I often used to travel by train from Lockerbie through to Edinburgh Waverley via Carstairs or by-passing Carstairs and simply transferring across to the Edinburgh line on my way to Kirkcaldy in Fife. Before rail privatisation it was often a case of trains coming up from down South on the WCML would slow down and pull into Carstairs station where the train would either split in two with the front 2 or 4 carriages going to Glasgow Central via Motherwell and back carriages would then head back out of the station but round onto the branch line to Haymarket and Edinburgh Waverley. Sometimes it was the case that you had to actually get out at Carstairs station and wait on the platform for another train arriving from Glasgow Central to take you to Edinburgh, and Csrstairs station was often unmanned particularly at night and the old stonework that made up the station and the surrounding bridge plus the fact that Carstairs was usually very quiet lent itself to making a rather intimidating atmosphere. I can remember one or two people who had travelled from Lockerbie and had to change at Carstairs and they hated it, said it was a very creepy old station. After rail privatisation it changed a lot, there wasn't the need to stop at Carstairs and of course we saw a lot of the very popular Virgin Trains both on the West Coast mainline services between Glasgow Central and London Euston as well as the Virgin XC services that ran between the South Coast of England and Aberdeen, this was great for my family and me as we could often catch a train straight through from Lockerbie to Kirkcaldy.

Always remember the Motorail which split at Carstairs with the biggest portion going on round to Edinburgh then up to Stirling, Perth and Inverness dropping flats and coaches along the way and the "dragons eggs" mentality of swapping engines so many times and back in the 70's there was that silliness of ScR drivers needing a pilot to operate from the Scottish border to Carlisle... crazy times back then O.o
