Just a good lad finding what is nice and what is sh*te. That why I like your vids Gaz. The red spot on Tefal pans supposedly turn all red when up to temperature, but I don't know if that applies to having ingredients in there as well. Always toast a bun to hold hot food. The comment aboyut meat "substitutes" is bang on. I have worked with veggies and a vegan who crave the "meat taste" but don't like it on their conscience. Glad you're doing well mate!

My husband has changed to eat a vegan diet due to chronic kidney disease, and the results are fantastic, its working for him!! We cook a lot of our food from scratch, and we did before as well, but its nice to take a break from food prep and grab something convenient for a change. We were both meat eaters before so the plant range at aldi is well received by us. Its a convenience range that mimics a regular meat menu. It was never going to taste like meat on its own. Artificial flavouring hasn't progressed that far yet, or at least that's what we think. However, stick it in a bun with some lettuce, tomato slices and burger relish with a slice of vegan cheese with a side of chips and its good to go. Protein in a convenient form that we didn't spend hours preparing. We've tried several items in the range and get on well with them. You are looking well I'm glad to see, keep going Gareth. 👍

I don't understand why people get confused by vegetarians wanting foods that taste like meat. Most people don't become vegetarian because they don't like the taste of meat they become vegetarian due to not wanting to actually eat animals!

I get that as I used to be vegetarian myself, but I always found the ready meal meat subs a let down, its better to get a bunch of pulses and soy protein and make it taste good in patty style, but more time consuming I found. I went back to eating meat and fish, because my health was suffering, and I wasn't getting the benefit from supplements. So I try to have a balance of vegan tasty meals, a bit of meat, a bit of fish. It is hard to cost stuff that has all the nutrient requirements for my wee family while working, I am off today so made a lovely black bean and mushroom Spanish style casserole type of thing with plain basmati rice, delicious. I respect folk that can commit to a vegan diet and work out the calcium, and protein requirements, I feel guilty sometimes, because it didn't work out for me.

Exactly right about being a meat eater that is switching or has switched to plant based. If you've loved the taste of say chicken or bacon but decided to switch for health or ethical reasons then think of this approach as a half way house. I'm toying with the idea of going vegetarian and have tried some substitutes. In reality there is nothing to replace meat but the substitutes are bound to improve and get closer to the real thing. Mankind destroys it's environment, we should look at maybe look at the way we treat animals and consider that an animal might go through a painful death just so we can have a burger or a sausage. On a lighter note....Love your reviews and keep them coming, meat or otherwise.

I was raised pescatarian from birth, then from age 7-19 I was vegetarian, and from age 19-30 I was vegan. I went back to pescatarian in January this year. I’ve never eaten land meat in my entire life, only fish. I eat these products, I’m obsessed with Beyond burgers, I love plant-based “chicken”, I use meat substitutes a lot. That’s what I ate growing up so that’s what I’m used to. I’ve never been tempted to eat real meat, and I don’t think I’ll ever be interested in it. The thought of it makes me gag. For most vegans/vegetarians who DID used to eat meat, they didn’t stop eating meat because they didn’t like the taste. They did it for ethical reasons. They don’t want to eat something which was once alive, and killed for them basically. So to them, foods like this are familiar to them and similar to what they’re used to eating but without an animal being harmed in the process. It’s very simple really. I don’t understand why so many people can’t comprehend that.

@@neilgodwin6531 the “plants are alive and killed for us” argument is stupid. I’m not getting into that. Yes of course I’ve seen fish thrashing around, I couldn’t go fishing and kill fish myself, as it upsets me. I’ve never eaten lobsters, or any other form of shellfish/molluscs/crustacians. I feel pretty comfortable in my morals knowing that being an almost life-long vegan/vegetarian that I’ve caused the least amount of harm, and me now eating fish once a week after 31 years of not eating it, and never eating meat in my life, still means I’ve caused a helluva lot less animal deaths than the average person. I’m guessing I’ve caused much less harm than you. ✌🏼

It's fascinating that Aldi chose to call them 'no pork patties', when they could have raised the perceived value of the product dramatically by calling it 'no Aberdeen Angus steak patties'. Gareth mate, a lot of vegetarians and vegans used to eat meat, and enjoyed it. They still would enjoy the flavour and taste of meat, but made the choice due to ethical reasons - doesn't mean meat isn't tasty. This kind of food is their alternative. If I went vegetarian (might do?) I'd still miss the taste and texture of meat as I love burgers, pork pies, spicy chicken fillets, chick kiev etc, so if there were veggie alternatives I'd definitely be going for them.

OK mate, tiz time for honesty. I have seen soaked beer mats at closing time look more edible and exciting. And yes I totally agree with you. It you want meat( in whatever form you fancy. Then 'Ave some) Play doh sausage, burger, bacon steak and chicken will never be as good as the real deal 🍔🥓🐔🍗🥩. I think you said once or twice it was a good herby taste, fine if you want a herb burger. But as Bertie Bassett says : ". It takes all sorts ". Take care my old mucker. Allan&Family. Good luck with the hospital appointment 🍀🏥👍🤞

I am a long time vegan. You are right, I would not want to buy these. There are better options. I have the advantage of not knowing Pork to compare it to. So, were I to try it, it would just be to taste it and see if I like it in it’s own right. But I don’t think I will bother. It does not look appealing. I would probably mix sweetcorn in batter and fry that into a similar shape and put that in a bun. But great video as usual.

