You're watching the official music video for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - "Teach Your Children" written by Graham Nash. Originally released on the 1970 CSNY studio album "Deja Vu", "Teach Your Children" is featured on a 2018 Graham Nash career retrospective entitled "Over The Years..." Get a copy here
The video is a collaboration between Graham Nash and celebrated filmmaker and animator Jeff Scher.
The imagery frames the youth-led liberal activism of 2018 against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement and Peace demonstrations of the 1960's, providing a powerful visual aid to Graham Nash's relevant-as-ever appeal to teach not only our children but also our parents well.
“I wrote Teach Your Children because we have much to teach them. Conversely, I believe we as parents have much to learn from them as well. I think that Jeff Scher did a wonderful job of animating my lyrics and positioning the song in a contemporary setting." - Graham Nash (2018)

This was the anthem of a generation, who felt we could make the world a better place. Sadly, we ended up going backward instead of forward. The dreamers became teachers and musicians. The greedy and ignorant became politicians.

I grew up listening to Crosby, Stills, Nash and young. I am honored to say I David Crosby preform 3 different times in different stages of my life. I am 69 now and at the red rocks amphitheater in Colorado on a beautiful fall night, David stepped to the front of the stage while Stills was playing his solo part of a song. He stood there overlooking the crowd like a proud approving elder, his long beautiful freak flag of hair still blowing in the wind and his stern mustached smile beaming out at us! I remember thinking to myself - thank you David - thank God for you and the guys! What an era of music and struggles! An entire generation loves you and there he stood like master of us all gladly following his storied life. I am truly grateful and sadden on this day. Thanks for the memories! You tried to change the world. Someday the world will listen and change for the betterment of mankind. May it be tomorrow. Goodbye David Crosby - fare thee well.

Very nice words - thank you! I feel the same way and I'm still proud today that our "little" band in East Germany (former GDR), which was called the most American band in the Erzgebirge, played this song. It was a beautiful time as far as music was concerned and I still love these songs as much as I did back then.

@user-fi3hc8fy8p I agree. As wisely as possible for your age. In my post, I was thinking back to all of the conversations I've had with my (now adult) son. He has always known that he has been able to be open and honest about his life. And his reflections on some of the most significant forks in the road for him did indeed make me cry. The innocence of youth for most of us.

God speaks to me in various ways. Sometimes it's audible and that's when I need specific information or instructions. Sometimes He asks ME questions, and sometimes He brings a song repeatedly to me. This is the song. The words "And know they love you" is what has struck me in the heart. I think both my grandson (who I say I am raising, but he is really raising me!) and I need to be reminded that we actually love each other. I am teaching him to walk in my footsteps by example, not just words. BUT I am also teaching him (audibly) to NOT walk in my footsteps in all the areas where I tripped and fell. He's listening.

My ten year older brother bought Déjà Vu right when it came out in The Netherlands in March 1970. As a ten year old I heard him play this album ad infinitum and thus it became my wayfarer for the past 53 years. But only now that my 21 and 20 year old daughters have left the house to go study across the ocean, after gaining adulthood in the universally known painful process of attaining their independence from us, do I not only understand, but also undergo the full force of this Song of Songs. The unbroken circle of life as described in Genesis with first Eve then Adam attaining consciousness, realizing their mortality and self-conscious of their nakedness they flee home to fend for themselves, leaving their bewildered father behind who gave them said consciousness and self-determination. No original sin there, just leaving home, just empty nest…

Remembering 1992 your ramblings in response to someone who witnessed a historical American point in time are full of nothing but speculation and contempt. You’re showing your true colors by not only dismissing a turning point on their life as “bullshit”, but insulting them “personally” without knowing anything about them. Extremely common and typical of the current regime of trump cultists; “insult what you don’t understand; only because the attempt to understand is far too mentally challenging”

