Today we’ll start the first of two episodes with Fr. Paul Robinson about the doctrine “Outside the Church there is No Salvation.” And today, we’ll be speaking about Fr. Leonard Feeney, and the organizations that he was a part of: the Saint Benedict Center, and the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart. Why discuss this doctrine, and this movement, commonly known as "Feeneyism" during this point in the Crisis in the Church Series? Because this movement, which started before the 2nd Vatican Council, contains stark warnings about the current traditional movement in the 21st century.
If you'd like to learn more about this series we're doing on the Crisis in the Church or go back and revisit our previous 30 episodes, please visit sspxpodcast.com/crisis
If you have the ability to set up a monthly recurring donation of $5, $10, or $20 on sspxpodcast.com it would help us immensely to complete this Crisis in the Church project.

Fr. Feeney, S.J. was a faithful Catholic Priest. That cannot be said about many of those who claim to be Priests today. The Jesuits aren't very faithful today, many are out and out apostates. Obedience to Jesus the Christ is much more important than to some weak "priests"

"There is no salvation outside the church" "Yes, but don't take that literally. What we really mean is the opposite. Thinking this phrase means what it says is reactionary." Excellent, father. Well done.

Neither did I hear an explanation or refutation. They could only say that feeney should have obeyed, which is not what the Sspx have done.

We were just discussing this habit of the SSPX priests being moved every 4 or 5 years. It's sad, but I can certainly see the wisdom in this.

Historically I don't know how religious priests who served in parishes were moved, but diocesan pastors were in their parish for life in the old code of canon law. A parish priest is the father to his parish. Fathers don't abandon their families and go get new ones. The instability of pastors has led to instability of parish life.

I sympathize with Fr Feeney. He saw the problem of ecumenism very clearly and then overreacted to it. He didn't trust his modernist superiors and this lead to his disobedience. Feeney was in the Jesuits when they were being given over to modernism so his paranoia was understandable.

While I am not a Feeneyite, I do think there is much misinformation about the Feeneyite position and what happened between him and Rome. Would a priest on this channel be willing to record a discussion (or debate?) with Brother Andre Marie from the Saint Benedict Center on this topic? It is my understanding that the SBC does not condemn the baptism of desire view but holds it as an acceptable theological opinion, as well as the theological opinion they hold.

Would probably be a fruitful discussion. I’m not one either but the way I’ve heard Br. Andre explain it hardly sounds like what their opinions are portrayed to be.

@@user-mb2yo9jf9f from hearing Brother Andre it seems like the SBC has cleaned things up that their interpretation fits into what is allowable according to the tradition and the magisterium. And this while still remaining faithful to a strict interpretation on baptism.

"Almost everybody who writes or comments on this subject explains the doctrine by explaining it away, as we shall see further on. He begins by affirming the truth of the axiom, Extra Ecciesiam, etc., and ends by denying it-while continuing to insist vigorously that he is not doing so". - Fr. Love this series but honestly a few things aren't quite right in this one. Fr. Feeny didn't have to recant his statements regarding EENS because he wasn't excommunicated for those statements. He was excommunicated for disobedience. He was restored to communion with the Church by repeating the beginning words of the Athanasian Creed, which are not words that recant belief in EENS but confirm it: "Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the catholic faith. Which faith unless every one do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt he shall perish everlastingly." From what I can find, Fr. Feeny went off the rails on baptism, not on EENS, and his statements on baptism had nothing to do with his excommunication.

Excellent, as always, but there is some important missing information which I offer, though not as an apology for Fr. Feeney's disobedience. The SBC was located in Cambridge, just off the campus of Harvard. Protestant students of very prominent families were being converted. The families were upset and complained to the Archbishop. This is how the trouble started.

It should be noted that, from what I understand, the current St. Benedict Center and Slaves of the Immaculate Heart do not adhere to Feeneyism any longer. They just now emphasize the vitality of baptism and adherence to Catholicism.

The Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary today in Still River MA, religious brothers and sisters, are a wonderful community. Faithful to the Church’s doctrinal and liturgical Tradition, they are doing great things for the Lord and His Church. This is the good fruit of the work of Fr. Leonard Feeney.

