After attempting it twice without success due to bad ocean conditions, my 4th time was a charm and I finally crossed the Knysna Heads onto the Indian Ocean. This is a special moment that will live in my head for years to come.
Exiting the Knysna Lagoon through the Knysna Heads onto the Indian Ocean must be approached with due care and attention to local conditions. Various operators such as Knysna Pirate Ship operate on the Knysna Lagoon, however, crossing the Knysna Heads onto the Indian Ocean is not guaranteed.
Stats indicate that on average, only 1 in every 4 leisurely boat trips manage to cross the Heads and when that happens, it’s a special moment for both the Skipper and passengers.
All Skippers entering or exiting the Knysna Lagoon must be qualified and in possession of a relevant chart. The chart provides information on the safe passage through the Heads. They also take full responsibility for any decisions concerning navigation through the Heads and within the lagoon.
