Nick Ross and Sue Cook present. Cases include the murders of Abdur Rashid in East London, Keith Slater in Hull and a Leeds conman, who apparently looks like Geoff Capes.

Crimewatch was in its prime back then. Meticulous reconstructions, measured and informative presenting, the whole programme was so well produced.

It’s certainly a tight knit Bangladeshi community around Whitechapel. I used to live almost opposite the East London mosque about 7 years ago and it’s still the same. Although it’s a lot more touristy now than it was in the 80’s. I can understand why his murder is still unsolved because the wall of silence can be impenetrable in that area.

Keith Slater's murder was solved 18 years later, the killer was Martin Brown, his brother Patrick was friends with a man called Joe Henry who had an affair with Carol Slater, Keith's wife. Brown emigrated to Australia shortly after the murder but a matchbox found near the crime scene on the night it happened helped to convict him, he was into devil worship and had written his date of birth and the date of the murder on the box, together with the number 6 which had some significance to devil worship. He was extradited from Australia to stand trial and, at first denied that he was involved but has since confessed that he did it but also insists that he wasn't alone, he delivered the stab wounds but says that he was ordered to carry it out. Given the fact that he and his brother were friends with a guy who had had an affair with Carol, I'm inclined to believe that he was acting on orders, possibly given out by Joe Henry as an act of revenge. There was a crimewatch solved episode on the case a few years ago

This the first episode of Crimewatch I can remember watching. I vividly remember the conman being described as a Geoff Capes lookalike. My bedtime was 9pm in those days so I’m guessing this was on over half term!

The Sunderland train station theft made me laugh. He must have been sick that he went all the way to Torquay and still got caught.

The photofit of the Keith Slater suspect is a very good likeness of the convicted killer, Martin Brown.

The was a Crimewatch Solved programme made about the Keith Slater murder. It's one of the most bizarre cases I've ever heard of.

John Conboy or Conroy. The policeman in the Leeds conman case was the same officer in charge of the John Speed murder inquiry.