You're bang on, most vegans I know don't buy these products, it's a halfway house between eating meat and becoming vegan. They're also really simple and easy to have in a social setting when everyone else is having burgers etc and you don't want to be the obvious odd one out. But generally I think most vegans find these products quite gimmicky and substandard.

Speaking as a pescatarian that eats some vegan food, I eat a few meat substitutes. The best ones (IMO) are " Beyond meat burgers", "Greggs vegan sausage rolls", "Richmond meat free sausages ", "Tesco plant based chicken burgers" And Aldi plant based sausages in batter. I eat them because I like them. It's all about cholestrol with me. If cholestrol is not an issue then stick with meat, unless you're someone that doesn't like the killing of animals (it's not for me to judge). I will say though a lot of these products are better air fried or cooked in a "George Foreman". I'll give these a go. I don't know, running out of ketchup, That's almost like running out of oxygen. BTW your "Clarice" was really good, and you did mention herbs. Another great video Gareth, glad you're on the mend.

I looked at Aldi’s plant-based range the other day and it doesn’t actually tell you on the front of the box what kind of food it is, just what it is not, which is a bit worrying. I am puzzled as to why they would say “no pork”. It also has no beef, no lamb, no fish, so why pick pork? Maybe they hope the sage will make us think of pork stuffing flavoured with sage. Nope, not even close. This is vegan junk food, or pretend pork so people can feel all virtuous. I am not a vegetarian or a vegan, but sometimes I just want something a bit different, so I have a look at the vegetarian and vegan ranges in the supermarket, but this really doesn’t appeal to me at all. I am glad I didn’t buy it now. P.S. Glad it was just the pan that was well-oiled! Keep going, you are getting there. 😊

My thoughts Gaz? If you want the flavour of pork, then EAT effing PORK!!!!! Another great comparison would be to compare the ingredients with real pork patties.... I bet the real pork has less than half the ingredients. A recent study showed these vegan meat substitutes are seriously bad for your health when compared to real meat.

Thanks Gareth I noticed the careful positioning of the word 'pork too, if these things are so good they shouldn't need to mention any type of meat to sell them. For the record I do like various 'plant' based homemade patties (felafel, onion bhaji or tattie scones anyone? ). Hope the checkup works out well 😊

Granted they look rank. But would meat eaters quit picking on veggies in the posts. We don't wanna eat meat. That is my choice. I don't slag meat eaters for eating meat. Happily been veg for 40 years. I can't eat meat cause it's a waste picking all the undesirables out of it. Waste of money to me. And the prepacked frozen veggie stuff is full of salt and sugar. I don't need someone slagging me off for being veggie? Not personally YET.

I cannot understand why producers of vegan or vegetarian products have to make them something like animal products (Tofu sausages, Oat milk and so on). Vegans or vegetarians have decided not to eat meat or animal products in general - why make their food similar in some way? I like tofu, but i treat it as tofu not something that is meant to resemble meat. Until now, i have tasted few lookalike products and not a single one has worked for me. Almond milk is ok, in the European Union it is not allowed to call it milk, it is sold as almond drink. Vegetarian cheese is just terrible! Anyway, thank you for taking one for the community!

The way I look at things like that is, it's more like a fritter or a veg pattie. The marketing is by the company not the customer. I'm not vegetarian but I have made homemade vegeburgers when I needed to use stuff up, and I do like vegetarian fritters using leftovers with a bit of cheese in it. I wouldn't even expect those burgers you've just tried to be anything like meat - ridiculous marketing think.

My Cumberland sausages yesterday were delicious; genuine pork for this carnivore. Humans are omnivores but veg alone can be flavourless, hence the added herbs and spices. 😊

As a serving suggestion I would advise the following... ditch the soya gloop burger and then treat that lovely buttered roll to at least 4 rashers of bacon and brown (or red) sauce. Then, when you've eaten that, make another bacon butty and enjoy life!

I think that red dot is just a gimmick to sell pans. I've watched for several minutes and it hardly changes. Why can't the manufacturer have it change from red to green, like a traffic light? Anyway, quickest method for testing the oil temperature is with the tip of bamboo chopsticks. If they start bubbling, then it's hot enough.

I'm neither a vegetarian nor a vegan but when it comes to burgers, sausages, mincemeat etc I only eat plant based. You don't know what part of the animal is in the meat based product 🤢 The Co Op incredible vegan quarter pounder burgers are lovely, they taste like they have been cooked on a bbq, well worth a try. Greggs vegan sausage rolls and their no steak bakes are good also, tasty and with no gristly bits to be found 🤢😂 Shame they don't sell their vegetable bakes anymore 🙄
