Call Description:
At 1:47 p.m., Bridgeport Fire Department was alerted to a possible structure fire in the area of Cross St. While in route dispatch notified units that they were upgrading the call to a confirmed fire due to having multiple callers reporting a large and loud expansion and heavy smoke in the area. B-2 was the first unit on the scene and confirmed the dispatch report. B-2 also upgrading to a 2nd alarm with multiple expansions and exposures to building due to a trailer with some sort of oxidizer burning inside of a hazardous waste facility. Due to having hazardous materials burning command requested the Fairfield County Regional Hazmat team as well as DEEP. Shortly after, the command called for an all hands 3rd alarm. Command also requested Saybrook and Clinton's foam trailers. Old Saybrook's Rescue was also called in by DEEP's request to transport there Hazmat Trailer. Approximately a two block radius around the fire was evacuated due to the possible hazardous conditions. The fire was extinguished within 2 hours, thus far, turning the scene into a Hazmat situation. Units spent several hours conducting overhaul and Hazmat operations. There were 3 civilian injuries reported but no facilities. The fire is being investigated by the Bridgeport Fire Marchals Office as well as Connecticut State Police.
