How FC2 holds up 10 years later. FC5 has its own attention to details that FC2 doesn't have, this comparison doesn't mean FC5 has nothing to show.
Both games run under a different version of the Dunia engine (Ubisoft-modified CryEngine).
If you don't know which game is which, Far Cry 5 always cuts before Far Cry 2, clips fade in when it's just another example from the same game.
Recorded on PC, ultra settings.
What's missing:
- FC2: Rain, no dynamic weather in FC5 • Rain in Far Cry 2
- FC5: Fire through walls with armor piercing ammo • Far Cry 5 - How To Get...
- FC5: Large ammo boxes explode • Hey Crowbcat:
- FC2: Golden AK-47 variant, less prone to corrosion • Far Cry 2 Gold AK47
Song samples from Delta Force Black Hawk Down OST: • Delta Force - Black Ha... ; • Delta Force - Black Ha... ; • Delta Force - Black Ha...

@@mkultrasoldier yeah but a good optimized 3d model won't take much space. High resolution images and audio files will take much space but still maybe, because I have used some modern game engines, I think games these days also ship with unwanted chunks of engine data. Remember in FC4 we get map editor, that wouldn't be possible without an engine or at least it's world editor. In some cases the executable file of the engine becomes the games executable file which hints embedding. (Edit: I know that FC2 had map editor. For some reason a lot of people think I don't know that and are replying like "Uh you know FC2 had map editor". Yes I know dumb ass. I have been playing games since I was 4 or 5 ok. Vito C ikr, It's almost like they're pandering to the masses without taking into consideration the real target audience is right in front of them: Their real, long-time and long-term fans. I played Far Cry 3 and wanted more, so I got Far Cry 4. I thought it was fun and a step up, but wamted more of that man/tiger gameplay, so I got Far Cry: Primal. Loved it. I wanted to see where it all (mostly, Far Cry 1 is terrible) began, so I got Far Cry 2. Definitely a different take, but I enjoyed it all the same. The real fans aren't the ones who buy your game blindly at face value, only knowing the most basic information and making the purchase without taking into consideration all the little details. It's all because the little details and the hidden animations and the tiny, pointless things are what make the games seem more real than they really are. It's what makes the difference between another sequel to a game franchise and a real masterpiece. Same with Assassin's Creed III, IV and Syndicate. Same Combat. Now Assassin's Creed: Origins. That is a masterpiece. It really feels like time was put into it with its fidelity, sense of realism and immersion, the finer things that really do matter actually pop when you look for them and enhance your gaming experience just that much more when you find them. They're what seperate the repetitious games from the true outlying masterpieces.

Far cry 2 is super interesting to me just because it perfectly encapsulates the difference between immersion and realism. If you watch jonathon ferguson's review of the guns in the game, they get most of it wrong, but despite that, it still feels intense. It doesnt make sense for the ak to explode like that, but while playing the game, feels a lot more tense and immersive. Honestly games in that mid 2000s era are really interesting with their attention to detail and creative uses of physics (fear, might and magic, sr2 etc.). I love that we're no longer in the brown military shooter era of games, but I do miss the emphasis that was put on the player's effect on the environment from ragdoll kicking or minor destructible environments ala gears of war 1.

Something I absolutely love is how the enemy NPCs interact with each other in FC2. They're always communicating to each other, covering each other, playing dead, healing each other, and even flanking the player. The NPCs in FC2 also wear very camouflaging clothes, even as a guy with 20/20 vision trying to find these fuckers is so difficult because they blend in with their environment.

The Dunia Engine was so goated along with the map creations you could make. It sort of doesn't surprise me that triple A gaming companies don't give any attention to the little details like they used to and focus on making the quickest "finished" product only for it to end up half baked. We really were spoiled back then and i'm glad many of us got a chance to experience it all.

Edit: I feel like maybe, this is incorrect. There are plenty of big budget games that get years of development time, and still don’t have the sort of ‘extra’ details that extend beyond normal gameplay that you sometimes saw a decade ago. I think the comments below about poor management being the case are probably right. Maybe because of longer development cycles. Wouldn’t surprise me if, in the four or five years it took to make a game back then, individual devs had more free time to work on nifty touches in spare time, especially unplanned ones. Shorter development time means less time to add features on the fly.

