The Moment WWE Ruined Money in the Bank
I haven’t made one of these videos in a long time because WWE’s been a lot better compared to 2019. Those were the dark times. With that said though, there is one thing that’s been ruined and that is the Money in the Bank. Last weekend, the WWE made a huge mistake giving Drew McIntyre the Money in the Bank briefcase.
And they made a worse mistake by giving him a failed cash-in on the same night. We’re going to talk about why this was a horrible decision. But before we get there, let’s talk about how Money in the Bank used to be something really special.

Here is a hot take I just thought of. Given the condition that Seth vs Damian main events MITB 2024, what if: Instead of Punk causing Drew to fail his cash-in, when Drew tries to cash-in, Punk blindsides him and hits him with the belt, takes a good look at the belt, steals the case, and runs to the crowd like how he did it in MITB 2011. This becomes an enough distraction for Seth and Damian retains the WHC. After the show, Drew searches for Punk all over the arena but can't find him, he's confronted by Pearce like what happened irl, hits him, and gets suspended. Punk keeps the briefcase hostage, and after some time, Punk dares Drew to put his briefcase on the line at SummerSlam. Because of Drew's arrogance, he accepts the challenge. This way, the MITB is not wasted and is used better as a storyline device.

Well to your point if somebody other than drew wins the money in the bank guess what they ain't gonna cash it in successfully because by the time gunther wins the world title neither him or cody rhodes will lose their respective titles via cash ins, and then money in the bank is not about creating new stars all the time, some times money in the bank is used to enhance the storylines.

You guys don’t see how backwards the logic is. A failed cash in for Drew is valid because it’s used to “further a story” but why can’t that apply for anyone else? Why can’t gable or Jey win, use it to cash in against either Cody or Gunther (in advance or not) if it means setting up another feud and getting them into the world title picture, even if it means losing. We’re okay with Drew failing a cash in right? Why not use that opportunity to give a midcard talent a strong showing against a world champion? I thought that was a cool concept during the open challenge wasn’t it? 😂 Y’all don’t even realize the logic you’re using in defence of Drew works just as much for anyone else lmao.

@@jamiek9780Drew can afford losing MITB. It has no effect on him. If anybody but Drew were to win, they would more than likely lose the cash in. Jey Uso and LA Knight were top picks to win, they are red hot right now. If they were to fail a cash in, all momentum would be instantly squashed. Drew losing had no negative effect on him, and further enhanced the heat on Punk.

100% agree with you. It's almost like people don't understand that there's virtually no chance that either Cody or Gunther (presuming he does indeed become World Champion at Summerslam) lose their respective titles until Wrestlemania 41 or afterwards. So giving anyone else MITB is basically setting them up to hold onto it forever like Priest did, and we don't really need that to happen 2 years in a row. Secondly, when it comes to the CM Punk screwjob, not enough people are pointing out the fact that DM Hunk (I love that nickname) wasn't the only person screwed here. This also completely screws Seth Rollins, since now he can't challenge for the title again until Gunther wins it, and I'm almost positive he's not taking the belt off Gunther unless Seth is the planned WM opponent. And this also reignites the Punk/Rollins feud we were originally supposed to see at Mania before Punk's triceps injury threw those plans off. So now we're going down a timeline where Punk will have to deal with both Drew & Seth wanting revenge, which will inevitably lead to a Triple Threat at some point (possibly even at Summerslam), and that means Punk is fully booked for pretty much the rest of the year now. This is what long-term storytelling is, people. Focusing on the present beefs without forgetting the past.

At least then it gives someone who needs some momentum a story. Have someone other than Drew win, carry it briefly, and cash in in advance against Gunther. Gunther can win but it gives someone a reason to have a world title match and have a good showing. All of that is more valuable than wasting the breifcase on a feud that’s already white hot and didn’t need the extra heat.

Punk could have interfered during Drew’s cash in and cost him the moment before officially cashing in. The distraction could still cause Seth to lose. All the exact same story beats can exist without the contract being wasted. Drew could have cashed in in advance and made Damien vs Gunther a triple threat match. Drew could pin Priest which protects Gunther. Seth could take out Punk earlier in the night. Sets up Punk vs Drew for a world title with Seth ready afterwards. Literally everything could still work out and still protect the value of the MITB, but y’all are cool with an immediate failed cash in that we’ll all forget about in another week.

i am the only one online i think who believes this just expanded the want for the heavyweight title and seth vs punk now has more fuel for that fire. to me the men dont need the briefcase. cody needs more deeper story lines and a briefcase wasnt ganna bring that. the only shame is LA Knight not getting it again. or the crowd reaction for jey. either way raw has more interest tho some fans looking at the wrong sides for this year. let the story build.

Another thing is Money in the bank is months after Wrestlemania and when you have champions like Cody and Priest who won it at the biggest show of the year and for them to just drop it at Mitb not even 100 days into a reign makes the whole story seem pointless and also makes the reign look weak in my opinion, an idea would be to move or swap the ppv timing making it later in the year so if there were a cash in same night atleast the champ being chased in on would have atleast a 100 day plus reign

LA Knight was in the match for the second year in a row and still didn't win. Carmelo Hayes also could/should have won instead and could have customized the briefcase to say "I'm HIM". Jey Uso would have been a bad choice. I'm sorry but I'm also not sorry because he's not a real main eventer like Cody Rhodes, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, or Gunther. Those are all men Jey Uso has been associated with when he's in the main event and he's lost to three of them in championship matches. If that still doesn't convince you then rewatch Raw after Royal Rumble this year, he was facing Bronson Reed an hour and a half after the show started with a whole other hour and a half to go.

