I honestly believe it was a mistake that he just took advantage of, I don't think he sent those two idiots in there to slaughter a child. His instructions were clear they were just money hungry, like they didn't even look past two rooms. Also Criston Cole is a psychopath who is acting out of guilt and jealousy in every decision he makes

Also the fact that daemon is smirking doesnt make me belive him at all and given his history he aint above killing a child. I dont find criston cole a psychopath he is a hyporite with roid rage issues while damon is a cold calculated murderer. @@StarrReactions I think we have to understand Criston Cole as a character. Rhaenyra gave him the chance to be a kings guard she was also the one to put him into a situation that ruined his sense of honor. He was her confidant and her protector and to find that the one person u gave what u hold most dear in the world didn’t hold the same standard as u believe is absolutely soul crushing. Not to mention in breaking his vow he also doomed himself to be tortured and doomed to death. When he kills Joffrey he has mental breakdown and prepares to end it all and then he is saved by someone who gave him a new purpose. His new job is to be Alicent sworn protector and shield for her kids. A lot of people seem to brush off that Criston should just get over rhaenyra and stop being mad its been 10 years. However for those 10 years while being jealous and envious of Rhaenyra freedom Alicent and Criston see that Rhaenyra has created a problem that is endangering the lives of Alicent kids n by having bastards which further puts Criston against rhaenyra. Rhaenyra by having obvious bastards creates a succession crisis within the kingdom and weakens her own claim to the throne while strengthening the claim of aegon and alicent other sons at the same time. When the King sees this obvious treason he does nothing but continues to back his daughter no matter if she was in the wrong. Due to Rhaenyra and the King neglect the hatred of Rhaenyra and the king grows for alicent and criston. When the eye for the eye scene happens in drift mart it further creates the harsh reality that no matter what happens King V will always put Rhaenyra and her kids first before Alicent or her kids. In doing so Alicent kids look upon King V in a different light and in turn Alicent kids look to their mother and in a way Criston as their only source of protection. It is quite clear that Criston has become a father figure to the Green Children and he develop feeling with Alicent throughout the timeline. Any insult or threat to Alicent or her kids he will strike down in a heartbeat because he is no longer protecting a queen and her family, he is now protecting his family. Criston as a character is a hypocrite, judgmental, and has massive anger issues but he is falsely labeled in modern terms as a evil sexist incel man. The term Incel does not apply to criston if anything personal fan favorite Jorah is an incel. Criston is labeled as a sexist by the fandom because he is against the female protagonist who greatly wrong him and continues to be directly or indirectly a danger to the family that Criston is protecting. Criston compared to a lot of characters in the show is more of a grey character than an evil one. Criston as a character is quite complex and fascinating and to me is overly hated within the community when in all reality he has one of the better character arks in house of the dragon.
