It was Crosby Stills & Nash when they recorded their 1st LP. Neil Young joined the band just before they played at Woodstock. You didn’t see him in the movie, because Neil refused to be filmed. So they cropped him out of the shots, but you can hear him announced at the start of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. Stills & Young played together in Buffalo Springfield, & they liked jamming on their guitars. One of the great groups of the era. ✌️❤️🎶

Young had some odd proclivities through the years. My uncle was in a couple of management positions in the 60’s thru 80’s, and said that Young made Lou Reed seem like a squared away everyman.

@@davidwilkins5932 You could tell Young was an outlier. I saw them in '73 on their "we're not just getting together to do a ripoff tour" tour and Young traveled separately from the other guys. It seemed Stills & Young were 2 huge egos, David was just self destructive and Graham Nash was a gentleman. Imo.

I've always loved the contrast of Stills playing style versus Neil's playing style. When they play together, Stills will play a little nastier, and Young will play a little cleaner than he usually does.

Steven Stills definitely was the leader of the group. Neil Young benefitted from this chapter of his musical evolution. Always building his material on where he's been to shift to something new. The foundation he got here meant everything.

There were CSN and CSNY Neil Young joined later and also left earlier to do his own thing again. There’s a soap opera to be written about these 4 dudes and their work together. Stills and Young were in Buffalo Springfield (For What it’s Worth is their signature tune. PLEASE check it out) and Crosby was in the Byrds, Nash in the Hollies. There’s so many branches from this collaboration. Love to see more exploration from you guys of them.

CSN is awesome and known for harmonies and the silky voice and excellent strumming of Stephen Stills. Add in Neil Young's songs, his rock edge and distinctive voice, and the inspired guitar back and forth with Stills, and awesome gets more awesome. Neil Young came and went from the group - he'd show up and stay as long as he could stand it then leave again - he's more of a lone wolf musically.

Ned from Spain again with a bit of info for you guys. About the 4 main guys, David Crosby was in the Byrds, Stills and Young were in Buffalo Springfield and Nash was in the UK hit makers The Hollies. They were all superb musicians but Nash was the harmony master. The rhythm section was the great but underappreciated Dallas Taylor on drums and a very young Greg Reeves on bass. This was a highly influential album and sold 7,000,000 units in the US alone. Compare the harmony work with groups like Yes, Kansas, Boston, America and Queen. Thanks guys this album has a lot of treasures for you to discover.

You can usually tell when Young is playing with them because the rock songs actually rock. I can't remember if you've done Woodstock or not, but his blistering lead guitar is what makes that song really go. And he was pissed because they had a harder, more rough edged take than the one they released that he liked better. That was a constant source of conflict among them...Neil wanted everything raw, ragged and emotional. The others wanted to polish everything to a pristine sheen.

CSNY was the first concert I ever saw. First hour was acoustic with a lot of 3 and 4 part harmony. After intermission it was electric, with Stills and Young’s dueling guitars built upon a solid drum/bass rhythm, Crosby’s rhythm guitar, and Nash’s organ, highlighted by their 4 part harmony. Still probably the best concert I ever saw. In the late 60s Crosby was in the Byrds, Nash was in the Hollies, Stills and Young were in Buffalo Springfield. David, Graham and Steven met at Mama Cass’s house in Laurel Canyon and they knew instantly their combined voices was something special. CSN made many records and toured for decades. Good music. Neil brought the “ooomph” and then their music soared!

On the first Crosby, Stills, and Nash album, Steve Stills sang, played acoustic and electric guitar and keyboards. There was no way they could play much of this material live, because Stills could only play one instrument at a time, so they got Neil Young, who had played guitar and sung with Stills before in the group Buffalo Springfield. He joined during the recording of this album, but didn't play on this song. Stills played both organ an lead guitar on this song. There are tapes of him playing bass while jamming with Hendrix, so I guess that's where his inspiration for using a wah wah came from. Neil Young's lead guitar did add a rock edge to the song "Woodstock" though, and Young also had separate albums under his own name.

CSN&Y will always be my favorite group, all of them are also great soloists; if I remember correctly Neil Young played on their Deja Vu and 4 Way Street album (great live album)

Their first album (CSN) & their Deja Vu album (CSNY) are both worth a look.

Their Deja Vu album is a must! Never got see them in concert but l did see Neil Young by himself and Stephen Still at The Roxy years after they had broken up but l sure wish l could have seen them all together 🤟🎵
