Just to get ahead of those who'll rightly point it out, the heads and backpacks on the space marines are interchangeable, with a bit of cutting and filing here and there as they have stems or pegs on them. Still, I wouldn't be so quick to call that 'customisable'. In any case, I'm not a fan of the mono-pose, but it's being touted as a way of making the products cheaper. It's not. if every model has the same joints that's cheaper because you don't have to fiddle with every model's unique proportions, if anything I would argue that the mono-pose miniatures are just as complicated to sculpt as the joints have to be far more precise.

For me mono kills the creativity in a creative hobby, I got shot down for mentioning this somewhere else also. At least the Chaos side aren't repeated and mono like the Primaris...that's lazy for me. Great video dude.

If you're so good at converting models that even a mono-pose model is no concern to you, then aren't you the type of person who has the skills to convert anything to look like anything? As in, why buy expensive new models at all when you can just convert cheap older ones so they look like newer models? Do you even need to buy GamesWorkshop models to begin with? Why not buy from a 3rd party source that looks similar for a lot cheaper and convert it so it looks like 40k? Hell, why not buy some 5 buck plastic tanks from your local reject shop and convert them into predator tanks? I'm saying this because this is literally what I do. I can't afford no fancy possessed or shiny new chosen. Instead, I buy the cheapest generic units I can find and convert them into all sorts of elites and champions. I don't need to buy new models because I can make my own new models from old models. The people who are saying "just convert the new models" are the people who don't need to buy new models. So in other words, the people telling you to be happy with what you're given are the people who don't need to be given anything. (Let them eat cake, amirite?) Also, fuck mono-pose. It's fine for special characters, but I want my units to each have their own pose so they each look like their own unique character with their own unique personality. Not a bunch of copy/paste robots off the assembly line. I want MY army to feel like MY army.

my biggest gripe is that there is no need for new Primaris but there is a gigantic, disproportionate need for new Chaos. They should have just done 100% Chaos and 0% Primaris, for now at least. Maybe update a Chaos Tank and put out some new Chosen or Havocs or something. I actually really do like the way the masks on the new Shadow tip or whatever Primaris look but why waste time rereleasing what are essentially redone Reivers? Snort some Adderal and FOCUS GW. Come On!

But now when GW doesn't really produce multi pose stuff any longer its the best thing ever!

Yeah I was super bummed out that half of the marines had chain swords and bolt pistols. But don't they always make models in boxsets monopose? Oh and obliterators got a rules change (there was a rule leak) and they can be taken in squads of 1 and 2. But I am still pissed off with this boxset. Wont be buying it.

Macca on 2 gun options for a 'customisable' model "woahhh stop blowing me away with all the customisation" real tears of laughter and equal pain. The Sisters of Silence box is literally 5 monoposes with 3 weapon options, and 3 of the gun monoposes are virtually identical thanks to their unique sculpting of the joints and cape and shoulder pads, as are two of the sword ones, meaning I'm already struggling on my second box to come up with ways to make the models look different. Guess I'll be buying that FW bolt pistol upgrade set

They make their starter sets accessible to new players and they make the boxes you get later more multi-part/multipose/customization. Like the box sets for Plague Marines and Intercessors are different than the Dark Imperium equivalent units. I'll forgive you for not seeing the new Obliterator datasheet leak because it is a leak, but you can now take them in units of one because they changed the unit. So 2 is enough to field a unit, you just don't get the max.

I never understood the point in making all these "snap-fit" models. They don't fit together properly and even if they did, who buys a starter set of 40k and cant afford some poly cement?

To be fair the obliterater virus can effect anything and make them into oblits, not just marines. That being said I think the termi armour turned walking gunline looks better. I would love to see a Tartaros pattern Oblit, or my favorite, Saturnine.

This box being snap-fit doesn't make any sense, the unit composition doesn't make any sense either and the daemon engine sharing its sprues with the units is a baffling choice to me. I was ready to buy the chaos half of the box and now I'll just wait til they make actual kits to do so. Sad because I do like the minis for once.

This makes sense. I think snap fit is kinda lame, and this half cqc/half ranged is pretty lame too. And regular kits are CONSIDERABLY easier to convert.

What annoys me other than the mono-posing is the units, chaos has mostly melee built with one having a plasma gun and the other having an auto cannon while the Primaris got a bunch of long-range weapons such as the admittedly cool looking suppressors and those snipers. They always make the Primaris fucking OP as hell and just shit on CSM

For me the new primaris stuff drifts too far into generic sci-fi territory. They no longer feel like medieval gothic warriors in space.

take the new greater possessed, and an aspiring champion, some green stuff, and if you can some daemon or beastmen stuff and you've got a real winner. atleast i think so.

