i am not a pattern writer but it is easier for me to read the directions sometimes so i wrote down what would help me along with the video: granny square for tote bag #1: make a slipknot ch 3 slst in first chain ch 2 in the center, dc 15 (15) slst and ch 1 to close off the round and cut yarn. pull yarn and close circle, weave in the end row two add new color ch 2 yo, insert in same ch space, pull up a loop until you have 7 loops on your hook yo and pull through your 7 loops ch 1 repeat for the rest of the row you should have 16 little puffy bulb things now slst and ch 1, cut yarn row three add new color in chain space ch 2 yo, insert in same ch space, pull through 2 repeat until you have 5 loops on hook ch 2 repeat until end of row slst, ch 1, cut yarn you should have another 16 puffy bulbs here now row four add new color ch 3 ___ make 3 trst (ch 3 counts as 1 trst for the first ch space) make 3 dc in next space make 3 hdc in next space make 3 dc again in next space make 3 trst in next space ch 2 repeat from step ___ until the end of the row slst and ch 1, cut yarn

I just made the first tote bag! I connected the squares differently (i just sewed them to make them look smooth), though; i just felt like doing it that way. I will probably do your way if I do another granny square tote bag though. I did two types of squares. square A had a dark green center and border, with white and dark brown in between. square B had a pinky red center/border with with and light brown in between. I used white for the top and the red for the straps. I literally love it so much, it feels so christmas-y!

sorry if i misunderstood and this is what you were doing but another way to change the color is to use the other color for the last yarn over of a stitch. for example if it was a sc then you would yarn over with the normal yarn the first time and pull it through your work, then yarn over with the new color and pull it through the two loops to finish off the stitch
