[4K] Maryland Midland UBST Spills Stone!

On a rare Sunday run of the Maryland Midland UBST (stone train), I was able to chase it from 5pm-8pm when it got dark. However, while the train left the Woodsboro quarry, they went a little fast over the terrible track and cars were rocking like I've never seen before. So much so, that some of the stone in the last car was dumped all over the road.

The part of the video showing the train leaving the quarry is a good demonstration of Harmonic Rock the often occurs around 15~18mph depending on the length of the car and rails. The cars near the locomotives are stabilized by the strain on the couplers which dampens the rocking of the cars. But as you go back through the train, the strain is less and the rocking is more pronounced. But that last car with no cars behind to help dampen the rocking is left to rock as much as it wants, hence it's wild rocking.

Love the way it just cuts across the road at Westminster, MD . A few great shots of progress there. So often you don't get a full shot showing how many wagons are on, but you surely delivered. ( also good that we only get the true loco sound and not any stupid music that wouldn't do it justice anyway.😅👍

In some countries "lifting a wheels flange above the height of the top of the rail" is part of the definition of a derailment.

This constant rocking is hard on equipment too especially the suspension and springs. These cars may have only rocked for a short time, but they rock all day on some other lines.

The last car doesn't only spill stones, the wheels are lifting-off from the (shitty) track when rocking. A derailment is a matter of time. Apart from this, the cars aren't loaded equally.

Why do so many trains seem to deliberately travel at the exact speed that harmonic rocking occurs? A 5mph increase or decrease in speed seems to eliminate the rocking, yet you see these trains frequently just loafing along rocking themselves almost off the rails for extended periods.

@@scdevon I assume the harmonic rocking causes the track to dip in places which emphasise it even more. Especially when the rolling stock is identical every time.

Have to say they're very lucky that last car didn't go over bcuz that could've been a domino effect for other cars! I like how it ran right through the town of Westminister! Nice catch. I sometimes do some work at the Lehigh Cement plant and catch a couple of engines switching cement covered hoppers around down at the bottom of the hill, but this was nice to see some of the spots I drive by, but never get to catch them at. What you saw where the last car launched some stone was the 14 (and later 28) mph harmonic oscillation that sets up with jointed track and the spring rates of the cars. The fact the track was worse than average, and the cars were loaded I'd suspect well above their max fill level which further raises the center of gravity exacerbating the oscillation problem, you almost caught a wreck on film. If they had started their acceleration out of the quarry 2 engine lengths sooner, they'd have likely been on the ground.
@kleetus92
@kleetus92 Жыл бұрын
@Ronald Lee Kuehne You know they changed the line into the plant now? It no longer runs through town, it goes out on the opposite side of the plant, up and over a huge hill down to the main on a new wye that was put in at a farm. I think that's why they have so much more power on the line, to make those moves possible.

@TheBeeMan1994
@TheBeeMan1994 3 жыл бұрын
The rock was caused by the crappy track work right before the crossing, you can see there’s a few low joints in a row, with the way they are spaced (every 19.5 ft with 39 ft rail) 13 mph will cause what’s called harmonic rock, the cars aren’t overloaded just cause they are loaded over the top, as long as they aren’t over weight. The low joints right before the crossing caused the cars to harmonic rock across it, spilling the rock, not the fact they were loaded over the top. The shortline I work for we have ballast cars loaded up like that, never had spillage issues unless it was across really bad rail

Yeah, the driver could of crawled out of the quarry, he had to know about that poor track going in to pick up the train, so he should have made allowances for it, a couple of extra minutes at a slower speed may save a future derailment there.

Rockin' and Rollin' RR style. I like it and hey, spreadin' a little grit on an icy road ain't all bad. Hey, is the rockin' and rollin' due to the road bed or the hopper suspension or both? What say you? It does appear that that last hopper was a bit too overloaded.

That train is awfully loud -- I mean, the screeching cars are louder than the diesel locomotive! Was that normal? Did the screeching come from the bearings, or were the flangs constantly hitting the rails? The way I've understood it, the flangs are only supposed to hit the rails at tighter "corners". Also, do trains over there constantly blare the horn? I live some 200 meters from tracks in Finland, and pretty much the only thing I hear is the diesel engine a couple of times per day. A train horn is heard maybe once a month. I think they only use it if there's someone or something on the tracks. Though, to be fair, the trains around here rarely carry stone, so I don't know how they would sound like under a really heavy load like that.

That’s what’s known as careless overloading. The quarry can be slammed with a massive fine and the railroad can get slapped by a huge fine for not stopping the overload and and potentially causing a derailment due to continuing the trip with a severely overloaded train.