It should be straightforward enough to design models that can be equipped with either two hands holding a bolter, or a hand holding a bolt pistol and a hand holding a chainsword. They might be a bit more constrained in their poses than is currently popular, but it could be done.

I actually quite like the sorcerer dude, but I think you're totally on point with the Obliterators and Greater Possessed. As I've said on Facebook the only thing I can think of doing with the, quite frankly, stupid decision to go 50/50 with the CSMs is to swap the heads of the ccws and source Khorne bezerker or AoS helmets. Hopefully the bling on the Primaris captain's cloak can be removed. IF I were to collect the vanguard models (which I presently despise) I'd go the whole hog and paint them in camouflage with a few darkened shades of Khorne red for my Flesh Tearers. Having said that, it's hard enough justifying the inclusion of Primaris into that chapter as it is!

in a country like mine where these things already cost a mutated arm and a leg, a lot of chaos brethren passed on this box. We all know better boxes will come out with all sorts of options. Death Guard releases were really educational. You end up paying more, true, but it hurts more to be locked out of vital options later on, because it feels like you got ripped off.

I feel dumb now since right before this, I got the old Start Collecting Chaos Space Marines box and the old sculpts for the faction. Not sure what to do now. I like both.

The Chaos Marines look alot like the Chosen from one of the other box sets, Dark Vengeance. I like that they took the ideas from them and put that to these, but i also kinda feel like they are really lazy. Check out the Chosen with the single horn, thats the first thing i noticed being exactly the same. Go, look. :)

I dont mind these starting boxes having monopose models. But I do hope that when they release new chaos space marine that it will be multipart kit. I own a box of the new plague marines and it has nice amount of different heads, weapons and small stuff but the poses are always the same.

My idea for the CSM squad is to use them as Chosen. This way they can use both Bolters and Chainswords on the same models. They also get +1 attack for being a "Veteran". Makes since too with Abaddon wanting his elite body guard.

While I agree it's silly with all the people saying how "easy" it is to customize these models, I'm a bit confused by all the outcries against the mono-pose models. From when they announced this to all the teasers, it felt like this was going to be the next "Dark Imperium" style box. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw similar smaller boxes like the "Know No Fear" set, as well as some other Easy-To-Build kits like the Redemptor Dreadnought and Blight-hauler. Then later this year we'll get the full kits for the new CSM and Primaris. I agree on the left Greater Possessed, reminds me of the Death Guard which had too many little details slammed on top of each other for me. Although, I am bummed there's no actual close-combat unit for the Primaris in this set. Hopefully it comes along like how the Reivers came after Dark Imperium. We'll see.

3 minutes in and seeing those comments and I’m already mad. I like chaos, I’m buying an army of them. Daemons, chaos space marines, and everything else. I like chaos because I find the models interesting. Monopose hampers the creativity that should come with making a chaos army. It makes the painting boring when everything starts to look them same after a certain number of models are used.

I'd probably have gone with more form-fitting single-piece greaves for Phobos armour, like a utilitarian version of the ones Dante wears, or even sci-fi Stormcast legs. I get that they were going for a stripped-down armour look, but the layering around the upper shins and ankles just makes them look bird-legged.

"The models are customizeable" I mean, yeah, sure, with enough effort... but, speaking as someone who heavily converted a full squad of 10 dark vengeance chosen, that is no small task. It took me months of hobby work to get my chosen in order - sawing off arms, hollowing out shoulder pads & removing heads with a dremel, making press mold duplicates of the distinctive shoulder pads, stealing parts from multiple other bits, etc. Converting these kinds of high detail monopose models is a lot of work, well beyond the experience of new hobbyists of the sort these starter boxes are presumably meant to attract. Now, don't get me wrong, I like the kit overall, I like these new models aesthetically and being single pose doesn't completely sour my opinion (though I can certainly understand those who feel more strongly about it than I). But proper multipart models would have been better, and saying you can just convert these is at best underestimating the amount of work that would take and at most is just completely disingenuous. Otherwise, it's probably been mentioned by others, but obliterators are unit size 1-3 now instead of just 3, so the two oblits in this box are perfectly valid as two units of one or one of two.

Quick note on obliterators, they lowered the minimum unit size to 2, so that isn't an issue, not defending any shady shit, but the have lowererd the unit size. Not sure why tho, maybe couldn't be assed making threee monopose designs so they copped out at 2, who knows.

