I think this would work out just fine, Thanks for your question.

The ch 1 sets up the first sc so it is a squared up stitch and therefore easier to slip stitch into to finish the round. I agree this combination can seem akward at the beginning of a round. I have changed this up in newer patterns to just start with a single sc in the corner and then I finish the round with a single crochet, ch 2, sl st in first sc. this seems to sit better. But that is the purpose of the ch 1 before the sc, so that the stitch will sit square. I do encourage you to experiment and do what works for you. thanks for watching.

The white is Parchment / Bernat Premium, the Grey is Pale Grey / Impeccable by Loops and Threads and the Blue is Arctic / Crafts Smart Value / Loops and Threads

For this single square they don't usually take more than 30g of yarn total to make one. I agree sometimes it is good to watch without sound when others are around. The written pattern is on my blog for free and you can follow along with that with the video sound turned off. To slow it down go into the video settings and choose playback speed and choose .75 or .5 to slow down the video. KZfaq will remember this setting though so you will have to change it again if you want to watch other videos at regular speed. Hope this makes it easier for you to follow along. Enjoy