Remembering 1992 Let it be known that I hold no contempt for you whatsoever. I feel sorry for the fact that you see others as brainwashed, as I felt that way for a long time. Only reading liberal new sources isn’t good for the psyche, and the same is true for only reading breitbart and fox news. Since, I have begun reading al jazeera, reuters, and pbs newshour, as well as cnn, fox, msnbc, and most other sources I can find with articles about recent happenings. Obviously, nothing should ever be trusted outright unless it can be seen with your own eyes, or proved veritable with public information. Things such as the curvature of the earth, the efficacy of vaccinations, and the existence of covid-19 can all be proven with either the naked eye, very simple instruments and calculations, or publicly available information from countries on every continent, in every language. I am sure that at some point in your life, you will look back, and you will realize that you were within your right to have your own opinions, but not to discredit the painful experiences of others. I wish you luck.

Having my first child today brought me here!! Even in this weird world we find ourselves in there is still lots and lots of joy out there, this is the very best day of my life and have a feeling that it always will.. If you start to forget that think of my baby Brittany... I have a family and have never been happier in my life than today. :-) Even in very dark times the world still turns, the sun still rises, and it might be some time but better days are ahead up there, too.

Brittany is being born into an awakening world where our old conditionings and fears are being shed, but needing to be exposed first - as what is shown in the video. Her future with parents like you will show her the beauty and harmony that is possible for humanity's future. We are in a process of awakening and needing to remember to live from our Essence-Hearts that know and live from Love, Tolerance, patience and forgiveness, and respect for all living things. Blessings to you and baby Brittany.

"Teach Your Children" You, who are on the road, Must have a code That you can live by. And so become yourself Because the past is just a goodbye. Teach your children well. Their father's hell Did slowly go by. And feed them on your dreams. The one they pick's the one you'll know by. Don't you ever ask them, "Why?" If they told you, you would cry. So, just look at them and sigh, And know they love you. [Verse in the background:] Can you hear and do you care And can't you see We must be free To teach your children What you believe in, Make a world that we can live in? And you, of tender years, Can't know the fears That your elders grew by. And so please help them with your youth. They seek the truth Before they can die. Teach your parents well. Their children's hell Will slowly go by. And feed them on your dreams. The one they pick's the one you'll know by. Don't you ever ask them, "Why?" If they told you, you would cry. So, just look at them and sigh And know they love you.

One of Graham Nash's greatest songs at the very least, and perhaps his greatest. The harmonies are ethereal, the arrangement seemingly perfect (Jerry Garcia on pedal steel), and the sensibility is sky-high. Masterpiece, by any measure. CS&N were magical!

Now I am 63, and still sing it, at home or driving in the car, always thinking and wishing, that there should always be the best love you can bring up in raising your children. Wow, now I am sad, that David Crosby has left this earth. I so hope to meet with all those wonderfull musicians, CSNY, Joni Mitchel and more in heaven.....🕊🙏

@@szzk7937 Hi, I've got no problem with the actual lyrics of the song, that's why I loved it back in '70! Good message, right! Now, with this new video artwork, I'm going, WHAT?? At 1:48 Black Lives Matter is presented. Are you familiar with this organization? They spent last summer burning and looting our cities, destroying SMALL BUSINESSES, many of them BLACK-OWNED. They preach that white folks are incurably racist-- evil. They DESTROY THE MESSAGE OF DR. KING. Their lies are now the official curriculum in our public schools. They are the OPPOSITE of what I taught my kids: namely TOLERANCE FOR ALL. The video is racist propaganda. BTW, Trump, who is demonized here at 2:00, ELEVATED Blacks, who enjoyed a higher standard of living under his leadership. More black-owned businesses. --Tim

@@timmorgan9483 - Lay off the right wing media. Black Lives Matter is a very loosely-organized, worldwide movement to promote positive policing and criminal justice reform and social equality. There isn't a central leadership with any specific goals, let alone the nefarious ones that you alleged. If you want to use the genetic fallacy to condemn the movement based upon the ideologies of some of the founders, then why not do the same to the U.S. and virtually all of its institutions based upon the racism, sexism, classism, etc. of the Founding Fathers and most of the influential people from the subsequent 200 years?
