EXACTLY re: the unlovable part. When he said that in S1, for the first time in my life I reacted violently to a statement. Actually threw my iPad across the room, shattering it on a wall! It deeply struck a nerve, obviously, but Aziraphael’s words weren’t any sort of salve. I found myself being forced to face my own demons after that (never watched the rest of the series, or S2. I watch edits like this one to get the gist. iPads are too expensive, and I don’t own a TV)! I spent 2+ years in trauma therapy because of a line uttered by a chaotic cartoonish demon. I’m pretty sure that Crowley is an archetype for many of us who have been rejected by family, friends, and would be loved ones, just as Aziraphael is for those who have struggled with church doctrines or religious abuse.

@@GingerPeacenikYou're absolutely right. I have watched both series all the way through three times now. I know that my obsession overreaction stems from my own trauma. The last scene of series 2 leaves me sobbing every time I watch it, but I keep repeating it as if it's some kind of desensitization treatment. I also keep going back to the moment in series 1, episode 6 where Satan is coming to deal with Adam. Crowley wants to give up but Aziraphale says, "Do something or I'll never speak to you again." Crowley stops time and he and Aziraphale stand in their true forms, wings and all. They're both so beautiful with their wings extended. Aziraphale tells Adam that he hoped that he was heaven incarnate and feared that he was hell incarnate, and then realized that he was human incarnate, and that the two of them would stand beside Adam through whatever happens. They take his hands, Crowley starts time, and they face Satan together. Why recite all that? Because I have been slowly taking that scene as a model for recovering from trauma. I've felt such an attachment to Crowley because I see myself in him. My upbringing convinced me that I am unlovable and my life and (failed) relationships reinforced that. But what I've started to see is that I let myself be convinced yet again by outside forces that I am wholly bad and unlovable. But when i imagine holding both Aziraphale and Crowley's hands, I know that I too am human incarnate, embodying both good and bad elements. That's why Aziraphale and Crowley love humanity so much - not just Adam, but all of us.

@@carolb6511 thank you for sharing that Carol. Makes me feel a bit less alone in it. I did have the whole of season one play through when it came out, but I was working on a feature film at the time (VisDev, can listen but eyes need to be elsewhere) so I didn’t actually see much of it. Just thought it seemed like a cute little comedy at the time. When I sat down to actually watch the first three episodes, it hit me entirely differently. Funny thing was that I didn’t think that my extreme reaction to Crowley had anything at all to do with me when it happened. I thought that it had something to do with a close friend who had been killed in a freak accident while doing a favor for me (he was a gay man who loved Neil Gaiman), or it had something to do with Terry Pratchett. We were FB friends who frequently debated each other on a couple of issues (we agreed 90% of the time on other stuff) , but he died shortly after a particularly heated exchange, and I have regrets, obviously. Plus Neil was in our social circle, though I’ve never met him, complex stuff happened there regardless…anyway, long story shorter; bizarre, FREAKISHLY bizarre synchronicities happened to me in 2020. Turned my whole world view sideways. Eventually they lead me to AO3 to seek answers, as I was confounded by them. The answers I found might help you as well. I wrote a little about it on the only post I have there, titled “Da Vinci’s demon?”. Truly bizarre to have one’s life altered so measurably by a silly comedy series-especially when one is a jaded former film industry person- but there it is. If Terry only knew….

@@GingerPeacenik Sounds like you may not be as jaded as you think! Personally, I can't watch films or TV much since some push me into an altered state. Perhaps you've seen "Being There" with Peter Sellers? I first saw it 40 years ago when it came out and I can still remember the transcendent feeling it evoked. I have enough trouble dealing with normal human reality without that type of experience, especially now when I have no one to share it with. I'm sorry about your friend. It sounds horrific. No wonder you've suffered in the aftermath. Regrets, ah, yes, I'm very familiar with them. But now I'm trying to retrain myself so that every time I feel the pull of Crowley's darkness, I ask Aziraphale to tug at me with the light. We embody both, if we can just remember it. I looked up "Da Vinci's demon?" in AO3. Your art is lovely. My only vaguely artistic talent is gardening. Since you mentioned synchronicities, last night I saw a brief YT video of David Tennant in Richard II. A small synchronicity that your images are reminiscent of David in that role, including the long hair. The first vid I watched was "defo not the richard ii kiss" and it is the opposite of the Crowley/Aziraphale kiss. I'm now ready to have my life altered by "a silly comedy series". I'm in the process of selling my house in America and moving back to the UK, where I've lived most of my adult life. I'm getting ready to try being around people again - I don't know in what way or capacity, but I know life is a limited time offer. I'm heading into my late 60s, so I've got to figure this out soon. I am looking forward to figuring out if Terry's Discworld version of death is right - you get the afterlife you expect. Mine will be spent as a gardener, if Death is so inclined to grant my wish. Thank you for replying so fully. You are the only person I've had this depth of conversation with in several years. It's nice not to feel alone for a little while. Neil Gaiman is one of the last gifted story tellers who knows how to find the balance between fan service and staying true to his works. I wish I had a piece of his talent and vision.
