1:00 After D-Day Germany had to fight on _three_ fronts, Normandy, France, Italy and the Russian front. Within a couple months a fourth front opened with landings in Southern France and the start of Operation Dragoon, though this later merged with the Normandy front as both progressed eastwards.

The effectiveness of bombing is a myth. The west bombed because that's all they were capable of doing technically. I.e. no position to meet the Nazis on the battlefield till they suffered significant losses on the Eastern Front

7:00; My first assignment as a 2LT, was to Flint Kasserne in Bad Tölz Germany. The black and white film just does not do it Justice. It is located in a freaking BEAUTIFUL setting at the foot of the Alps, 60k’s south of Munchen. It was the long time home of the very first Special Forces Group. 10th SFG(A), when I got there, there was only a single special forces battalion holding down the fort. In the Cold War, the unit was to go to ground, let the battle pass them by and then pop up in the rear of the Warsaw Pact forces and fight as partisans. Unfortunately, when the Iron Curtain collapsed, American forces were drawn down and a much hated special forces colonel, called “el gato maliante” wanted to get a star, so he fudged the books and that base, shangri la, was handed back to the Germans. I, actually, was the very last soldier to move from Bad Tölz to our new home in the middle of a major city, Stuttgart. So instead of being able to just walk out the gate and train, it became exponentially more difficult and expensive to do the kind of training that we need to do for special forces. I will say one thing that was a beautiful and awesome place to live and work and I grieve at the loss.

@@leondobre7498Apparently that fighting didn't count. The video declares that there wasn't a 'second front' until the Allies landed in Normandy. So since it didn't count it didn't cause the Germans to redeploy divisions of troops and tanks, airplanes and logistics away from the Eastern front against the Soviets.

12:40; by having two separate entities side by side, but not working together seems to indicate a unity of effort, however, it violates the unity of command, there is no close coordination, nor is there any way to share intelligence or disseminate what information is available/derived from reconnaissance. Additionally, while the Wehrmacht trains for combined arms combat, the SS did not.

There is miles of film. A small percentage of each reel is in focus or of interest. (Still frames of countryside, rivers, desert and mountain scenes) many many reels have not be viewed since the end of the war. They are stored at the library of Congress. Some may be stored in the military archives department. All countries had camera men. The film deteriorates over time. If not stored in a special environment. There’s a couple documentaries on restoring and colorization of some film clips. Lastly is your here still. They used professional lip readers to interpret the words being spoken! The amount of time and special care to view and restore the film is high. Last I remember researching this it was estimated that thousands of reels need reviewed. United States films who knows about the other countries.

After the war some Waffen-SS survivors made their way to the French Foreign Legion and ended up fighting (and dying) in places like Dien Bien Phu. 🤔 History is full of twists ..

Not really, because about 450,000 Ukrainians fought alongside the Soviets, while only about 45,000 joined the SS. Most were killed, but less than 1% got out by hiding among genuine refugees. Maybe as much as half got to Canada, so not a lot compared to the figures.

It is unfortunate that in all these great quality documentaries there is never any mention of Greece, which resisted the Axis powers for much much longer than any country that was invaded . Also, no mention of the atrocities committed by Nazis where thousands of civilians were killed while others starved to death. Everyone focuses of Holland Poland and France while other countries don’t even get mentioned.

The second world war also didn't start in 1938 between Germany and Poland. It started in 1937 between China and Japan at the Marco Pollo bridge.

I believe we already have a well used and familiar name for the organization. It is called the Armed, or Waffen SS. These were elite soldiers of the Third Reich, toughly trained, and better equipped than the regular German Army, the Wehrmacht. They were designated to be a sort of backbone to the Armed Forces, many times used as firefighters, like in early 1943 in the Ostfront after the Stalingrad catastrophe, when not only the German 6th Army was destroyed, but the whole frontline of the Southern Army Group rolled up as well, together with their Axis allied armies: Two Romanian armies, one Italian and one Hungarian Army. In fact, the Führer later complained, that because of the subpar performance of his allies, a 750 km. wide frontline torn open to the advancing Red Army. Who did he call? The Waffen SS of course. Three reinforced divisions in fact, the LSAH, the Das Reich, and the Wikings. This was a huge logistical feat as well on a short notice. Loaded army trains had followed each other at a short distance, like a never ending snake, while huge signs shouted at every trains station: "Die Räden müssen rollen für den Sieg! The wheels must turn for Victory!

