Tropical Plant Party

Күн бұрын

Happy fern friday! In this week's video I have picked up a few Crocodile Ferns to have a plant chat with. The Crocodile fern, proper name being, Microsorum musifolium is a true tropical fern that loves moisture, warmth and grows primarily as an epiphyte in it's natural habitat. Growing Crocodile ferns indoors is not terribly difficult as long as they get some filtered light, humidity and aren't allowed to dry out completely. When thinking about how to grow Crocodile ferns, it is important to look at where they come from and thrive. Crocofile fern care will be easiest with a nice humid location in a brightly lit room, such as bathroom or kitchen. Really they can take some drier air as long as they are lcoated where things are drafty, but it is not ideal for optimal growth and appearance. When grown indoors as a houseplant the Crocodile fern is typically a very slow grower, so giving the houseplant the optimal growing conditions will help speed along the plant's already slow growth. These ferns grow much more quickly when grown outdoors. Propagating Crocodile ferns is very easy, just divide the offsets and repot them into a well-drained and organically rich potting soil and do not allow to dry out for several weeks. Dividing crocodile ferns is the best and fastest way to propagate the plants and increase your plant collection. The Microsorum musifolium does not have many pest to worry about, but it is always best to watch out for Mealybugs and Scale on ferns. When troubleshooting plant problems keep in mind the variables: location, light, water, and how long it takes the soil to dry out. Yellowing leaves often means too much water. Browning usually means not enough water or very dry air. Spotting and discoloration is generally indicative of a nutrient deficiency, fungus, bacteria or virus.

The cicadas make it sound like you're in the Amazon.... totally fitting. As for the slow-mo, water splashing, leaves-a-swaying shot. Well, that's just straight up plant porn. Great vid as usual.

@@TropicalPlantParty oh definitely, loving the foliage on this fern. hoping I can keep this one alive, I've had maidenhair ferns before and they're just so demanding with the humidity and living in the part of England that I live in its not easily achieved, so I'm giving ferns another go and I'm so glad I discovered the crocodile fern.

This is super interesting! I've had a completely different experience with my Croco. I've had it for two years and in the winter months the air humidity dips to about 20-30% Rh (about 19C or 66F indoors) and my croc does fine. I never spray it with water and I water it maybe once a week in the winter time. It has grown from a 10cm/ 4inch plant into a 80cm/ 31inch plant. Although I have a LOT of plants near it, so maybe it's got a microclimate going on. Never thought of measuring the Rh around that spot. Anyway the point is, in my experience as an avid fern killer (I just water them too little) this is an easy fern to have indoors, in the far Northern Europe.

Hi Jeff, love the crocodile fern it's leaves are so cool looking. I will enjoy these on your channel, I live in too dry of an environment to grow this in my home, Love your humor as always, always need my smile and laughs for the day. Those crazy birds are so noisy, I have another KZfaqr that has the same birds in her background noise, I have so many crazy critters around me that I don't need that noise added in. Okay now you have convinced me that maybe I could try growing one of the smaller versions of this adorable plant, I have the window, and I have the humidifier, and I can mist it since I have other plants that I mist. Thanks so much Jeff for all this great information you have made me braver on this plant. Have a great day and I will see you soon, bye for now.

Hi holly! They really aren't that demanding as long as they are watered regularly. Mine don't seem to mind the drier air indoors as long as their soil isn't let to dry out. ... during the summer anyway, winter is much more dry.

I love fern Friday and am starting to get the nerve to maybe try again to have a little fern friend. But this next part is totally random, I just needed to ask ppl in the plant community. Ok so I needed to go to the laundry mat last week and my bf works overnight so when he has days off we stick to his same schedule. But anyway at this laundry mat and it’s the first time we’ve been there because we needed to find a 24 hour one right. I walk in and they have the most plants I’ve ever seen in a laundry mat in my life! And you know how I feel about my spider plants 💕💖 OMG! All of theirs had babies on top of babies..... and Dan (my bf) looks at me and says “don’t do it!” Lol 😂 he already knew I was going to be going home with kidnapped spider babies in my bag..... So question of the day: Does this make me a bad person because I pinched ( literally) 4 spider babies out of at least 25 that are still there and look like they are going to die on the plants?
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 5 жыл бұрын
🤣 i get this question a lot! I don't think it makes you a "bad person" that seems harsh for taking plant babies. I always say, if it is not yours, then don't take without permission.

Just found your video to help me with my crocodile fern. I transferred my fern to an African Violet mix and it seems to be doing well. I also ordered this one from e-bay, but when I received it, it was in pretty bad shape and half of the leaves had dark brown spots on the sides, but it has bounced back well. Many of the leaves are over 16" long now! I will follow your guidelines so it can thrive even more. Thank you again!

Finally a fern that I actually I have. I only have a crocodile fern and staghorn. Everything else just scares me. I use fish emulsion fertilizer on mine and it seems to like it. It does stink thought. Do these like to be root bound or do they prefer more room in a bigger pot that holds more water?

I remember mine always doing better when it got repotted, so I would say giving the roots some more room is better. That's probably just because it makes it easier to keep them hydrated though.

Yes, Java Fern can be grown submerged or emerged. Surprisingly, the foliage isn't all that different between the two, unlike some others. I wouldn't be surprised if it was possible to grow Crocodile as an aquatic (all of the foliage would rot off and have to regrow) as well.

The leaves of my plant are going darker around the edges (kinda spotted dark) and a few really light leaves like almost white and not very green. I haven't been misting it very much so I will do that more often. But is there anything else I can do to stop this from happening?
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! Are the black spots/edges soft or hard? If they are hard and crispy, then increasing the humidity is a good idea, and perhaps even decreasing the light. Sometimes those edges in combination with light colored new growth is an indicator that the plant is getting too much light. Unfortunately both of those things can be caused by a lot of different things, like too much or too little water, dry air, lack of nutrients, excess nutrients... sorry, diagnosing discolored foliage is a difficult thing to do. Starting with upping the humidity is a good place to start though.