These are weird complaints for what is essentially a dual starter kit. What’s wrong with liking these sculpts and then just building off of it. I’m buying this because I love the sculpts and can’t wait to paint them.

my girlfriend bought me the new genestealer-cult motorbike assassin for my birthday (£22.50). when i took the single sprew out of the box she was like 'wtf, thats all you get'. then she lied and told me it cost her £5.00, proborbly because she was embararassed at being ripped off. to be fair, i like the model a lot and i dont even collect genestealer-cultists; but i'd never have bought it for £22.50.

The customisable problem you talk about here with the box set isnt a problem they cleared this up on the community page the heads are all interchangeable and the back packs and torsoes are all interchangeable baring the guy with the heavy auto cannon

A little late but converting these guys into finecrap noise marines was such a fucking nightmare I still haven't gotten all of them built. A year later. The fact that the start collecting is monopose too seriously sucks.

To be fair, with this box set you most likely do get these models at a huge discount compared to buying each unit individually, and thats why I would defend them being snapfit. That said, I think making the chaos space marines a 50 / 50 mix of shooting and close combat was a mistake. As you said, its not an effective unit in any way. If you sit them back and shoot only half of them will be able to do anything, and if you rush them forward to get into close combat, again, only half will be effective. At the very least exchange the autocannon dude for another special weapon, like say a flamer.

Talking about customisation: RIP Crimson Fists upgrades sprues going away after the chapter being featured in the first white dwarf of the year.

Nothing wrong with monopose. There are some great monopose from CMON and Arkhon studios. But I can remember when customising was me cutting, repositioning and pinning the arms and legs of metal minis. Based on this, what they call now customisation I call decoration. Sad how times change. So much PC newspeak. But bottom line is still money talks and BS walks. Good minis will always sell.

Im hoping the oblits will look better if painted all in metals with a bit of blended flesh here and there.

I'd love cheap, coloured plastic monopose to exist alongside the highly customisable hobbyist range. Some people just want to get in and play the game

3:00 i don't mind the monoposed models for sets like this as they are supposed to be "easy to build" and they do go together well. But when actual kits come out, people still complain about the poses. Yes you can't build them the old way but you get a range of different poses rather than the same squat pose of every old marine model. Yes the poses repeat but you can modify the parts such as heads, weapons and such to still make them look different and the plague marine kit is the biggest example of this. That is customisation within the kit you buy and kitbashing isn't needed because they can be individualised really well imo. the rubric marine kit also has set is a bit old schoolish besides the legs looking slightly different to each other but they are all samey which suits the army.

At around 8:00 you critiqued that the Obliterators number 2 when the squad size is 3. The Obliterators in this box have a whole new datasheet, with completely different stats. These models don't come in squads of 3.

There are too many hornless helmets in this box. I don't want to build an army of baldies.

This same thing could be said about the things about rearming the units could be said of the chaos warriors you need to buy grate weapons or halberd separately so to get a 30 man unit of warriors with halberds you need to spend an extra $45 on top of the price of the warriors.

I think the problem with obliterators is how tiny their head is in proportion to the whole model. I imagine them looking very good if the head was around 1.5 times bigger.

GW stated that you can play Obliterators in squads of two now though.

The big swathes of flesh with the occasional piece of machinery showing looks silly, in contrast look at the Venomcrawler thing its spare pieces of flesh make it creepy and cool looking.

It’s weird to compare the warhammer side of the tabletop community to the Hail Caesar/historical side of the hobby. On the warhammer side we seem to have some sort of Stockholm syndrome, asking the boot on are neck to press down a little bit harder, whereas with a game like Hail Caesar it’s less about brand loyalty and more about creating the best results, mixing and matching ranges to your hearts content

beats me why they did em that way. They could have at least gone with loadouts that let you split them to be 2 five man squads with one bolter one chainsword but no they give you one too many chainsword guys and csm are already a waist of points in anything but the most friendly kitchen table game.

I feel like gw can do whatever they want and ppl will still suck vigorously on their teats. I mean they already do that with the pricing; you hit it on the head with the cost difference between mono and multi models. When I can buy an awesome PG gunpla for less than 10 tiny little models,, that’s kind of redic.

I'm fine with the squads honestly. They are a legal loadout, its not optimal but that can be an exercise in nitpicking and semantics which helps no one. You might complain that 'I want a heavy bolter, not an Autocannon' etc. The easy to build thing is a choice, they want these boxes to be easy for people to build them, they want these to be introductory boxes and that's fine. At least its legal units unlike the Soul Wars AoS box set which had bizzare situations where you got 4 of a unit which had a min size of 10 and other weird situations. And I feel like a lot of your complaints regarding the community article is just petty. Most of the time the guys writing these things don't know anymore more than we do, and they worded something in a slightly ambiguous way. Its the end of the world!
