From my experience with finishes & masking, the best masking tape that I have found to seal edges & stop wicking the best, try using the green Frog 🐸 Tape! The factory edge adhesive is said to expand when moisture hits it then sealing any voids! So after applying it you could moisten it with water or just a little thinner so it should seal before you even apply any finish.

Idk, I'm kind of split on the amber stain. On the one hand, I love the enhanced natural wood look, and it really makes that grain pop. On the other hand, that bright almost perfectly white wood, to me, was just calling for something a little more interesting. And there's all kinds of cool stuff you can do with that open grain... It's gonna look fantastic when it's done though, so, eh. lol I'm kinda thinking you probably SHOULD have gotten rid of all that dust, at least before finishing. lol

Agree, black and white contrast before staining looked so good, but I doubt there is a finish that would make it look natural and white, maybe wax?

I have an in-progress guitar (loose take on an LP) using spalted maple for the cap. The density varied from moderately hard to Balsa soft and squishy. I finally broke down and purchased a large bottle of thin superglue and slowly applied it to the maple. It soaked it right up... and it's possible I may be able to polish the top to a rather nice sheen without any finish (TBD). What it did do is make the piece much easier to work with because it now behaved in a much more predictable way. A word of caution for anyone that attempts this... you need excellent ventilation during application of the glue and for any additional wood removal with power tools.. The CA glue will off-gas like mad and you don't want to breath it or get it in your eyes. Power sanding will heat and aerosolize the glue which is also not ideal.

Ben, I'm going to be building an 8 string bass (in octave pairs). The problem is I can't find a bridge for it. Do you know where I can find one? Hi I don't get the whole ''don't put glue on the trussrod'' hassle. The rod I'm getting is all sealed in some rubber material, how is glue around it going to affect it's workings? That's like saying wood around it would affect it's workings? I could imagine anything like it, if the rod wasn't sealed, but in that case, why not just put heatshrink tubing around it? Why take a risk. I could see that epoxy between the rods could cause issues, like the thing jamming and then you break off the nut or so, but how is that going to be the case when it's sealed in shrink?
