Why you don;t use a mirror? Back in 90' and 80' when CRT was still a thing, TV repair workshops had a mirror on every bench to observe the screen while manipulating inside the device.

Very helpful, I've just done my own arcade monitor build with a 19" tv tube and a Hantarex Chassis + yoke for my street fighter 2 machine, I've got the convergence rings spot on but one corner won't converg right luckily I had some strips on the old tube and only 1 strip fixed the corner issue, cheers.

Damn... how can you walk normally when you have such big cojones in the middle? I own a 2005 SONY Trinitron 29KV, and it has this convergence in the top left corner. If... I can't fix that with the Service Menu... I guess I won't fix it. Too coward to open that 50 Kilo monster, let alone sticking magnets to it while turned on.

From what I hear you can make convergent strips with just pieces of cardstock, double-sided tape and the rolls of cheap magnet that you can buy at the hardware store

People like to talk about crts like they are some kind of death box but nobody talks about microwaves, one microwave transformer can easily kill you, my neighbor died trying to fix one

Just bought a 2008 Emerson CR202EM9 in 2020, and it’s had a minor warping issue in each corner since the day I got the TV While I’m far too worried to mess with an opened CRT myself, it’s nice to know that convergence strips are something I can mention when I have a retro TV shop service technician look at it (in addition to having them observe unbalanced stretching on the left edge of the screen compared to the right, which as I’ve read apparently is a yoke misalignment)

Hey Steve, I’ve been tinkering in a couple PVMs I have and I found that some magnets did a great job to clear up some corner purity issues, but for corner convergence 2 different sets of convergence strips I obtained do absolutely nothing. Is there a reason they would have no effect on the screen?

I have another question: If the corner converge is even worse than that, can it be caused by a bad cap for example? And is there another way to fix corner convergence than using magnets? I heard using magnets is kind of a hack. I tried using (even a big magnet) on one of my CRTs, but couldn't pull out the corner far enough (I didn't however try shoving it under the yoke).

hi steve, i got some of those strips from a smashed tv monitor i found on the street trash. but looking at the video i really can't understand where does the magnetic part has to go, i see you moving the strip arround but the magnetic end of the strip has to go really deep towards the copper narrow area of the crt? or magnet can go anywhere in the black back area? whats the difference putting a magnet in the top black area and difference putting magnet in the bottom narrow area near the copper?

what are those wedge rubber pads for on the crt? i had to adjust one since it fell off. it made imy tv turn on then off immediately for awhile, I let my tv sit over night then next morning it works just fine.

Are those strips and magnets on all trinitrons inside? I have consumer one a flat screen wega fd trinitron with a slight bit of that in the top left hand corner but no where else. Would I need to adjust it like that or with the focus pot as it's slightly out of focus aswell and bending down in the corner? Or is it a service menu fix? 🤔

The convergence on my beautiful new Sony KV-21X5U Trinitron has partially buggered convergence in the corners, but I was able to fix them mostly with the service menu. Except for the top left. I can’t quite make that perfect. But I’m a massive idiot and I’m too scared to take the back off and fix it.

@@slamdownwarfare No, it's surprisingly easy actually. Make sure you take a photo of current settings when going in there, in case you alter anything for the worse, and don't randomly play with stuff. With the TV off, press the i+ button, 5, volume up and the button above the 1 button. See page 20 - www.manualslib.com/products/Sony-Trinitron-Kv-21c5b-3529360.html (C5 and X5 are similar except for the speakers - manual is for both). The geometry section has what you need. Note that you'll need to be showing a 50Hz picture at the time - if you're using a 60Hz signal (e.g. with the 240p Test Suite set to 240p mode, rather than 576i / 288p), some controls are locked out. It's a good model. Last of the slightly curved, charcoal coloured Trintrons, so has a decent, modern service menu.

Sorry, I’m confused. Am I able to reposition and tape down the plastic strips that are already in my current CRT or do I have to replace the strip entirely with ones from another CRT?

Hi, thanks for this information - I get an old TV CRT and have a similar issue but here a RGB line in the top, the problem? that old tapes in the top start to go off and the cinescope start to go down - I tape it again and perfect image.

Do think the magnets might hold the key to some 12 and 6 o'clock position bowing? My consumer crt looks good with colours, Just has a hint of a bow-tie look it. I am really confuse..... How to touch the tube while it turning on? I thought we need to turn off to discharge the tube before touching it. Can anyone advise? Thanks in advance

Corner of my screen has discoloration due to the internal speaker. How do i shield it? It is a Mitsubishi, under the big casing i see what resemble bookshelf speakers hanging on the internal mounts. Tin foil?

I need to look into this on my Sony HDCRT. I cant seem to get the screen straight. Although all i have been using are like the ESPN ticker, different sports network scoreboards and stuff lol. Is there anything i can use for a grid on a 16:9 set? The 240p one probably wont help much.

