I always loved the sound of the Crown with the Detroit Turbo Diesel Engine taking off from a standstill position. I so miss the Crowns in Wenatchee, Washington.

Early Crown (and Gillig) buses used the Detroit 6L71 engine. Great engine, had a distinguishable snap at the tailpipe. Later models switched over to the 6N71 engine. The ones I saw had automatic transmissions as they were suitable for them, but the few our school district had in manual transmission, the noticeable differences is the smoother takeoff and less tailpipe noise as the engine would lie on it's side. Other than that, we also had crowns fitted with Cummins 220s and other model diesel engines.

@@josephmodhu5633 honestly both are good and cool but itf I were to chooese one I would do a 40ft mid engine 5 speed or 10 speed with a detroit 6-71 or the 40ft rear engine twinkie with the cummins 8.3

You probably didn't get the chance to ride any of them, as they were probably long since obsolete, the older 50's and 60's Crowns with the gasoline Hall Scott engines were sure a fun ride.

Yep the oldest crown I have ridden. Was this one a 1987 crown supercoach

I'm pretty sure Anaheim Union high School district either has just five left or they got rid of them all. Because when I was younger I used to see these buses in the back of sycamore Junior high.

I'm pretty sure they got rid of them all, but remember seeing pictures of Anaheim union crowns.

In California, most of these old Crowns were retired and destroyed through a program to cut smog. I used to ride these all the time when I was in Jr. High and High school in the early 80's, so I have a soft spot for the old beasts. They have a very distinct sound and even with 50 band geeks and our instrument on board, kids standing up would be knocked off their feet-- Those engines have unbelievable torque! Does anyone know if other states are still using them?
@crownking3752 Жыл бұрын
I think most are retired i know some small charter companies or contractors like LP express or brooks transportation in los Angeles still use them sometimes
@b.n.c.v5792 Жыл бұрын
