Cristiano Ronaldo was signed as a spotty, spaghetti-haired teenager from Sporting Lisbon by Manchester United after impressing in a friendly in Portugal in 2003. He had bundles of potential and was seen as the successor to David Beckham, who departed Old Trafford for Spain earlier that summer. Six years and honours such as three league titles, a couple of domestic cups and the Champions League later, Ronaldo was heading down the same path - from Old Trafford to the Bernabeu - in a world-record breaking fee. He was replaced by Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan.
