I wonder at the names of these stitches sometimes, because this is linear "corner to corner", and I don't really see tulips anywhere. Love that steely - blue - gray or gunmetal blue colored yarn you have there. What is it?

I would try chain 3 single crochet all the way across.

Yes, it can be done. When you're starting a new row, ch 3 instead of 4, turn, 2 dc into the last sc of the row you just completed, sc into the 3-chain loop. Then, continue on with the tulip stitch.

Beautiful yarn and stitch. But why would you give this stitch pattern a new name, when it's been called block stitch, crazy stitch, or brick stitch for decades, and it's the one commonly used for the C2C blankets that have become so popular. It's just confusing to use new names.

Charles Voth apparently creative grandma has been calling it the tulip stitch too (got at least a couple years) since she's got a tutorial by the same name. I've never heard this called the tulip stitch, till now. I've only heard it called the block stitch.

Well, I did a search on "crochet block stitch" and the pattern didn't look the same as the tulip stitch at all. Maybe, that was one of the reason this stitch had a name changed. There are too many different stitch patterns with the same name. As for the C2C stitch, it is crocheted at an angle rather in a long row like the tulip stitch. It is ideally for projects such as making a triangular shawl; although, the C2C stitch can be crocheted into a square or rectangular shape as well. So, even if the stitch looks the same, the slight difference/s on how the stitch is created ended up in having a different name. This is very helpful for someone that is looking for a certain stitch to create a certain project.