Having watched Damien carry the briefcase around for a whole year I'm honestly not bothered by it being cashed in so quickly and Drew failing his cash in definitely adds to the story between him and Punk! I Just hope next year they give to someone like Ilja Draganov, Bron Breakker, Carmelo Hayes or Trick Williams.

i think this argument is silly tbh because what title would a Mr. MITB cash in on that wouldn’t conflict a storyline? The Undisputed title is spoken for by Cody as well as The Rock & Roman so that title isn’t going anywhere outside of that & the World Title is most likely going to Gunther & he ain’t gonna lose it to a cash-in when he gets it neither. it would’ve been a failed cash-in either way as the men’s world & undisputed titles are occupied so unless it’s gonna be cashed in on the Intercontinental, United States, NXT or Tag Team titles, having the men’s MITB would’ve been pointless for now so be happy it was used to build a storyline & not made for someone to job to Cody or Gunther. tldr; stop crying, having a mr. mitb makes no sense as of right now due to ongoing storylines.

I agree with what you said, we don't need every title reign to last YEARS, we need to have title reigns last like 3-4 months, shit gets BORING when you just know the champion is retaining every PPV, like what's the point? i miss the shock factor we used to have. Nah it wasn’t a bad decision just because we didn’t like it doesn’t mean it was bad. Sometimes you need wrestlers to make kayfabe mistakes . Not every mitb winner can be the next world champion. Otherwise that would mean everyone who wins would be world champion and they’d take away the exclusivity of the briefcase and make it too predictable.

I feel like the MITB briefcase hasn’t been special since Seth Rollins in 2014. He was in the authority being pushed hard as the next big star then he cashed in at WrestleMania 31 aka “Heist of the Century” after that MITB has not been able to get to that level

This was the best way to book the briefcase. Last year we had Damian Priest holding the briefcase for almost a year and the women cash in right away. This year we have it the other way around. So it wouldn't get staill because we got annoyed that Priest screwing up his cash in. This also took Drew VS Punk to the next level and relighted the fire between Rollins and Punk. So this was a perfect way to book this years briefcase

I like that Damian got the briefcase and cashed in and won. This years MITB I never saw LA Knight winning it. I thought it was going to be Chad Gable with a unsuccessful cash in because of Wyatt Sicks after months of holding the MITB, which is what I wish they did. I'm fine with Drew losing because it makes Punk a man of his word, and each time Drew loses it makes him that much more unhinged. Drew NEEDS to have his Broken Dreams theme come back. If next week we hear bagpipes when Drew comes out then all of this was pointless.

What about Big E? Money in the Bank helped him with his singles push in winning the WWE Championship. The only downside is that his reign was only 3 months and then he had that career-ending injury.

Drew Mcintyre, winning the MITB briefcase was a right decision. But losing it after cashing in was a wrong decision. Cause now there's no tension in the air cause there's no MITB holder.

The Otis and Theory MITBs (as well as the Corbin and Sandow ones) were all terrible, but I don't mind this one. There's a problem inherent in being forced to have a cash in every year, and they clearly didn't want that problem this year. By clearing the briefcase immediately they avoid the problem this year, while advancing Punk's stories with McIntyre and Rollins (and the huge SS and WM matches Punk will have with each.) It sucks that they botched the MITB so many times in recent years, but I do not mind this one at all.

They could've had Punk prevent the cash in from happening, then challenge McIntyre for the briefcase and fail to take it off him, before McIntyre successfully cashes in and Punk's his first challenger as champion.

Nah I'd still say Damien Sandow's was the worst one. He lost to a one arm Cena even after assaulting him before the match, and he STILL lost and looked incredibly weak. He lost all his credibility after that.

6:50 Sami Zayn said in an interview that the one thing that kind of sucks about Triple H's booking is that if you're not in his long-term plans, you'll be on the sidelines indefinitely. He has certain guys his focused on for a certain period of time and nobody else. And that's been the case with LA Knight, unfortunately.

The MITB isn’t needed this year. All their major stars are on story lines and the MITB would only mess them up. It’s actually a nice problem to have.

I think WWE should not book Money in the bank match every year. If they want to keep the PLE each year. I have a suggestion, schedule Men's MITB match one year and women's MITB match the next year. This way we won't see two ladder matches on the same night. WWE can let their champions have longer reigns without worrying about what to do in situations like Austin Theory- Roman Reigns.

I'm not even a minute in so I don't know if this point would be brought up, but modern day WWE is making champions get long runs, and even Señor MitB also had a long run. We don't need another 1-year MitB run, or a MitB run inside the year at that. This was a good decision; not the best decision, but still good.

After living through the PG era, I won’t complain about tiny things like these. It wasn’t the best decision but it wasn’t Fiend or KO losing to Goldberg levels of bad. This wasn’t even close to being the worst cash in. Theory cashed in on a midcard title only to lose. Sandow lost to a one armed John Cena, Corbin lost to Mahal in seconds (that one was really bad), Cena and Strowman announced their cash ins and lost in a no contest I mean this one is far from being the worst.
