Cross Fell is the highest mountain in the Northern Pennines, an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' and is the highest point in England outside the Lake District. The summit is 893 metres (2,930 ft) in height and has a stony plateau that includes a large Cairn, a Trig Pillar and a wonderful impressive multi-directional shelter the centre of which is the highest point. We had a clear day for the walk but the going was tough with a substantial amount of boggy ground under foot. This was the final walk in our 7 day hiking adventure in the area