How hard do you chase corner convergence? I've added strips to the back of one of my pvms and I'd say it's pretty good, but right in the corner I can see the blue bleeding slightly off the edge of the white. Is it worth chasing or is it impossible to achieve true perfection?

It's so hard to get perfection on the corners and with some CRT's it's just not possible. You can try to get your degauss cable/band tight around the corner and that can help with color changes.

Retro Tech thanks very much. I used some magnetic tape to get it is as good as it was going to get. I could either get it horizontally converged or vertically but not both. So I went for vertically, otherwise you can see colour bleed between scan lines.

The exterior of the glass envelope _should_ be grounded, so it _should_ be safe to touch. But make sure the braided grounding strap stretched around the CRT is actually attached to the metal frame that surrounds the CRT face.

Please help me, I haven't been able to do anything for a month. I connect the Sony Trinitron KV-21T1R Sega Genesis RGB TV to my image is shifted to the left, I can enter the service menu, but no matter how I try, I can't use any buttons to center the image. Why can't I change the values? Help please

I need to do this with my KV-27FS210 I found working Do need to get new ports on the tv I think they are going bad also the RF connector is missing but I can still use the same video and some of the composite ports. But definally needs to be serviced and cleaned out. When i found it, it was at a apartment complex and nobody really knows why it was just sitting in the area only one person knew the police put it in the spot and nothing else I also had to lift it on a office chair and push it to my vehicle all by myself the thing is so heavy it took me like 20 minutes just to move it. I didn't know if it worked or not until I brung it home and used a extension cord to see if it powered on.

I have 2 27" crt and the picture on both of them bows inward about 2/3rd up on both sides why is this such a common problem? The tape they used in manufacturing just dries out? And then you have to risk electrocution to fix it, wow. Cool video just not sure if I want to test my luck and try it... is it worth the risk? hmm

Been watching a load of your videos. Informative, well put together stuff. I don't know if you could help me however? I have a consumer CRT 21" Sony Trinitron from roughly the mid 90's. Desperately needs it's geometry adjusted. However, no matter how many different button combinations I try I simply can't access the service menu. Any help?

Hi, Thanks for watching and commenting. Unfortunately there isn't a service menu on the consumer sets from the 90's. Those have to be adjusted internally, if that's possible. What's the model of your TV?

HI, I don't think there is a service menu for that TV. You will have to open the TV and see what's inside. Most likely it will need have the capacitors replaced to get the best picture. I just made a video about this today. Please check it out.

with the tv off. On remote press in order Display-5-Vol^- power. that should open the service menu

This is 240p test suite. You can get it for different consoles to display this screen. It is not a service menu option.

Yes it can help. You may want to see if there are any trim potentiometers that control your picture size inside your TV/CRT or in the service menu if you have a nicer monitor.

Retro Tech I have 2 flat screen CRTs probably made in early 2000s, one is a Panasonic, the other is a Sanyo. Would it be possible and safe to do the same procedure you did? I can't imagine tweaking the insides of a live CRT to be safe.

Yes. I have the 21" version of your TV. The corner pin setting should sort you out.

Using a test pattern generator or the 240p test suite. Easiest system to use it on is the Dreamcast, you can simply burn off a disc and load it right up.

The person who sold these before no longer does so. I don't know of a retailer who sells these anymore. The easiest is to take them from another CRT.

i bought a Samsung tantus CRT "hdtv" and i was expecting to have great retro experience init.. wrong.. that thing looks horrible. Edges seems to have some kind og chromatic aberration, image is not clean, like a some noise in it.. disgusting.. I refuse to believe it is how it supouse to look, i guess i will have to take it to service.

Hi! I recently purchased a crt tv sharp 76FW-54H TV for retro gaming, but unfortunately the screen is very disrupted and bowed on the side (inwards). Apparently, this TV never been serviced, so I believe there is a problem with focus and the geometry. I tried to fix the geometry myself using the service menu, but changing values for: e-w width, pin phase, pin amp, upper and lower corner correction doesn't seems to do anything. They're usually taped down with back to back tape. The magnets aren't going to stick to glass. Make sure the glass part where the magnets will rest, is cleaned so the tape won't come loose from dust. :)

This is the wrong test grid to use. You should be using one with white corners so that when you fix the geometry, you are not also throwing the corner convergence off. Of course, with your test grid, you won't know this until you actually play a game with it.

The top left corner of my crt is showing a separation of color. Like a shadow effect. Is that the same issue? How can I fix that?

@@id-iz2ds I figured out how to fix the convergence on the monitor. You need to rotate the convergence rings. Initially I thought I had to replace the convergence tape but that really did not do much. It's the rings that need to be reset.
