Cross Slot Drilling into Mustard

A Cross Slot drilling planting Crusoe winter wheat directly into a standing crop of mustard. The mustard was sprayed off just before the drill moved in.

Cover crop is to improve soil structure by growing roots into the soil. The crop is then destroyed by spraying off (glyphostate - same active ingredients as you can get in a garden centre) then the drill squashes it down so it can break down over the winter and feed the bugs and worms in the soil. Hope that helps

My mistake here, should have cambridge rolled at 90 degrees to the drill, then it would have chopped up the stalks into 7" lengths (not sure on headland), might not have sorted black grass though

Hello I have a few questions because I did not understand everything what you sow in this mustard? when you apply the mustard fertilization or after? if you crop, tried without glyphosate?

Hi Jake, the farm I work on has just got a 5m cross slot, what speed have you decided is the uptomum speed for drilling with the cross slot. Also what has been your best time to spray off the cover crop, 24hrs before hand ?

Hi Harry, speed varies depending on soil type and stones but about 9kph gives a good seeding depth. Spraying off just before the drill or a just before the emerges work the best. Have a good spring!

According to what I have seen on some ag uni sites you are supposed to wait 3 weeks for the fumigating property of mustard to clear from the land as it stops any other seed germinating and seeing you planting when the mustard is still growing now has me confused are you going to kill the mustard before it sets seed ?

Yes mustard already sprayed off, no issues with germinating the wheat seeds. Mustard used to fumigate some types of nematodes.

Thanks for your reply from what I seen they had tilled it in the ground and the fumigation was active for 3 weeks did not realised it was already sprayed off

Jake - can you explain the rationale for the cover crop of mustard and what you mean by 'sprayed off'? Thanks. (obvioulsy I know nothing about farming!)

I don't think it can as the radish residue, unless topped, will not go through the legs of the drill.
