In the post 9/11 world of increased security, a place like this shouldn't exist. In East Richford, Vermont E. Richford Slide Road starts in the United States, dips north into Quebec, Canada and then returns to the U.S. All without a border crossing.
You can't just cross the border illegally here...the Border Patrol are everywhere.

I remember being on a family vacation to Europe when I was 10. We were on a highway (autobahn?) going between Germany and Switzerland. The road twisted and turned through the forest, and my parents explained that the road kept going back and forth between Switzerland and Germany. I thought it was cool that we didn't have to stop at a border crossing each time, and my parents explained that was because we couldn't get off the highway to do anything, so customs weren't bothered.

You can not be always lucky. Switzerland is part of the Schengen agreement but not of the EU's customs union. You can be stopped anytime by the Swiss customs officers whether you are coming from Germany, Austria, Italy or France. Customs officers always control border crossings between Basel and Weil am Rhein or near Martina where Austria and Switzerland meet.

If you take a Yukon excursion from Skagway, Alaska, during a cruise you'll learn that both countries have their checkpoints far from the actual border. It's because there's nothing between them... plus the practical benefits of staying "near town" with a road that's so hard to keep open during the winter. In contrast I've read that a different border crossing (on the Can-Am Highway?) is in a single building that's shared by the respective agencies.

There are tons of places like this along the US-Canada border in rural or farming areas. It only seems unusual to people who have not lived along this border, especially with all the publicity about problems along the border with Mexico. The northern border is an entirely different kettle of fish, there is no one living within 100mi of this border, either in US or Canada, who is not related in some way with the people across the border, so up until 9-11 we went across the border in both directions as casually as one crosses the lines between towns. The official border crossings are now a lot more complicated to use, but out in the sticks we just don't bother with it, and the officials on both sides look the other way. There are two (or more) very good reasons for this: Reason #1, We have THOUSANDS of miles of common border with Canada, and if we used every single member of the border patrol together with every single member of our armed services, we would have JUST BARELY ENOUGH personnel to patrol and enforce our border. Reason #2 I stated previously, in addition to which, our two economies are tied together for common benefit. The US and Canada basically are brother and sister, so our border line is fairly unique, not adverserial as is the case with Mexico.
@AdventuresWithMe00
@AdventuresWithMe00 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Allan. I can appreciate the unique nature of the border. After I visited I did some more research and saw a number of buildings in Derby, VT that cross both borders. I like this common sense approach to border security. I can remember about 10 years ago going to the border crossing in Pittsburg, NH. It was a small building and the Border Patrol would come out and joke with us. Then the small building got replaced with something larger and more militarized replaced it. Seemed out of keeping with the rural nature of the area. It's a shame to lose places like that and I hope this peculiarity continues to exist.

I'm interested in how the US and Canada allowed a road to be like that. What was the speed limit. 30 mph on the US and 50 kmh in Canada? Very cool travels.
@AdventuresWithMe00
@AdventuresWithMe00 6 жыл бұрын
thanks! I don't recall the speed limit signs, but it's a relatively narrow dirt road so I expect the speed limit would be 30-35 tops. It's not a well traveled road. From what I remember there are only a few homes on the western section. The Canadian section is so short...literally 100 yards or so, that it's not marked. I don't think the authorities want to call attention to it either by posting signs in French. My theory is that the original road did not cross the border but there was some event, like a rock slide, that required that the road be detoured north. That certainly happened in the days before 9/11 with the heightened border security. That's what makes it so cool to me...it's an anomaly that you'd never see today. A reminder of when we had a saner, less militarized approach, IMO. There are other examples of this. In Vermont there is a library in Derby Line that was built on the border with Stanstead, Quebec and you can literally walk into the building and see the border marked off on the floor. www.atlasobscura.com/articles/the-us-canada-border-runs-through-this-tiny-library

The border "cut" was crudely done and never a straight line as intended. Once the technology caught up to indicate accurate lines the "mistakes" were not corrected. There are many examples of this. In fact there are a couple towns where the border cuts through center of streets, homes, etc.

Crossing the US-Canada border without going through an official checkpoint is illegal and not recommended. Both the United States and Canada have strict border control measures in place to ensure the safety and security of their respective countries. Attempting to cross the border without going through a checkpoint is considered illegal entry and can result in severe consequences. It is important to follow the proper procedures and go through the designated border checkpoints when crossing between the US and Canada. This involves presenting your valid travel documents, such as a passport or visa, and complying with the customs and immigration requirements of both countries. If you are planning to travel between the US and Canada, I strongly advise you to use the official border crossings to avoid any legal issues.

Border officers are aware he's there using sensors and drone cameraa as he does this. Google maps are not as precise he suggests. I doubt that either government thinks he's in Canada.

I was right there, physically at the border. There is a "no man's land" of cleared space between the two countries. You can clearly see that the no man's land runs right into the road and the border marker is also right on the side of the road. I have no doubt that I was being monitored by border agents, and I'm equally convinced I was on Canadian soil. I would encourage anyone close to go up there and see it for themselves.

Thank you for posting this. I will be contacting homeland security tomorrow about putting border crossing on this road. This is very serious situation which needs to be address immediately.

Everyone who has watched this video is now on a watch list... If you "like" it.. Oh boy! :p. j/k... Fun to see this stuff... I have a legit US passport and have traveled all over the place.. My snarky comment aside, what if any are the penalties if I crossed over without getting an entry stamp? Zero malicious intent.. More thinking about areas where there isn't a checkpoint than anything. (I actually like the stamps [if given] coming and going - very irregular for me)
