In the late 1970s and early 1980s a sexual predator was on the loose. Two little girls had heard about the man dubbed the “Southwest Calgary Rapist,” but they never imagined they would be attacked while riding their bikes one hot sunny day.
At the same time, homicide investigators were on the trail for a killer. Follow along as Senior Crime Reporter Nancy Hixt shares the stories of those attacked and the steps police took in their hunt for a predator.

@@GnOmOnG no. in the UK there is a whole life order for very serious crimes which means natural life behind bars unless there are exceptional compassionate circumstances such as terminal illness. a normal life sentence is between 15 to 20 years before parole, but the offende is on license for the rest of their lives.

I think it was ridiculous that the teacher told her she was too clingy to the mom if it wasn’t for the teacher the mom would continuously have walked Kimmy to school five years old is too young to go to school on your own in the blistering cold!! And then to make it worse the family was bullied blamed for everything that happened to Kimmythat had nothing to do with them except for the fact that they were pressured into letting Kimmy walk to school on her own! I have thought about Kimmie over the years and as I grew older I thought of her mother and siblings. I recall that time so very vividly, even though I was so young. I was the exact same age as Kimmie I lived in SW Calgary with my mom and two brothers. I was in kindergarten and my school picture is much the same as Kimmie; dark hair, brown eyes and pigtails with bangs. The news of Kimmie scared me terribly as a child. It was on the news everyday. I recall never wanting to encounter the bad man my mom and the news talked about so I would cry every time I was away from my mom. I believe Kimmie's case affected my mother for many, many years and the world changed for her at that time, as my brothers and I were not allowed to venture far from sight. I'm terribly saddened that this monster is allowed freedoms to society as a "moderate" risk to reoffend. This monster is clearly not right in the head. I agree with Evelyn Thomson, life should mean life. God bless You Evelyn Thompson and family. I have thought of you all so much over the years and I will never forget Kimmie.

I was nine and attended elementary school, close to where this happened. Afterwards, teachers, family’s and students were afraid. I was afraid, hearing how her body was found. Was too young to remember the specific details, but there was always a memory of being afraid and it was about a girl murdered and how her body was found. Around five years ago, her story was being reported on the news and the familiar pictures of Kimmie triggered all the memories of that time. Forty years later, I am reading the details and relating it to that experience as a child. RIP Kimmie.

Teachers have ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT to tell a parent how to parent their children - they are there to educate kids and nothing more unless they see signs of abuse. The mother should have been insulted by that teachers remarks, I know I would have been and told that teacher it’s none of their business how close me and my child were. Because of that remark a child lost her life by walking to school alone. Poor little Kimmy deserved the protection of her mum for many more years of walking to school - I didn’t let any of mine walk to school alone until they were in senior school and it didn’t harm any of them other than create a close family with all four now in their 30’s and 40’s.

I was a good friend to Kimmy and I remember that she was in my Kindergarten class. I just found her in my class picture. She was very sweet and kind. She was shy but very nice when she warmed up to someone. I remember this like yesterday.

JEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZ !!!!!! OMG !!!! 5 Year old Kimmy walked to school by herself ?????? Because the stupid teacher said she was to dependent on her mother ??????? Hope that teacher was fired ...I hope Kimmys mother finds some peace in her life .

The teacher didn’t say let her walk to school alone. She said she was just a bit too dependent. The mum made the decision to let her walk to school. It was ultimately the mums poor decision made on her own.

Life should mean life, but it never seems to in Canada. Only those like Paul Bernardo and Russell Williams seem to have life terms cause they have a high risk to reoffend, but who knows if that may change someday.

As someone born in '71 I can promise you that parenting was a lot different back then. I walked to school alone or with a group of kids the same age as I was. I started staying alone when my mom went to work or out at night starting at the ripe old age of 9. I agree that it seems like a lot by today's standards and I didn't let my kids stay alone or walk to/from school without an adult...a trusted adult who I knew and not just someone's mom. As for listening to the teacher's crazy suggestion we have to remember that doctors, teachers and cops (and a handful of other professions) were authorities on everything and we didn't second their god-like advice or direction. If this mom wasn't as formally educated as the teacher, was a single mom with a boyfriend etc., she likely already felt like she was subpar at parenting. Someone in authority makes a suggestion and lots of people will second guess their gut instincts. RIP Kimmie

I'm a mother, and under no circumstances would I listen to a teacher telling me to let my 5 year old be more independent. There's safer ways to do that then letting her walk to school. Shame on you

That teacher had a lot of nerve telling the Mom that Kimmie was too dependent on her. First, it’s none of her business and second, Kimmie was just a little kid. And why didn’t the school call to let the Mom know her daughter didn’t come to school? I can’t imagine the guilt her Mom must have felt for not going with her gut instinct.

Mother misunderstood what the teacher meant by letting the child be more independent . …….. such as dressing herself, brushing her teeth by herself, picking up her clothes off the floor in her room. Should be common sense to NOT allow a 5 year child to walk to school alone .

And you know the teacher was talking about those things? I think mom wouldn't have even entertained her walking to school alone if it had not been mentioned by the teacher. Though, no teacher would be telling me to allow that, nor would I have let her. That said. When I was growing up, we walked to and from school at that age.

It’s completely disgusting that he was allowed out on parole after such a long and extended pattern of horrific crimes -plus we are well aware that these types of proclivities never go away. It’s pretty easy to “behave” in prison when there are no young girls around to assault or kill. You can see that poor mother still suffers as much as when it first occurred. Maybe the parole board should could see how comfortable they feel living next door to a “moderate risk” of reoffending parolee with a history of heinous crimes against very young children. People have committed murder while wearing ankle monitors so it’s ridiculous to suggest they can keep society safe from him.

I started walking to school at 6yrs old, it was a 2km walk, this was in 1985/1986, i have 4 kids myself now i won't even let my 18yr old walk the 800mtrs to her work in the dark, my 11yr old isn't even allowed out the front alone and even though things a LITTLE bit safer in Australia and it was a much different time when i was a kid i still refuse to allow my kids to do that stuff, there are just too many people in this world with fvcked up intentions. Im trying soooo hard not to be annoyed at this mum for letting her 5yr old walk alone, im sure the guilt alone will have haunted her all this time but still....