As an American history teacher in the U.S. the powers that be wants to paint a picture that the U.S. came in & saved the day, therefore, the Americans beat the Germans. In reality, it was Russia that was doing the bulk of the fighting against the Nazi's. While America's entry was instrumental in victory for the Allied forces, the Russians deserve a lot more credit than they're given. Hats off to all the soldiers that fought in this despicable battle. These poor kids (from all sides) are brainwashed into believing their opponent is evil & end up killing men that they probably have much more in common with than the powers that sent them into battle. The rich, elite, top 5% declare wars & the common people fight them. Very sad

Very good presentation of the Armed SS corp. Yet there is no reference to the fact that most of the SS soldiers were under the influence of Pervitin pills that made them able to fight non-stop for almost 48 hours with a 2-3 hour gap for rest, which made a huge difference for the lightning war against France.

Half right. Perviten allowed them to go ten days without sleep, then they crashed for three days straight. Allied planners knew this, so factored it in when planning offensives. That's why the Nazis didn't win anywhere after Oct 1942.

All militaries take an oath of service, Americans to their constitution, British and Commonwealth to their monarch in parliament, and all others similarly. The important point is that most are accompanied by instructions on military law and duty, and pretty much all include sections on illegal orders. The Nazis didn't.

The picture of the surrendering SS soldier wearing glasses ( time 51:11 ) I seen this picture of him several times. That soldier looks more like a frighten child than a trained fanatic. The look on his face shows to me that he is in total disbelief that he is on the bad side of this war and that he is scared to death. Also.I noticed that his uniform wasn’t worn and that he had brass framed glasses. This information can mean that he hasn’t seen much or any combat . I heard vets talk about not wearing any jewelry for fear of it reflecting and giving up their position. . This person has always piqued my curiosity if anyone knows more about him please tell me. PS These videos are absolutely incredible.completely professional work.

I didn' t knew this, when i worked in this company, because the man wasn' t tall, i heared this, some time later from annother former coworker. The man , who was. in SS at wars end, told him, that he came to SS unwanted as a teenager. He told that one day an official came to his parents, and parents of other boys. He, the official ,let the Boys sign (unterschreiben) a document , from which they thought, it is from Wehrmacht, but he (my former coworker) found himself in SS. Don' t know, If this true, but at wars end, betray is not Impossible.

Incredibly poorly researched piece. Waffen-SS divisions were multi-tiered: volunteers and ‘named’ units (eg Leibstandarte, Totenkopf, Viking etc) and conscripted men from occupied territories. They couldn’t be conscripted in Wehrmacht due to racial purity laws thus a workaround solution was created: national Waffen-SS units (eg Latvian 15th or Estonian 20th Waffen SS divisions). None were volunteer units, although there were individual volunteers among them. They were also not participating in the heinous war crimes against civilians often associated with ‘German’ Waffen-SS or Sonderkommando units (yes, these are different unit types). This is further underlined by the fact that the Baltic Waffen-SS units were providing security and convoy during the Nuremberg trials. Yep, many of the men in those white helmets were in fact Estonians and Latvians. Too broad a brush here.

War itself is a war crime. There is no such thing as a civilized war. War can only be heinous disgusting and vile. Every soldier killed, every holocaust death, every bombing - they're all equally atrocious and traumatic. The key is not to start wars in the first place like Germany did. Because once you start a war you need to be prepared for the consequences of your actions, and the common people must also prepare for the consequences of thinking they could stand by and say nothing when they knew they were allowing genocide and unprovoked imperialist wars to go on unabated, and mostly cheering it on with pride. Dresden was but a touch of karma for every citizen who cheered the Nazis' imperialist victories and genocidal aims, thinking they were the infallible master race. They were served but a teaspoon for the ocean of misery they allowed to happen. The cities of Germany were Sodoms and Gomorrahs and the allies were the agents of God. May the same happen to any nation that engages in unprovoked imperialist unnecessary war fueled by hate and racism. And may we all do everything we can to avoid going to war in the first place, and only engage in it when all other options have been exhausted.
