When you’re looking for something fun to do, turning to a Tamiya model is a great way to spend your time, building, being creative and really enjoying a hobby. There are certainly plenty of RC models to choose from in the Tamiya line-up and although there are plenty of new kits, we wanted to show you a kit that has been around for a bit and is still a great model to have fun with. The Tamiya Land Rover Defender 90 is based on their CC-01 chassis and this 4x4 off-road capable truck is just perfect for looking scale and exploring those dirt paths at your local park. It’s a build up kit that includes a speed control, motor and even LED lights. You’ll need a few more items to finish it up, and you’ll need plenty of free time to build the chassis and detail the body. But when you’re done, you’re left with a simple RC truck that will be a lot of fun to drive around.

Very cool vid. I have this car also and fixed the two things you mentioned. Can you also give some advice about the steering? It is a bit sloppy with different steering angles. is a aluminium steering upgrade enough?

You definitely can crawl with these once modified, may not be super competitive but crawl mine and does well. However I've spent more than the kits cost on upgrades.

I like the Tamiya CC-01truck kit. It is easy to build. If you use it as trail rig, then it is cool. It is not a crawler. It does work better with ball bearings. Also the steering set-up is terrible. Too much slop. What is really good about this kit is that there are a lot of after market parts. You can improve the steering set-up, and get metal dampers. You can even get metal axles. With all of the after market parts available, you can change this truck to the way that you want it to handle.

Which one do you prefer? I was wondering if there is a big difference in performance between the i.f.s on the cc01 and the solid axle on the cc02. I'm thinking about building a custom lunchbox but want to use a 4x4 chassis
@rcdriver
@rcdriver 4 жыл бұрын
They’re both “Cross Country” trucks so they do well on flat off-road surface. The CC-02 however can handle a rougher surface. So I’d probably grab that one more often to drive. But as a long time Tamiya fan, it is cool to have an 01 on hand for something different to drive.

I enjoy your videos very much! I just purchased this Defender 90 kit a few days before this video. I really wanted the Tamiya 47361 LandFreeder 4wd Matte Black kit but could not really find at a decent price. I wish I saw this video prior to purchase. The body jiggle and damper bounce is unfortunate. I'm new to the CC01. Years ago i have several TT01s and since got rid of them as it's hard to find the proper surface to use the TT01s. Anybody have suggestions on damper or suspension upgrades (not overly expensive) to make the damper bounce look more scale authentic? Thanks all!

You can start with the softer spring set from tamiya and other tyres (tamiya mud blocks are ok if you dont want to spend a lot. Softer than the original). Next go for the rear links. Once you get rid of the two big plastic links the car improves a lot. After that, steering. And after that put a motor that fits your needs. I use an 80T perfect for crawling. Depends on what you want to do with the car.

If you're gonna put a Defender body on any Tamiya chassis, the CC-02 is the best choice as a real Defender doesn't have IFS which the CC-01 has. The CC-02 has the proper dual solid axle setup that the Defender should have

Unfortunately it looks good until you start moving. Body shakes and flaps like wings at the bottom. I like the idea but I think they kinda missed on this one. IMHO
@FuriousFilipino
@FuriousFilipino 4 жыл бұрын
Henry Bunker unfortunately, a lot of Tamiya kits suffer from this issue. The hard, ABS bodied CC-01 kits are the way to go. Tamiya’s approach to “scale” is also quite dated. They think of these kits as models first, radio controlled vehicles second-highly detailed bodies and decals, with whatever chassis fits underneath to get it moving.

One very effective way I found was putting the body clip mounts at the rear rather than facing up, it stops the rear end flapping around and there are many ways to stop the sides flapping! I have put the aluminium suspension upgrades on it, new esc, new tires, new softer dampers and barrel springs, new upgraded rear diff, (locked front diff) and a new motor, it's an absolute beast on the trails and I have fully customized it, I made a metallic blue defender 90 body shell, got a custom front bumper, added skid plates, cut the front brick and added a winch and lighting kit, it looks the part and is an absolute savage.

@@250hdd yeah totally my opinion, no idea how much this kit runs but everything looks so cheap, no suspension movement, body's shaking all around. Cheaper crawlers out there that seem to work better
@FuriousFilipino
@FuriousFilipino 4 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Coucoularis this chassis is quite an old design, and Tamiya has not caught on to the modern trail /crawl design paradigm. One thing to consider with the lack of suspension movement is that this chassis was designed with ni-cad/nimh batteries in mind, and much lighter LiPo batteries are probably being used.
@250hdd
@250hdd 4 жыл бұрын
This vehicle was never really meant to be a crawler and as @FuriousFilipino mentioned this is a very old chassis. There are much better option available if you want to crawl.

I love Tamiya Products. Sure they look a bit outdated, but that makes them so attractive to me. They are not so much Highend RCs, but highly collectible. They have a soul. Traxxas for example to me is just a powerfull motor and that's it. Most Tamiya Fans have a certain age (40+)...we are kinda nostalgic. And looking at Tamiya prices...only cheap chinese Knockoffs can beat them. And don't forget about the building experience. It's for Newbies and Cracks. 😁