This is not an anti-SSPX comment, so please don’t read it as such: For those who are well versed in SSPX history, or at least in the totality of the Crisis in the Church video series, the differences between the disobedience of Fr. Feeney and Abp. Lefebvre may be clear. But for those who are not well versed in the differences, the criticisms that Fr. Robinson made of Fr. Feeney and his followers concerning disobedience could seem a little tone deaf. Perhaps after the episode concerning the proper understanding of Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus, y’all could do an episode on the principles of justified or unjustified disobedience and how these principles have been lived out with the Feeneyites and the SSPX. Also, y’all should have a private conversation with Bro. Andre Marie. I listened to a talk by him once that gave a bit of context that Fr. Robinson was missing concerning why Fr. Feeney didn’t go to Rome, among other things. Lastly, I didn’t know about all of the parents “becoming religious” and leaving behind their children. That’s a little odd. Thank you so much for all of the great work you’ve been doing with this series. I always look forward to new episodes!

Can the next segment explain the doctrinal basis for whether baptism is necessary for salvation, and whether baptism by desire or baptism by blood has been definitively and infallibly defined by the magisterium of the Church? Is baptism by desire or baptism of blood theological opinions or are there dogmatic statement(s) that define these terms?

Did not St. Maximillian Kolbe parents end up going to religious life. This saddens me for it seems like it does ignore the liberal bishops did persecute him. I do agree he went to firm in some cases yet it seems it was a response to the signs of what led to the liberal take over of the council. Even the listen to Br Andre Marie. There was people trying to compromise with liberal bishops in the area. Yet even in the end he just said the Athanasius creed to be patroned back into the church. Which states no salvation outside the church. Many protestants/ masons were influencing the liberal bishops. Hope this helps the sspx and others just unite against the world which are truly trying to save not just the dogma but all dogmas and the mass. Our Lady of Good Success of the Purification pray for us. I enjoy MICM and SSPX. I would not compare sedevacatise with MICM. The brothers write great articles to defend the church and tradition teachings. I know I heard protestants were pushing the influence the college campus where the St. Benedict center was. God bless. May we be of one mind and one body.

Unfortunately this presentation is out of step with the rigor of previous episodes. The issue at this point is no longer Fr Feeyne's particular teaching. It is whether Catholics will submit to the truth that the sacrament of Baptism is necessary.for salvation and that water is necessary for the sacrament. See the Canon of the council of Trent and the chapter on Justification. The SSPX needs to teach their Priest the fact that Holy Mother Church affirms this literally not metaphorically. As an aside what do the Priest who teach salvation by blood or desire think when the read in the creed "one baptism for the remission of sin"?

The implication of justification by water Baptism only is far reaching-across the planet and time. It implies that the vast majority of humanity from the time of the death of Christ to today (the era of the Gospel) literally billions of people have been condemned to hell because through no fault of their own they never heard the Gospel. At the risk of seeming to tell God His business, how is not a win for the Devil? It has other implications which I would rather not put out here as Satan has many agents and the enemies of Christ are legion but to quote from pagan history: it opens up Pandora's Box.

If you were a religious. They are talking about minors being separated from their parents. Husbands and wives being told not to live together as husband and wife. All practices of cults. Do you notice how all the cults, this one, Mormonism, Islam, and the heresy of Protestantism, Jim Jones’ Marxist cult, they all somewhere have sexual sins and perversions attached to them.

"If anyone shall say that the sacrament of baptism is optional, that is, NOT NECESSARY FOR SALVATION, let him be anathema." -Council of Trent: Canon 5 on the Sacrament of Baptism. Case closed. You people are wrong and heterodox about te salvation dogma NO salvation outside the Catholic Church, and Fr. Feeney S. J. was right and orthodox. What you people continue to teach, because Abp Lefebvre believed and taught it, is the real source of the Crisis in the Church, but you can't see it because your founder must be a saint, and saints cannot teach heresy. The reality is: your baptism of desire/blood caveat was condemned at the Council of Florence in the ex Cathedra Bull of Pope Eugene III "Cantate Domino". Can't you people understand that only the Sacrament REGENERATES and justifies through a new spiritual birth ( by which the catechumen is"born again"/anew), and there is no longer the old Adam but "a new creation"? Desire and blood do NOT regenerate..Period. No one is born again and made a New Ceation by any sort of desire or shedding of blood. Here is what the Master you pretend to serve so perfectly says on the subject: "UNLESS a man be BORN AGAIN of WATER and the Holy Spirit, he CANNOT enter the Kingfom of heaven" Got it?
