In 2021 I built a 19' boat from a kit. The boat is a Class Globe 5.80, designed for home building, but with ocean racing credentials.
I kind of accidentally entered the first race ever for these boats, the Transat. I never intended to race the boat, but things seemed to fall into place so I ended up in Portugal in November 2021 with a boat that I'd only sailed for about 24 hours before rocking up on the start line of the qualifier to Lanzarote. The main event was the Lanzarote to Antigua leg, which this video is about.
I'm not really a racer, let alone an ocean crosser, but I learnt a few things on the way and, apart from this video being epically nerdy and probably quite boring, I hope it helps my fellow 5.80 builders with lessons learned from my mistakes, but maybe also help inspire others to get their boats in the water.
Take what i say in the video with a pinch of salt, at the time it made sense, and may not now. I'm not a very experienced boat builder or even a great sailor, so a good proportion of what is in the video may well be complete rubbish... :)
For other random boaty stuff (including a build blog for the boat) my site is here: northcardinal.co.uk/
For more info on the event or the boats, the official Class Globe 5.80 site is here www.classglobe580.com/

Mate I thought all these KZfaqrs where pretty rad for crossing oceans in a 30-40’ boat alone, then you come alone with a home made boat, only 19’ long and you ace it. That is truly amazing. All the best mate, John from Canada

Is that your real name? Its sort of mine and I get cyber stalked and gang stalked and beamed with voice to skull weapons.. A targeted individual.. Very bad since we are supposed to be living in the land of the free.. What a drag to have so many people making a living off the misery of others and if you are one of them, making fun of the subject on youtube, telling him that you love him.. If I'm off.. Please share this information with others : Google > ELF waves mind control - targeted individual, If right, the voice in my head that calls himself Robert Rockefeller and sometimes Rothschild says : Shame on you!.. That really is the dream, isn't it Tony? That is such a decent boat as well, looking for all the world like a craftsman-built factory boatin every way. I had just stumbled across this video and thought the boat this chap had was especially nicely-made, with a gorgeous finish to it, so when he said he'd built it I was stunned. I love that boat.

Head down. YOU just put those KZfaq'rs and "sailing influencer" in their place. You did EXACTLY what I have been talking about for years. Crossing anything with a 40 ft. Vessel is nothing, but still, they find the nerve to judge people on their "production" boats, vs. the holy gral of "true blue water" boat nonsense. Cudos and a big ciguar for your accomplishments. Well done. Very well done indeed.

Check out Wave Rover 20’ oceanic voyager! In my research for singlehand sailing a 26’-28’ length is perfect any bigger the proportions of length vs the strength of build diminish. I’m refitting a 17’ boat for a California to Hawaii June 2025 crossing she will be tough as nails and safe as can be!
