Great scene with James Mason and David Warner from Sam Peckinpah's anti-war masterpiece "Cross of Iron".

Since my first viewing of the film many moons ago, I've always managed to remember these particular words from one of Mason's lines in this scene: "In the new Germany, if such a thing is allowed to exist...". James nailed the Colonel Brandt character like no one else could, and his great work in Peckinpah's only war movie helps keep it from becoming a lost masterpiece of World War II cinema.

David Warner RIP, reported today, age 80... -- When I was a kid, James Mason was one of my favorite actors. Even today his voice seems magical.

I love how Capt. Kiesel gives a last salute while discarding his cigarette at the same time. Just that one thoughtless and seemingly disrespectful to a superior (even though he clearly respects his colonel) action shows how he thinks outside the box.

Perhaps Kiesel is quitting smoking as his first step in following Brandt's order.

no, it's such a human thing to do, those little things you get used to... as a smoker you get used to the motions and incorporate them into other things... this is why mr. Warner is one of the unsung grats

"What are we going to do when peace comes? Plan for another war?" Very good movie - I did not think David Warner had much to do except idolize the Sergeant and make wise cracks. Any film with James Mason is a four star production.
@lorddaver57292 жыл бұрын
That is a misquote. It misses the specific point that Col. Brandt was making. What he actually said was "What will we do when WE LOSE THE WAR?" (The caps are for emphasis). And Capt. Kiesel replied - "Prepare for the next one." Brandt referring to "... when we lose the war", rather than simply saying "when peace comes", would be seen as being defeatest by his superiors. If he had been overheard by the Gestapo making that remark in a Berlin street he would have been hanged from the nearest lampost on grounds of defeatism.

Should be aware that Captain Kiesel is a "general staff officer", a.k.a. "Regimental General Staff Captain" who should be a young elite officer (around 30 yo) and the second-in-command of the regiment(and, in many cases, the one who actually commands the regiment rather than the colonel). He is much more powerful in the unit than Captain Stransky, who is a company CO.

He has an assault badge and a wound badge on his tunic, which suggests he was a line officer before being transferred to the staff, presumably after recovering from his wound.

One of the finest scenes from Cross of Iron & a lovely performance by David Warner. Please see also The Ballad of Cable Hogue for what I feel is his best performance in a Peckinpah film. He delivered the eulogy at Sam's memorial service. And Sam never had a harsh word about him. !!!! We miss you David Warner. See also the film of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream with Judi Dench et. al. The war is over. You got out & you survived.

Warner is still alive. about 79 now. But extraordinary movie. For so many reasons. The actors were perfect for this. often it's TOO realistic. Whereby u feel very uneasy or mystified by it. Coburn should have got an Oscar. but because he was a Nazi soldier,well, u know the rest. I want it on Blu Ray. There's some uncut stuff in it. I know Steiners affair with the nurse had other scenes cut. so annoying.

Oscars are a sham. They pick the best movie sometimes. There's a video out how Harvey Weinstein corrupted the Oscars process and showed how his Shakespear in Love beat Saving Private Ryan.
@lorddaver57292 жыл бұрын
But he WASN'T "a Nazi soldier". He was simply a German soldier, drafted like his comrades into an army he didn't believe in, ordered to fight where and when he was told. He had no choice, like the millions of other German soldiers, airman and sailors in WW2. Sure, many were volunteers, but most weren't. And only a relatively small number of Germans were actually members of the Nazi Party. Coburn's character's contempt for Nazi Party members is clear in his attitude towards the new member of his platoon, a former member of a "special action squad". This was what were called einsatzgruppen, SS murder squads who were tasked with the mass execution by shooting of Jewish civilians in the towns and villages they came across.

They were all brilliant actors and it's one of my favourite WW2 films,although I have to admit James Mason's attempt at speaking with a German accent failed abysmally as did James Coburn and David Warner. The German HQ withdrew the artists at the front, in the year 1916. Now, this. Maybe it is written in the handbook for officers, in the German Army? So sad for a nation and its army, losing one world war, two times.
@re10103 жыл бұрын
The reason they had a second one was because, among other things, the German officers were egotistical. They were so delusional about the idea that they could've won WW1 up to the last day, which they clearly couldn't. So instead they said "fuck it" and played on all the bad shot they were suppressing (including living space.)
