I remember I was 13 years old watching euro 2004, back then, I was (still am) a huge classic football buff and I was fascinated with this brazilian player, Garrincha, a pure right winger in the golden era of football, that used to have a repetitive but devastating dribble, always reaching the touchline and crossing, the move looks simple, but not even the best ones of the time could stop him. During the Portugal tournament , I started to notice this kid, shirt number 17 with blonde highlights wreaking havoc in the right side of the field, there was something about him, he possessed fancy step overs, had blistering pace and always seem willing to attack, seemingly unafraid to dare. I noticed his signature dribble, a feint, beating opponents with pace and finally crossing or attempting to shoot, it was like if Garrincha spirit was alive again in this kid. Never passed back unless it was absolutely mandatory. Since that tournament I knew I had seen someone special, someone that was going to get into the annals of the sport. 16 years later, that scrawny kid with the blonde highlights and huge piercings would become in my opinion, in the second most complete footballer the world has ever seen, only behind O rei Pelé. People now recognize him as the super fit, record smashing, goal scoring machine that is the best keeper´s nightmare. But for me in the early 2000´s, who witnessed the madness this guy used to bring into the premier league, has become stampled in my head. For me, the last pure right winger, until his transformation.