I think it lies down to the game engine. All new Ubisoft titles use game engines where there's a noticeable lack of physics, weight and interaction. Alot of things like ragdoll are barely in these games anymore, in favour of locking bodies to the ground etc. I hope we see a return to detail and better game engines with these new consoles.

And not to mention what it felt like to lose one of your buddies on the battlefield. They come in like a guardian angel to drag you out of trouble, Bullets flying by as you fade in and out of consciousness. You felt like they were putting their neck on the line to stabilize your wounds.which was why it hurt so much when they died. Youre in a gunfight same as any and call for backup from your favorite buddy, you mess up the outpost but then they fall to the ground. You rush over to help them but they're beyond messed up. Your medicine isn't working, and you realize they're not going to make it as they overdose on your morphine instead of returning to their feet. That shit was dramatic as hell, and i don't know how ubisoft went from that, to you flopping over while waiting for your AI friend to get unstuck and help you.

The attention to detail in older games is always incredible, but at the same time, I feel there's a harsh reality surrounding it. Back in those days, having immersive, highly detailed, interactive environments and such made your game stand out from all the others, especially in the middle of the Xbox, PS2, GameCube era, and the early to mid-Xbox 360 and PS3 era. Game devs and companies pushed themselves to showcase that their game engines were capable of handling all the amazing physics as well as how intricate and clever of an Ai they can design to accompany it so that we, the consumers, would buy it and play to see for ourselves. Nowadays it's all about dumb 4K resolution this, ray-tracing that, microtransaction all those, live-service everything rather than actual immersion and attention to detail. I'll take 480p with the power to destroy a whole city in an amazing, particle effect, debris filled mushroom cloud that makes my system bow down to its knees over some bullshit fancy lighting effects that make next to no fucking difference unless I use a microscope and stand still in one specific spot of the entire game all day, every day.

Plus it goes both ways. what it felt like to lose one of your buddies on the battlefield was emotional, even if you barely knew them. Your medicine isn't working, and you realize they're not going to make it as they overdose on your morphine instead of returning to their feet. yeah, in FarCry2 the ingame world feels "real" and in FarCry5 it feels much more like fake decorations.

I’m literally flabbergasted learning about how much detail was put into these decade old games, details i thought would be the norm by now but that i have not seen in forever…

That's insane. Farcry 3 was the first one I played and now I realized I missed out big time. Feels like a Kojima game!

Nah you didn’t miss out. Far Cry 2, while detail-wise is extremely impressive, can be annoying. I mean it’s a great game but I believe 3 is better. Streamlines some more annoying aspects, and while I do wish they maybe pulled back on the UI, it’s still an amazing game.

3 is definitely better. Fewer little details, sure, but on the whole it's a much prettier, much bigger, much more enjoyable game. People who played FC2 when it came out remember it fondly with rose colored glasses. It looks bad, it plays *atrociously*, it's objectively worse in basically every way, but if you love it, you love it (coming from someone who doesn't). It's the same way people love the N64 Zeldas, or gen I Pokemon, or Core Design Tomb Raider for me. If you aren't nostalgic for it, you're probably not going to have much fun.

@@Coco-oy5smimo it's due to people approaching it the same way they would 3 through to 6, as an open world fps power fantasy, when this game is meant to be oppressive, gritty and unfair with the odds stacked against you. You aren't meant to be an action movie hero, you're just another guy trying to survive in a pointless war you've managed to get mixed up in, fighting for people who don't care about you or the country they're trying to control, and with few people you can actually trust not to stab you in the back the moment it would benefit them. It's essentially the Pathologic of fps, and is more akin thematically to stuff like Spec Ops: The Line than the rest in the series.

@@Coco-oy5sm Late to the party, but i've played FC3 first, then jumped to FC2. Idk, i prefer FC2 more. I played FC3 once and never looked back. I finished FC2 three times, each with different play style because i like to try things out. Not seeing the game through rose tinted glass mind you, i tried FC3 and FC2 during the pandemic, that was my very first interaction with FarCry franchise.

I've recently been noticing that developers are stopping putting details (enviromental or physics) into recent games. I think it's because according to them in the end they're just little things that no one notices and they take up memory, since we play games just for play, not to watch the grass burn all day realistically, but why remove them? The beauty of thes little things are discovering and appreciating the game world even more.
