Thanks for sharing this! I lived in Ireland when I was young and my grandmother would make cutwork embroidered tablecloths on linen. They were so beautiful. 🇮🇪

Great nerdy CS deep dive and I loved it! Newbie CS-er (2 yrs in) and I always wondered about those fabric names and thought that they were maybe brands. Especially loved finding out about Fiddler's Cloth - I'm currently working on a project and had commented that it seemed "close to linen" -- now I know why! Thank you ladies for taking the time to do all the research and for sharing it!

That was very interesting! I am a returning beginner... I started cross stitching when I was 16 and pick it up about once a decade. I have only ever stitched on Aida. I am going to add a few other fabrics to my list. 🇮🇪

Ok, this is from my way back memories of the 1990's monk cloth was used to make things like baby blankets and lap blankets. (I watched it all.)

🇮🇪 - I’m pretty sure Monaco is still being made, just not in the numbers of colors that it used to be. So that’s why it was a big deal when Fat Quarter Shop has worked with them to get them to make the black again recently - it’s an exclusive and they sold out quickly, but white or ivory Monaco I think is still readily available, because I think that’s what Pricilla and Chelsea like to dye themselves at home. (And I think the evenweave I picked up at Michaels recently is a Monaco, but of course I’ve misplaced the actual label and since it wasn’t a hand dyed, I didn’t think to write it down somewhere, lol)

Monk's cloth is commonly used for Swedish weaving aka huck embroidery which is a technique where you stitch the surface of the cloth and the back is still plain, on the cloth/yarn side of things cotton is typically a fairly rough material to work with while linen gets soft after washing, I don't know for sure but the mixed fabrics may in part be trying to make a nicer stitching experience by adding in the other fiber so the finished cloth is softer and easier to work with for longer periods of time (knitting with pure cotton (not pima) really tears up my fingers after a couple hours but using a mixed yarn can extend my working time)

Very helpful, thank you! There is also a newish brand made in Austria called Ubelhor, I believe, they use blended fabrics as well and they make 28ct Eva, 28 and 32ct Monica and possibly others.

🇮🇪I bet hemp would make great cross stitch fabric; it’s very much like linen. I have some hemp shirts that I love just as much as my linen ones.

The "synthetic" fibers you discussed (rayon, modal and viscose) are all synthesized from wood or bamboo cellulose, not from petroleum like nylon or polyester are, just fyi.

I am looking to buy Christiane Dehlbeck books, some are apparently out of print and I also want to buy her box with monthly pattern and displays. I know about the French needle but they are out or don't have what I want . Do you have any suggestions can these be bought in Germany and shipped to the US? Thanks for your floss tube I'm learning lots.
