved and may have been intimidated by him. Compare that to how West Indian players rated him and the fact is they DIDN'T rate him at all. His batting average against the Windies was a mere 21.45 and his bowling average was in the mid 30's! Hardly stellar figures for an alleged top notch all-rounder.

The bloke is a sad bitter old man who tried to bully a 21 year old and couldn't take it when he got called out on it.

40 year feud; amazing... He should rate SWaugh higher, of course MWaugh was more talented however did he dominate an Ashes series in 89 the way his twin did. Botham was more than a bully and basher of a batsman. While I would rate him as the best all rounder of all time, or in the same breath as Sobers/Miller/Kallis/IKhan he was still a bona-fide great player

Bradman was the greatest cricketer bar none. A lot is made about Sobers' ability with bat and ball, but frankly Bradman didn't have to bowl. His batting ensured you could put another dedicated world class bowler in the team. But as a human being, he always fell short. He was cold and extremely rigid. We hear from the States at the moment of Biden looking to forgive student loans. Well you can hear the American Bradmans now ... well if I had to pay off my loans, then so should they. His super rigid detail-oriented (small picture) thinking sought to maintain the status quo at all costs

Ian Chappell's knowledge, unbiased view (without rubbish nationalism), honesty, straightforwardness (spoke against orthodox Bradman & childish rookie Botham), mental strength, leadership skill & over-all approach to the life is realistic. He is a revolutionary, forever-relevant thinker of the game. Only a few problems with him - his biased view on greatest batsman Rahul Dravid & great batsman & greatest captain game has ever seen Steve Waugh, likeable Kim Huges and Chappell's own moustache (anybody in moustache looks like a feudal idiot)
