It's a lot of work and I remember camps in the 90's being just like this. Not much has changed in that aspect. Giving up several weekends each month along with the major holidays leading up to summer is a big commitment.

What I feel the most important part of this activity is....teach them how to play their horns :) I'd send any student interested in DCI to Crown.
@poconofriend7774 жыл бұрын
Without prior experience marching in a corps, they most likely wouldn't make it. Crown is very competitive and in order to make it you need to stand out. That means either have experience that others don't or have skills that others don't. If you aren't an all State caliber musician, I wouldn't be trying out for crown with no experience in dci.

What chord is that? The one before the resolution?
@ABruckner84 жыл бұрын
Best guess after a few listenings (all concert pitch): Trumpets sustain Eb major, bottom up Bb-Eb-G. Next chord is Ab minor, but tubas on Eb. Melodic passing motive for Mellos is Ab-Bb-Cb. Bari/Euph move to A Major (E-A-C#, tubas still on Eb). Last chord is Eb Major. (Bari/Euphs resolve Up; everyone else resolves down or stays on Eb. Maybe some lead mellos move to high Eb.)

@@TheBANDit_67 Just takes practice, like any other skill. You could start by using a keyboard, trying to match up pitches as you play along. Also, improvisation helps: Makes your brain/ear focus outside the box, adding insight you might not otherwise think about. After awhile, your brain starts to "map out" what you hear. Granted, in this simple Crown example, nothing new was going on; we've heard stuff like this before. Pattern recognition more than anything. Some people on KZfaq have transcribed entire shows, lol. Mad respect to them!

It breaks my heart. So much time, work, and dedication is put in by these talented musicians and staff..........then we ad the electronic synthesizer and blow all that work out the door ! Call me a purist. What made DCI special to me was every note came out of a human being. And when a corps would capture that sound (1996 for me, couldn't believe the lower brass sound of Regiment) It would be a special thing.....and it came from a human being....not a microprocessor ! I don't want this misconstrued because I love the lot videos. Monster sounds...monster talent. The shows just aren't the same any more because a guy banging amplified sounds on a keyboard isn't doing it for me and is not what Drum Corps is......to me at least.
@Cmmf_4 жыл бұрын
Hey, new gen DCI fan here. I can agree with your sentiment, to an extent. There are places where synths can sound and add to the experience of a show tenfold, but at the current moment, corps are having a hard time finding where those spots are. I feel like bluecoats 2014 and 2015 definitely had an excellent usage of the synth, without making the hornline insignificant. CC 2019 was definitely a step in a better direction with the synths, same as SCV 2018. I like the idea of having a time and place for the synths (Drum features seem like the ideal spot, or some creative gimmicks, idk), but at the same time leaving the meat of the music to the hornline. I feel like if DCI pushes in _that_ direction, we will get to see some truly beautiful shows. But who knows, maybe they won't, but I feel like DCI is just evolving in a way that's against the grain. I really miss 16 contra lines, though. CC 2012's contra line was impenetrable.
@zanemeek9042 Жыл бұрын
This is just weird - the musicianship and playing in DCI (and all of the marching arts) have never been done at a higher level than they are today. The electronics don't take the place of the human musicians, they enhance what they can do and give more options for sound.
