Crossing Gate Smashes into the ground! Gate Malfunction!

This gate on New Bridge Road in Bergenfield, NJ was having this issue for about a day, so we decided to go take a look for our selfs. Once the gates would activate, the gate would fall down, turning into a complete free fall. Dangerous for cars, and in the end, very bad for the crossing signals. If a car was to try and beat the gates, that could do some serious damage. CSX was informed shortly after I left, and would be worked on and fixed the following day. The whole gate arm would need to be changed from the force of the impact many times over, but it was finally back to normal!

If a driver lost a windshield here, he'd never try to beat another train. When I get honked at, I don't move for another 15 seconds (or more sometimes 😂).

0:44 That gate just drop down like it couldn't even lowered down slowly instead because it must've been a bad malfunction. The gate almost broke anyway when it dropped down to the ground like that.

This crossing is in serous need of an upgrade, and i was told that sometime next year, it will be getting new gate mechs and cantilevers

I filmed at this crossing a few days ago, they completely replaced the gate mechanism that caused this hold clear malfunction. The arms however are attached to the new mechanism

No need to change the mech. And it wasn’t ahold clear problem. It’s the motor brushes.

That’s not what a hold clear is for. The problem is a motor brush. A hold clear is only used to hold a gate up. Once it releases it free spins. The downward motion is slowed by the brushes in the motor. The hold clear has nothing to do with the gate dropping

@@kaseyaldrich4746 If this is a motor-brush issue, I would not expect the gate to go back up so easy, while it looked fine doing so. Brushes aren't directional. I think this is a switch problem: switches on the axle the gate is attached to actuate on the position of the gate itself and either use resistors or a special sequence of shorting windings on the motor to brake the descent.

@@weeardguy I cant tell you how many times I’ve pulled out dirty brushes and just blown the carbon off and out of the motor, after pushing the gate back up. Also stood there and replaced pawls and ratchet wheels. I don’t say these things because I made it up, I say them because I’ve taken these calls one to many times. You’re never going to take a call that is absolutely the same as the last one or the next one you’ll take. Could it be the brushes? Absolutely. Could it be something else? Absolutely. Thats why we try and tell the younger guys to pull your brushes on atleast a quarterly, clean your contacts, watch for arcing, and if you came figure out, call one of your adjoining maintainers regardless of what time it is.

5:53 a little bit impatient aren't we? I believe by law if the lights are still flashing, you're not allowed to cross the tracks. But the time between the lights not flashing and the horns was nearly instantaneous.

Wouldn't hurt the windshield because of how windshields are constructed. They are two pieces of glass with a laminated film in between. The gate would just bounce right off...

Well not sure why The RailRoads Dropped the Prop Rod but But Crossing Gates use to have Prop Rods as the Gate lowered the Rod was there to help support the Gate but in the situation of this Gate it would probably smash the Gate and Prop Rod both maybe CSX can help this Chick by fixing its Wing and its interior components.. lucky no one was near this Gate might of hurt a bystander..

Yes that would have helped stop in from hitting the ground, but still would do damage to the rod. CSX did fix it the next day and no one was hurt, luckily, like you said.

Bad gate mechanism or gate maybe loose after hitting the ground like that this would normally happen if the mechanism messed up when a gate drops that fast gate mechanism is definitely bad

Signal Maintainer Here. Rare issue but easy to fix. Easiest way to put is the feedback resistors are either blown to shit or WAY the hell out of calibration since both the road gate and ped gate both are hooked to the same gear relay. Simple fix tho. If it’s out of calibration, a simple 50° twist on the resistor nuts will tighten it and buffer the drop speed. If it’s blow, replace it. I always keep a few spares in my high-railer.

Pretty simple fix. Nine times out of then the motor brushes are bad or dirty and that’s what causes this. Super simple

I'm not so sure that a railroad crossing gate would/could smash a vehicle's windshield even if the gate were in freefall. Windshield glass is really tough, and railroad gates are very lightweight.
